Here are a few similar Geocaching terms that can be easily confused: Geotrail - (n) (1) Damage to natural habitat caused by excessive Geocaching traffic. (2) Trail or path created by Geocachers en route to find a Geocache, used in conjunction with Geosenses to identify best route to a Geocache and minimize future damage to habitat. A preliminary Geotrail is usually established shortly after the F2F. Power Trail - (n) A large collection of Geocaches placed with the intention of finding all caches in one pass along the route. Usually 100 or more caches placed at the minimum distance (0.1 miles) apart, but smaller lines of caches can be consider a power trail it the cache to cache route is obvious. Usually placed with the intention of boosting cache find statistics. Series - (n) Small collection of Geocaches that form a set or theme. Completing a series may, in some situations, qualify the Geocacher to locate a puzzle or pick up a Geocoin. How would you classify a group of caches such as the Great Lakes Seaway Geotrail (http://www.seawaytrail.com/geotrail/)? It's not really a series as the 75 caches along the trail don't really have anything in common other than they're part of the trail. There are many different cache owners, container types, and hiding styles involved. Since there are only 75 caches along a route over 400 miles long it could hardly be considered a powertrail. There are actually two definitions of a geotrail and this one fits the looser definition of a group of caches along a designated route. Link to comment

I reserve the term "power trail" for this kind of trail. I use the term "numbers run trail" for the "100 or more caches 528ft/161m apart" like the ET Highway numbers run trail or the Route 66 numbers run trail. Link to comment

This historic tour will take you along a small portion of the OregonTrail and introduce you to the city of Maupin. A cute little high desert town in central Oregon. It was launched about a week and there are geocoins available for the first 190 cachers to fill out their passports with 20 stamps. +attymom Posted January 1, 2013 Share Posted January 1, 2013 Recently completed the Oyate Trail geotrail in South Dakota. Really enjoyed the variety of hides, types and difficulty of the caches. One thing worth mentioning is that the "coin" given to the first 50 to find is really a pathtag. I preferred it as a pathtag, but I know some might be disappointed if expectations are not adjusted. BTW, there is still room to be among the first 50 on this "southern route to the Black Hills/Mount Rushmore". Link to comment
+attymom Posted January 1, 2013 Share Posted January 1, 2013 From what I can tell, the North Dakota geotrail ended in September 2012. At least that's what the literature says. Not sure if this fits your definition, but the Off the Beaten Trail series in eastern Colorado is designed as a geotrail. However, rather than providing a reward if you get a certain number of caches on the trail, each cache is filled with custom swag that is unique to the cache but follows a similar pattern to all the others on the trail, i.e. a carabiner with a sort of pathtag attached.
