+Mn-treker
I live in Minnesota, the ticks are very bad this year. We have found that Deet does not work very well. Try permithrin, do not apply to skin. It is to be put on shoes socks and other clothing. Permithrin kills those bugs, You may still find a few on you but a whole lot less. It may also be sprayed on dogs hair to help them. Good luck. Quote Link to comment

While all of the different sprays/ointments are a great help, get yourself a lint roller and carry it in your car. Roll yourself down when you return from your hike, and roll down your car seats when you return home, in case you missed something and it dropped into your car. Quote Link to comment
+jellis
To me this is the best. You don't put it on your skin. Just spray it on your clothes and it lasts about 7 washings. It repels and kills ticks. Sawyer® Permethrin Premium Insect Repellent Aerosol Spray for Clothing Edited April 3, 2012 by jellis Quote Link to comment
+jellis
Expected major Tickage on my Saturday hike. Oddly only found 1 tick on my trousers, despite some considerable off-trail hides. Flicked that little bugger and moved on. Maybe it'll be a bad tick year in another couple weeks? Since it was so far a short caching season for me, I've only found one tick on my clothes. But I could tell the spray I used was already killing him. Quote Link to comment
+SoonerCardsFan
I've spent a lot of time camping, hiking etc. in my 52 years. Long before caching. This has been the worst year so far for ticks that I've seen. A week ago I had one attach itself before I found it. I removed it properly but an area around it about the diameter of a baseball turned a bright red rash. Freaked me out as I've pulled many, many ticks off myself over the years and never had this happen. Went to a urgent care clinic and the Dr. said it was nothing to worry about. Gave me a weeks worth of antibiotics in case. It's cleared up now so all is good. I have bought the strongest DEET spray and will use it from now on. Quote Link to comment
+Mn-treker
Wow that lint roller idea sounds great! But I would still use spray and also spray inside the car. You never know where those little buggers can hide. Two days after caching in the Rum River State Forest my friend guardrail10 found ticks crawling in his truck. He did not use spray till half way through his day of geocaching. I only found one on me and none in my truck.Premithrin kills ticks, deet repels and does not work well to repel ticks. That's the first sign of Lyme disease. If it looks like a bulls-eye and is about as big as a baseball, that's it. Quote Link to comment

I've been bitten by spiders. Stung by scorpions. I even had some weird thing lay eggs in the bottom of my feet that then became maggot that we had to dig out with a knife. (All but one that the doc want me leave to show his friend back at the post hospital ) Yet for some reason ticks still give me the creeps. I think it has something to do with Lyme disease. +eagsc7
Lots and lots of bug spray that specifically calls out ticks as something it repels Long pants Light-colored clothing (makes them easier to see) Frequent tick checks. Don't wait till you get home, check before you get in the car, when you stop in a clear area for a snack/drink, etc. Ticks tend to migrate toward your warmer areas - upper thighs, armpits, etc. Stop them before they get there. Stay out of the weeds & away from leaves There are no "hazards of geocaching" that are unique to geocaching - they come with any outdoor activity. All Good points, and the two that I can add are: Tuck your pants into your socks Carry a Lint Roller in your car. After finding that cache that was thru the weeds, you may find HUNDREDS of seed/dot/nano Ticks on you. Lint roller them off you. I have a picture with over 450 ticks on a single sheet of lint roller paper... The Steaks Quote Link to comment

That's why I went to a Dr. but he says it doesn't look like it to him. I hope he knows what he's doing. Quote Link to comment
