Event for Gloucester area on 29th Feb, 2012?

I've been watching the events crop up on the map and these has been a big gap all around Gloucester and none (last I looked) very close on Wednesday 29th February. (Only one chance every 4 years to fill in that date on the calendar, you might regret it if you miss your chance!) So...I just wanted to know if anyone has an event they are planning within about 15 miles of Gloucester on that date (at a venue where there's room for all, if you catch my drift). Please post here, or PM me if there is going to be an event - and rough location...

Next question is, if noone is planning to host an event for that date in the Gloucester/Cheltenham/Forest of Dean/ Dursley/Tewkesbury area, please say if you would be interested in an evening event at a pub (meals optional) and if there's a particular venue or area which would be best for you, as it's midweek. I haven't hosted an event before, so if someone more experienced and better known in our caching community would like to step in and take over here, feel completely free to do so without feeling you're stepping on anyone's toes! :D I'll help where I can as I'm not currently working, and can provide cache box, notebook etc. Was thinking that as it's in the evening there's no need to go publishing a whole series of caches, but to commemorate the date, and to have one more to tick off for making the effort, maybe a new church micro within walking distance of the pub (or even a nearby night cache) would be fun (but I have no idea where to put the night cache, would need to work that out some more - got an inkling for a pub & church though.)

Knowing me, this thread will sink to the bottom of the page soon and I'll forget about it, so if you are interested in attending something like this, say something, if not...well, you can still say what you like! :P

Yep, that one does look good. I'd been thinking of this idea for a few days and that one has only been published today I think. It's on another auspicious date - St Patrick's Day! It's over a couple of weeks later, so not clashing exactly. There might be other events in the pipeline for 29th already, hence my first question, really.

It's good of you to think of setting something up but, truth be told, we would be unlikely to venture out on a February mid-week evening for an event unless it's very close to home (i.e. within 5 miles).

I'll probably sneak out during the day and log some fairly uninspiring micro half a mile away to claim The Souvenir... if I remember :)

That's what I was thinking I could do too, but as the nearest 29th events are Swansea, Bristol & Birmingham which is too far for me to go, just wondered if anyone within about 10-15 miles would be interested...So I thought it might be worth asking. It could be that I'm not in a 'big' enough place for it to be worth it for people after work, as like you say, people want to get home mid-week and about 5 miles out of the way is enough, unless you can pop along on foot after work before setting off for home, I suppose.

We would be willing to travel to Cheltenham or Tewkesbury and i guess other Evesham area based cachers would as well.

Just a short walk up a gentle hill.

I've always found when "hosting" events that someone will turn up.

We are on holiday in a couple of weeks and are hosting an event whilst away. 5 people have logged to say they are coming - we may even be bringing Mrs B's TB back with us (if we can figure out how to fit it in the suitcase).

Bite the bullet and set it up (I would come - but the London one is nearer, although oddly I'll be at the event you mention as we happen to be that way visiting friends that weekend).

Having a rethink on venue as ones I had in mind are probably not accessible enough. I'm now thinking somewhere between Gloucester and Cheltenham would be good. I'll go and check a couple of places out some time soon.

No, get something near to a bus route; then people can drink and (not) drive; so you'd be looking at town centre pubs for the most part. The Bayshill, in Cheltenham, is good for example.

Went for a drink at the Bayshill this afternoon. Good choice. :) Will bite the bullet in a bit.

Go for it!! Set it up. You only need two people to turn up and you can have a fun evening. The reality is you may well get many more and who knows where that can lead to. 29th February... how many need that date to fill their calendar? It's four years till the next opportunity. Go for it, good luck and enjoy whatever happens.

Would be interested in attending but would have to drive. As a newbie not sure how an event cache works. I was planning to nip out to do a cache in my lunch hour to get the souvenir! It is a great idea to have an event. Thanks.

Unless there is something special about the event such as a CITO, all you have to do is turn up, sign the log, have a chat and maybe a drink (as this one will be in a pub) and then go home. Log the event as 'attended' at some point and a 'find' is added to your stats. As the TV advert says - simples!

And, for logging a Found or Attended on the 29th you will get a Souvenir which are virtual pieces of art that can be discovered and displayed on your profile.

Yay, great, the more the merrier! Will be great to meet all who come along.

( haven't been to many events, so I wanted to see what someone else would say to that! )

All are welcome, though I expect it will be a small/ staggered event. I'll be driving too, and will add parking info. :)

An Event cache is simply social get-together for geocachers. It can be anything from a couple of hours at a pub, a picnic in the local park, a BBQ in a geocacher's garden/field, a meet on top of some high point, an all-day event using a large hall or similar building, or the really large events like the 2012 UK Mega event and Piratemania V.

Some cachers bring along trackables (geocoins and travel bugs) to pass on to others, or display their collections of geocoins for others to discover. Sometimes the event organisers place new geocaches that get published on the day of the event to give some extra fun for FTF opportunities. But, primarily, an event should be for socialising, just getting to know other cachers... in my opinion. :)

Thank you! It's published ( GC3BCF0 thanks to our newest reviewer!) So looking forward to meeting anyone who comes along, and if you can't make it, there's another (proper) event (just around the corner and up a bit) on St Patrick's day a couple of weeks later.

Nice one, I hope all goes well for your first event

(and I hope the person who has already logged "attended", doesn't get too bored waiting for the rest of you to arrive  )

 he's very keen! Will his 'find' count as today or as 29th Feb, I wonder? Maybe I should rummage around in my caching box in the garage and check that he has not, in fact, already signed the log! I did make the mistake of trying to publish it without adjusting to the desired date to start with, so when I got the 'published' note with today's date and then his 'attended' assumed it was my silly fault again.

...or the really large events like the 2012 UK Mega event and Piratemania V.
Or indeed the Geolympix in Oxford on July 22nd. (561 pre-registrations. We're planning for 1000+ people). For the sake of balance ;)

Good luck with Once Every Four Years Fianccetto- I remember the first event I organised. That was more than 50 ago; beware, successful ones can get pretty addictive! (I'm good at forgetting the one where no one - literally no one - turned up, lol! Yours is alread a big hit in comparison :))

Of course, this leap year business is not as straightforward as it may sound. A leap year does not necessarily come every four years. There are occasions when cachers and everybody else would have to wait for 8 years to cache or whatever on 29th February. I will explain but take notes, there will be a test at the end.

A leap year is a leap year when the year is divisible by 4 with no remainder unless the year is divisible by 100, then to be a leap year it has to be divisible by 400. So, for example 1996 was a leap year, 2000 was a leap year and 2004 was a leap year. Now 1896 was a leap year but 1900 was not. So 2100 will not be leap year thus new cachers on 1st March 2096 will have to wait eight years.

Best thing to do is to go to the event in Cheltenham so as not to have to worry about missing leap years although all of us will be 'quite old' when the next one is missed from the calendar :) :)

Ok, I'll get my coat (anaorak) and go!!!!! :)

That is pretty much what Mr F said when I chose the name for the event! I can see you two will get on well!
