k7pyd
Metal detecter. Can I use one to help me find the cache. Link to comment
leatherman
Of course. I don't know how effective it would be. You have to be within 6 to 8 inches to pick up the small pieces of metal in a typical cache. Except, of course, an ammo can. If you do not extend your expectations unto others, you will not be disappointed by the stupid things they do. Mokita! Link to comment
worldtraveler
I don't think there is a "geocaching rule" prohibiting it; however: It may be illegal to use them in some places where caches are hidden (around historical areas, some parks, etc.) The detector would be of little or no use in finding a tupperware container full of plastic McToys and used golf balls It's really not necessary Worldtraveler Link to comment
Jamie Z
I agree with those two that a metal detector isn't going to be a whole lot of help. Many caches are made of plastic and probably don't have any metal objects in them anyway, but how would you know. But... my main concern is that by carrying a metal detector, you may give the impression that geocaching involves digging, a misconception that is already prevelant. We don't need to spread that around even more. Jamie Link to comment
DougsBrat
Might be useful in SNOW areas, but we dont get that white stuff here More rules = Less fun! NTGA member Link to comment
