+GEO-BREIN
Hi there, I have a problem with my smartphone with the app Whereyougo and can use some help. When I've played a cartridge the app askes me to save the progress so I save. No problem there. When I go back to the game ... no problem to continue the game. But when I look for my .GWS file to upload on the Wherigo.com, I can't find him. I only have a .OWS file. Strange isn't it??? Is there somebody else who has the same problem and can help me out here??? Other then that, the app is working perfectly and I can play all cartridges without a problem. But without a .GWS file I can't get a code to unlock the cartridge. Quote Link to comment
+Delta68
There's really not much point in 'unlocking' a cartridge. I didn't event add the code to mark as completed in our last few cartridges - I forgot all about it! Sorry, that doesn't answer your question Mark Quote Link to comment
Ranger Fox
To my knowledge, the Wherigo save file (GWS) has been the most difficult thing for the third-party Player creators to reverse engineer. I don't know if any of them have figured it out. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.) Later on, the smartphone-based Players will be given the ability to unlock cartridges as well as download them directly from the site. Only after that, I believe the unlock stats will start to mean anything. Quote Link to comment
+GEO-BREIN
So the .OWS file I get is normal then!? Oh well ... it's the playing that's important. It's not like I will start playing a lot of cartridges in the near future. Only the ones that you can play everywhere is what I'm interested in, because there aren't a lot of Wherigo's nearby. I managed to log 2 of them already without being asked for the saved fie, so ... I guess it's okay. Thanks for the answers!! Quote Link to comment
Ranger Fox
The OWS file should be WhereYouGo's save file (if I'm interpreting the situation correctly), so that is normal. (If you're looking for Play Anywhere cartridges try my Battleship cartridge. Doubtless, you're already probably aware of Whack-A-Lackey.) Quote Link to comment
+DaHias
... But when I look for my .GWS file to upload on the Wherigo.com, I can't find him. I only have a .OWS file. Strange isn't it??? Is there somebody else who has the same problem and can help me out here??? ... Yes, I have the same problem like you have RHCV, I'm also blind like you and thus not able to help to solve this situation. But I can help to enlarge the picture of our problem by more information, for one of the specialists is able to focus better onto the real bug. I'm using also WhereYouGo on Android 3.1 without any problems, but ... I played/finalized an "anywhere" game without an un-lock code at the end. I saved it and as I haven't had this code, I tried to upload the already mentioned .OWS (WhereYouGo) final save file. As I expected, the Wherigo page didn't accept it. Knowing that the catridge is compatible, I assumed that the final save file is compatible as well. So I renamed the file extension from .OWS to .GWS but it has been still not acceptable for the upload. How can I set these games into status "complete", in order to get them from my open list? I can also live with a workaround solution by editing a flag in the .OWS code and the renaming to .GWS. Any idea? Many thanks in advance, especially to RHCV for opened this treat. +all hat
I have had the same problem... no .GWS file just a .OWS and a .GWL file. I just downloaded the app today so it is the most current and it worked fine on the 2 cartridges I tried except for this GWS/OWS problem. One other thing I noticed is that after I save a completed game I can no longer retrieve the unlock code. I got the code when I completed the game, but I thought I would upload the saved game instead of typing in the unlock code. When the upload didn't work, I went back looking for the unlock code and I can't find it anywhere. I even played the game a 2nd and 3rd time but still no unlock code. It would be nice if the unlock code remained available after saving the game. Quote Link to comment
+DaHias
Forget the. gwl file as it is just the log file which records all your decisions and pressed buttons. Good luck, DaHias Edited June 18, 2012 by DaHias Quote Link to comment
Ranger Fox
I would rather this information not become public knowledge, DaHias. Quite a few of us know about this, but for the past four and a half years, it was an unspoken agreement this was best left out of the forum. I'd like you to consider for yourself if it's a wise move for this information to be discussed publicly, outside of PMs. As a moderator, I feel your post is just fine as it doesn't go against any sort of usage guidelines. As an active member in this community, though, I'd rather this knowledge not be too public, though I'd completely agree this is easy for people to figure out on their own if they are so inclined and motivated. I know people are having trouble with unlock codes at the moment--especially on cartridges where the author did not include a message box or item to show one. Perhaps, later, when unlocking a cartridge actually means something, cartridge authors will be more likely to code this in. I've used this information to test the Wherigo site's unlock code feature and the current bug where unlock codes greater than 15 characters have been generated by the site. (By the way, this is still an outstanding bug with Groundspeak. The next time I'll hear of an update on their progress is next Tuesday.) There are other fun Wherigo hacks as well. The enjoyment, as you seemed to just experience, comes from figuring them out yourself. Quote Link to comment
+SporTrak1
ok, I just did my first Wherigo cache today. Had a great time. Have the same problem mentioned, no GWS file, only an OWS file. I know some have said "don't worry about uploading" but logging a find or a completion is part of the fun. My real problem is this, the adventure took me around to find numbers to be able to find the actual geocache location so I can log a find on my geocache profile. found all the numbers but can not find anything telling me where they fit into the coordinates to find the final cache location. I've looked on the geocaching web site for the cache and the Wherigo website for the cache to see if either advises what to do with the numbers I've found. Figured when I unlock it that will tell me but cannot unlock without the GWS file. Quote Link to comment
+StefandD
Most cartridges give an unlock code for the Wherigo website when you're finished playing. When you unlock a cartridge, it gets the status "unlocked". Nothing more. No additional info. Info like cache coordinates should be given while playing the Wherigo. Since Wherigo is developed to be used off-line there is really no point in letting people first unlock the cartridge before they can find the cache. Usually the info how to find the cache can be found in your inventory or in places. If not, contact the CO for help. Quote Link to comment

The enjoyment, as you seemed to just experience, comes from figuring them out yourself. The trouble with sticking your head in the sand and ignoring a problem, is that it will come around and bite you in the a**! I have had both problems because like SporTrak1 said: >"I know some have said "don't worry about uploading" but logging a find or a completion is part of the fun."< I agree! Problem 1: The unlock code I got (for me [on a smartphone and tablet running Kit-Kat] the unlock code was saved at the end of the game...no problem) was eighteen digits long, three too many! this known bug was NOT mentioned on the Wherigo site by Wherigo, the cartridge author, or by cartridge reviewers...not helpful but adhering to the head-in-the-sand principal? Problem 2: No gws file! No wonder, as the file doesn't seem to exist! I messaged Groundspeak on this problem and got nowhere! However that's probably because If you don't see a problem...then one doesn't exist? Examining the files in both WhereYouGo folders, I noticed a bak file. Since this usually stands for a back-up file and saved files would be backed up, then this could be the missing gws file? Not that Wherigo unlock would accept it though, but maybe it's worth changing the file extension from bak to gws and give that a try? Just a thought, the game definitely saved on completion...so where is it saving it too? Quote Link to comment
