Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Museum in the News

Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Museum is a totally unique geocaching experience. His art is one of a kind and there will be nothing else like it when he's gone. Barney is 91 now.

 

There was a news story broadcast this morning, on my local NBC channel, featuring Rich of Rich & Lola fame, but I haven't been able to locate the link. Did anyone else see it?

 

Here is another neat video showcasing some of his most important works. (Barney looks pretty beat up there from taking a fall, but the one they showed this morning, he looks much better.)

 

 

If anyone can come up with the recent story please post it.

Meeting Barney you'd think he's known you your whole life. What an amazing personality!

 

We were there for over an hour and would have spent longer if we didn't need to get the Snooglet out of the heat.

 

I signed Toilet seat #4 & gave him some of my smashed coins to incorporate into the design.

 

I would recommend a stop to see Barney for anyone that just needs something to smile about.

BTW Barney doesn't advertise it to geocachers, be he has a letterbox toilet seat as well for those of you that are letterboxers too.

It was ALL geocachers in that video. The cut down version on my local station only featured Rich.

 

The lady wearing the jacket and HQ lanyard is Lola and the other lady wearing the sweater and HQ lanyard is Kirbydox.

 

The lady in the trench coat is the reporter.

It is definitely one of my favorite geocaching experiences, in meeting Barney. He is a character. I remember also seeing him in the FTF Geocacher magazine a few years back.

Barney's museum is still one of my favorite geocaching experiences and was pretty much the highlight of my caching trip to San Antonio a few years ago. Good times.

Looks like the story has gotten picked up for national human interest story. Folks are posting on the cache page that they saw the story in other states.

 

Barney has gotten a lot of good press over the years. He has all the stories and videos in his museum. I just hope that an art historian or an art museum saves his work after he passes which hopefully is a long time off.

Neato! Seat 4 is finished and you can make out my sig and all of the smashed coins I gave him. Oh and my original red tiger's eye sig item too. I never saw that pic before.

That was a cool virtual. I can see my geocoin still hanging on seat #3! Barney's also been on Montel Williams and The View.

I wish I'd taken pictures when I was there. I can't remember which seat I signed, and none of the photos have enough resolution for me to make it out. Ah, well.

Powermower and I went back to Barney's not too long ago and put up some more ceiling supports so he could hang some more of his "seat" art. What a great guy, always friendly, no matter what.

We just went and visited Barney and the museum this past weekend. He is moving a bit slowly and his hearing is slipping, but he is getting around fine, still sharp as a tack, and still taking care of Mrs. Smith. We visited with him for over an hour, signed several seats, arranged to work with him to do a USMC seat, and plan to go back and visit with him again.

 

If you do no other cache in the San Antonio area, you MUST do this one. He's a real treasure and a pure joy to visit with!

That man is a hoot. We stopped back by over Labor Day when we were visiting friends in town. It was neat finding what I'd signed a couple years ago. We added one of our hzoi coins to seat #6. (And accidentally left our stamp, but we sent him a prepaid envelope when we mailed him photos and the coin, and he was nice enough to mail it back.)
