kayakbird Posted February 5, 2012 Share Posted February 5, 2012 Touched on this type of setting in a couple of recent threads after seeing my first one at BROWN CG1130. They seemed unique enough to become my major targets on a road trip from western AZ to SW NM and back last month. Running GSAK filters for 'BRONZE ROD(S)'and 'DISK WELDED' produced a list of 16 possibles; two of which (COVERED & SANTA) I had driven right past on my way east and VEKOL (GEO LOGGED in 2007) was just a bit further north. I did get to these three returning to Yuma. VEKOL RM 1 PASTURE & JOKAKE have been GEOLOGGED NOT FOUND. A broken off stem may be the only thing left of VALLEY(my last planned target this trip) when I get there in a week or ten days. I think that the following have a good chance of being out there - HEATH, MCEUEN, PINON, QUAJOTE, SCRUB,STANLEY. Better take a metal detector if you go after SCRUB. As to my question above: I have not been able to GSAK filter any possibilities in NM, Colo, Utah, NV or eastern Imperial Co CA. (I do not have a GSAK file for California). Out of 4453 marks we came up with 2 possibles for you. SEVAINE and CHEM The first search we did for "Bronze rod" pulled up nothing. Then we did the 2nd for "DIsk Welded" and received the above 2. After reading the descriptions, EV3666'REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, A STANDARD DISK WELDED ON TOP OF A 3 INCH CAST IRON SOIL PIPE --- EU0924'THE STATION MARK, A STANDARD DISK WELDED ON TOP OF A 3 INCH CAST IRON SOIL PIPE---, I don't think that I will hike to the 'SAN SEVAINE LOOKOUT TOWER' but I will put CHEM on my 'accessed by kayak' target list. It is right across the river from the take-out of the Topock Gorge reach of the Colorado River where I had already planned to do a day paddle. The first discard clue on the above would be the setting dates - every thing in AZ seem to be from 1936. Other possible search words/phrases are found in the description for SCRUB ER0456'THE STATION IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SCRUB 1936 BRAZED TO THE ER0456'END OF A TAPERING CAST BRONZE ROD PROJECTING FROM AN 18-INCH--- This POOR SANTA RM 1 shows a bit of the 'WELDED DISK' detail. I am about to start drifting more or less due north, but another one these rare ones in a different state would be worth a couple hundred mile side trip. MEL Quote Link to comment

I have checked a few of the descriptions for other than 1936, but everything comes up with two or three inch iron or cast iron pipe. Do have this one to check part way home: OW0291'STATION MARK IS STANDARD DISK ATTACHED TO 3-FOOT BRONZE ROD, BOTTOM EMBEDDED IN CONCRETE, AND TOP PROJECTING 9 INCHES ABOVE GROUND. and that would put me in position to get rid of those ugly white counties in Wyo. I need to see if I can figure out the GSAK down load procedure again and get at least the southern counties in Calif before next winter south-bound migration. 2OF's did do SAN BERNARDINO which covers a lot of ground. Z15 Posted February 24, 2012 Share Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) We used these copper clad rods at the Michigan state DOT for the 30 yrs I worked there (72-02). We mostly used them for property corners, sections corners etc that were replaced on road construction. The state had a never ending supply of them, they were originally planned to mark Right of Way but they (FHWA) stopped requiring the ROW be marked in the 70's. The rods came with a cap like in the pic and w/o. The ones w/o a cap we used in our cast iron boxes in the roadways to monuments c/l alignment. As I recall the ones we used came in 18-ich and 24-inch length. The pic with the cap a beat up is what happened when beat into the ground with a mall. Z15, The flared top station set in Arizona in 1936 were not 'copper clad rods', but were about one inch in diameter solid bronze/brass rods, as seen at the snapped off rod of COVERED RM 1, that flared out to the diameter of the disk which was somehow welded on the top. There is also a bulbous enlargement near its lower end. I believe that they were meant to be set in concrete in a dug hole and not driven in.
