My oregon 550t has started not loading the GPX files anymore. I create a PQ then drag & drop them onto my device like it’s a flash drive. I’ve always done it this way & it’s never failed before. I usually only copy over the gpx files- not the waypoints. I don’t use them I use a PC with vista installed. I have downloaded them straight to the device with the “send to” option. They are not on the waypoint manager- I put them in the GPX folder. I'm getting no help from Garmin on this. They want me to change my preferenced to use 1.0.6 but that is not an option on GC.com. Please help with this if you can.

i get this...

Dear Frankie Wagschal,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to assist you with this.

The software update for the Oregon enhanced the way the GPX files are read by the device. Please check with geocaching.com as to why you are unable to change the GPX version to version 1.0.6.

Garmin has been providing this inaccurate information for quite a while now. There is no such thing as version 1.0.6; what they should be saying is 1.0. Their receivers are unable to handle the additional tags for attributes contained in the XML for v1.0.1 and so fail to recognize the contents as geocaches.

I'm now merging this thread with an existing one on the topic.

I just found the source of this errant information.

  1. Log into Geocaching.com
  2. Click on Your Profile
  3. Click on Your Account Details
  4. Click on Change next to Your Preferences
  5. Change the GPX version to 1.0 6.
  6. Click on Save Changes

It looks like a copy/paste error. Note how there is no decimal point between the 0 and the 6. And the following step is step 6. And all the other lines do not end in period, yet line 5 does.

On the page linked above, you can click NO next to "Was this helpful?" and give feedback. I suggest everyone tell them to fix this and stop handing out this erroneous information.

This email just came from product "support":

Dear Frankie Wagschal,

I apologize for the misinformation. The GPX Versions used to be different at Geocaching.com. The question came up so much that many people made templates with the versions. They have since changed and not everyone has updated their templates. The 1.0 GPX version should work fine on your Garmin mass storage device.

The only time I have not seen it work correctly is if you are using a Mac. The newest communicator plugin is not sending the Geocache like it should. You still see the message about being successfully written but nothing happens. This is a known issue that our software engineers are working on getting corrected. As a work around, you can download the GPX file and then load it to the unit via Basecamp. The downside is that to download a GPX file you must have a premium account. Without having a premium account, you can only get LOC files, which do not work.

This of course is not convenient and is only meant to be a temporary work around until a new communicator plugin is released. (This is only happening on Macs.)

Please let me know if there is anything further I can assist you with.

With Best Regards,

Great catch, Lil Devil! I've added my feedback to try and get the bogus information corrected.

Isn't it amazing how a tiny piece of misinformation can be spread so widely and cause so much mischief these days?
