Where to go geocaching in London...?

Hi!

I'm going to London a few days in January and have some time in the evening to, of course, go geocaching.

Well... London is big and I wonder where the best place is to go caching?

Hi Theodor,

London is a fairly big place, but it's easy to get around (don't forget it's quite often quicker to walk than it is to get the underground as things are

Without knowing roughly where your staying - you could look for caches around where you are staying (looking for favourite points is often a good indication).

If you happen to be in town on the 19th then Goldpots world famous monthly event is on (http://coord.info/GC39EM4) and you would be more than welcome.

If you let us know roughly what area of London you are staying in we can probably recommend a few "must do" caches.

Also, what do you mean by "best place"?

Do you want somewhere where you can get a lot of caches in one area? Or would you prefer to do individual caches which are particularly good/original? Do you want to see the tourist sights and get caches at those locations?

Hi LinseyG!

I'm in London the week before the monthly event :(

The reason for going to London is actual http://bettshow.com and the hotel is in that area.

Thanks for the tips, webscouter.

I will really try to take a look at Royal Observatory Greenwitch :)

Good question MrsB! Lets say both :)

- a lot of caches in one area

- caches which are particularly good/original

It's not my first time in London and I am more interested in caches this time ;)

OK...

We're not very knowledgable about London caches, we don't live near there, but I'll mention a few that we enjoyed when we visited last year:

There's a nice walk along the north bank of the Thames from GC1H861 "LQ:CITY - Bazalgette's Bank" towards Tower Bridge to GC13M78 "From a Swan to the Canary: Tower - Save me!" One of these caches, GC1W7ZW "R E Hedges 1973", we DNF and it's currently disabled but look out in case it re-appears as it's "challenging" ;)

There's a nice Virtual GC5E4D at the Tower of London, then if you want to walk across the bridge there's a decent sized trad GC2GNE7 "GC10 Tower Bridge" for dropping/collecting trackables.

Virtual GC3B88 "Paddington Dare" - An old but good Virtual at Paddington station.

Hopefully some more suggestions will be along soon.

There's not many near olympia (where your conference is), you should be able to get the district line into town though.

The Sherlock series is quite good if you want something "interesting".

If you like different kinds of cache

Are all "different" kinds of cache.

If you want density - there's quite a lot around Westminster and Trafalgar Sq - London itself is mostly fairly well populated.

I'm sure other London based folk will be along to share their wisdom ;-)

Have fun and enjoy your trip - shame your not here for Goldpots event.

Hi LinseyG!

That's a shame, I'm likely to be away for some or all of that week. Otherwise I'd potentially be up to join you for a quick caching run...

I enjoyed R E Hedges, also took a look at "Under the boardwalk" (probably not one to attempt in work clothes), the Sherlock series, the Rainbow series. If you like puzzles I rather liked RSA, which had an interesting twist at GZ that I can't tell you about without spoiling the cache.

If you can travel a little out of town there are caches in some of the parks a little further out - Dulwich Park, Clapham Common etc. Clapham is easily reachable by tube (Clapham Common or Clapham South on the Northern Line) but I wouldn't hang around there at night.

Hello Theodor

I do hope you enjoy your trip in London, no matter which caches you go looking for.

I am fortunate in that I live just 45 minutes by train to London and so have been able to go caching there on a number of trips.

I would certainly recommend caching around Greenwich, there are some great caches in the area and it is a fascinating museum, not to mention being E/W 000.

The British Library - an interesting multi also seems quite popular -GC2M0AF and one that I hope to find myself on my next visit.

Happy caching.
