Bockereyders Geocoin

One of the famous legends in our region is the legend of the Bokkenrijders (goatriders) or as it was written back in the 18th century: Bockeryeders.

It was a fearsome gang that operated in the border region on both sides of the river Maas (Meuse), both in the Netherlands (Kerkrade), Germany (Aachen)

and Belgium (Wellen).

It was believed they rode on goats through the sky.....

"There are eight of us,

We go out stealing every night.

Because we are too lazy to work,

We rob churches.

Across woods and shrubs

All the way through the clouds!"

"We zijn met achten,

we stelen alle nachten.

Omdat we te lui zijn om te werken,

bestelen we de kerken

Over bos en struik

Door de wolken uit!"

After consulting the designer of one of the Dutch Geocoin 2011 content proposals, I made a new design on this topic.

What do you think of it?

ps: there is still a small error in the text on the side ('Bokkenryders' should be 'Bockereyders')

The samples have been ordered, including a two-tone edition :D .

The text 'ghost riders in the sky' has been explicitly chosen.

It is referring to the goatriders which where seen as ghosts, moving through the sky on their goats....

Anyway, I decided to adapt to as it might be confusing.

Below some more pictures of the samples. I don't know what I was thinking when ordering the samples <_< .

Not really the colors which I wanted to see

Anyway, the actual production will be started with some other combinations:

- Antique bronzewith green (bottom left)

- Antique silver with olive

- Satin gold with red

- Two-tone (shiny gold/nickel) with purple (top right, but outside right will be darker purple)

Maybe other combinations will follow later.

I'm loving that two-tone one! I am such a purple person. Great job!

Is there more to the story to makes this fearsome gang worth paying homage to, worth honouring? I just don't get this cultural fascination with evil.

Well, actually there are two sides of the story.

Indeed, you could see it as a legend of an evil gang.

And there was a gang.

But in reality it has a dark side as many people where captured and tortured to get a confession. A lot of people were killed in this witchhunt.

After some historic research, nowadays, historians don't believe the gang was actually so fearsome and there are locations where this failure of justice is remembered with statues and so.
