Survival/ Map reading books

Re the navigational part: Learning an outdoor activity is best done outdoors so most any book that covers elementary map based navigation will suffice. (I personally like the New Zealand Mountain Council Safety Manual 25) Give it quick read then get out in the woods with a good map and practice navigation using the map. The compass and GPS are great tools, but knowing how to read the map is the key to efficient navigation. If you want some instruction on honing your skills find a local Orienteering club go to a few of their events. You can get some one on one instruction and do some courses to improve your skills.
