How many GPS's

Can you beat my record of 4 GPS's in three years? I started with an eTrex H, which I got fed up with after a week, due to it not having any maps. Since then I’ve had an Oregon 400, which I slammed the car door on (twice). Yesterday my Oregon 550t screen got smashed, how I don’t know. Today I received my second Oregon 550.

Just for the record, Garmin want £200 to repair a broken glass screen, which you can purchase for £15!!!!! And replace in about 10 minutes.

And you didn't do that because .... :)

I had arranged to go caching on Sunday with poshrule, and I can’t do without a GPS for many days (what else can you do in this life), plus I have maintenance to do. I have got a new screen on order, but as it’s from America, I’m expecting at least a three week wait. Perhaps I will then have a spare.

Not sure if you mean how many do I own or how many I've broken  . I own 16 (including phone/PDAs with GPSrs in them), but I've never broken any  .

Still on the eTrex yellow (pre-H model) which was second-hand when I bought it off Dan (of Dan&Pid) in 2003. The screen's got a couple of dead lines from being dropped but these babies were built to last! So: 9 years, 1 GPS :)

You've got me beat. My tally:

Garmin Geko 201

Garmin GPSMap 60CS (now sold)

Garmin GPSMap 60CSx

Garmin GPS10

2 phones with built-in GPS (probably soon to be 3)

Bluetooth GPS dongle

Garmin Montana 650

which only makes 8, or 7 if you exclude the unit I sold. The worst I did to any of my units was when I scratched the screen of the CSx (and it wasn't a major scratch) against a rock part way up Snowdon.

I currently use 4 devices, for various different types of caching.

In-car sat nav (fine for the occasional drive by)

Garmin Oregon with OS maps (great all rounder)

Sony Ericsson X10 mini phone (great for live "unprepared" cache trips and live logging)

HP iPaq with GPS (good on a numbers day for panning the memory-map maps quickly)

My old Garmin is now used by some relations who took up geocaching after I introduced them to the fun many years ago.

I think you should be more careful with your devices

I actually carry 4 whenever I'm caching:

Oregon 550t

Dakota 20

Either of the above will be in the rucksack

Satmap Active 10 x 2 - one in pocket, one in rucksack.

The Satmaps are for navigating, the Garmins are for cache-hunting.

Although it's 5 if you count my phone, and then 6 if you count my camera..

My sense of direction is so awful I dare not risk being out in the wilds without help!

As you say, the screens are about £13 on Ebay, but the ones I saw came from Hong Kong. Took 10 days to arrive, and somewhat more than 10 minutes to change (although next time it'll be quicker!) - and at that price, why not have one in stock? The digitizer (the bit you replace) is univeral across the Oregon range - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250955831515

What's the most common reason for breaking a gps? Mine wasn't broken as such, just had a really annoying couple of scratches from where I crawled over a granite boulder with it clipped to my hip.

For christmas hubby bought me a Garmin E Trex 30 which i really like after using a trusty second hand Etrex i had used for over a year to see if i liked geocaching. We went to Australia in Nov/Dec so i was allowed to take my new gps with me. :D

2 days before we left i accidently broke the small screw type handle on the back :o Hubby phoned Garmin to see if we could buy a replacement backing. As it was late afternoon the helpful young man said he would have missed that afternoon's post but would send a new backing for the gps the following morning free of charge, which he did and as luck would have it the post arrived 10 minutes beore we left for the airport so i was able to take my new gps with us. I did phone once we were back in UK to thank Garmin for super service.

Ordered my screen from the US, and arrived from Hong Kong, about three weeks later. Took about 15 mins to replace, although I have repared a Garmin before (not glass) so knew what to expect. I now have a spare 550, if I should break it again.
