Is is possible to up load a series or bundle of waypoints - about 125 of them - to my Garmin 60 CSx or to Garmin BaseCamp from an Excel spreadsheet in a single bundle rather than uploading them one at a time?

Yes, as a csv file from Excel you should be able to upload as POI's with Garmins POILoader to the 60csx, you can then search them under Custom POI on the unit.

1. As noted above. Get Excel to export a CSV file and then use the garmin POI loader to get it into the 60CSx as points of interest. Using this method there is virtually no limit on the number of points one can upload. I have more than 100k using this method.

2. Export a CSV file from Excel. Use GPS Visualizer to convert it to a GPX file. Read the GPX file into BaseCamp or MapSource. Export from BaseCamp or MapSource to the 60CSx as waypoints. The 60CSx will handle 1000 waypoints so your 125 quantity isn't an issue unless you have more than 875 other waypoints already.

I am only an intermediate geek. I converted my Excel data to a .csv file but the coordinates still look the same - e.g. S 31 40,639 W069 27,898. It didn't work in GPS Visualizer. Am I missing a comma between the latitude S 31 40,639 and the longitude W069 27,898?

The data order is Longitude, Latitude, Title, Description. East and North are positive. West and South are negative. The decimal separator should be a period rather than a comma. If this doesn't sufficiently address the problem we can use PM.

Yup. Argentina seems to use the same number format as Germany for example, a period as group separator and a comma as decimal point, which is exactly backwards from English speaking countries.

 

GPSVisualizer does allow coordinates in DDD MM.mmm format, so something like this should work:

Now I would like the BaseCamp to list the description for each waypoint rather than the coordinates - which it is currently doing. Can I add the descriptionI via the Visualizer which only wants to upload the coordinates, but NOT the drescription? A related anticipated problem is that my Garmin 60 CSx only allows a limited number of characters for each waypoint description. If I can't get around that, I can live with it. Mini Mart

The GPS visualizer should read/write the description data. Look in the gpx file to see if the data is there, it may be a BaseCamp or 60CSx display item you are seeing in the display of the coordinates. There is a character limit in the description field of waypoints. Using custom POI rather than waypoints one can get around the 30 character limit. Another method is to create multiple waypoints at each location with the description of each one containing up to 30 characters of description.

My son-in-law, an advanced computer geek and EXCEL afficonando - helped with your advice to upload the South American/Andes waypoints onto BaseCamp and into my 60 CSx with the wanted text etc. So this string is complete.
