Can you "Find" your own geocaches

I was wondering what others do so that all of the geocaches you place do not show up as unfound. It is ok to "find" your own geocaches so that they get logged and therefore disappear as caches you need to find?

TIA

While it's possible to log "Found It" for your own caches, it's generally considered bad form to do so, since you can't really "find" something that you know is hidden in a certain spot. There are some exceptions, such as finding a cache that you've adopted.

As a Premium Member, you can place your hidden caches on your "Ignore List." There also are buttons and checkboxes on maps and lists that allow you to hide omit caches that you've already found or have hidden.

The reason why I ask is that I have placed about 20+ caches. A handful are close to my house. Every time I turn on my GPS to find Geocaches mine are listed and I would like them to not show up on this screen of caches I have not found.

Thanks CanadianRockies for the pointers. I wonder if choose the ignore function if it will disable notifications that people have found the caches?

So don't load your owned caches onto the unit.

Where do they show as "unfound"?

The caches we own show up as stars in the caching maps.

You "can" log your own cache(s) as "found". It is technically possible.

But the ethics of doing that have been discussed here on the forums often, and the habit has generally been dismissed as "cheesy".

Ah, here we go. I knew I read about it in the Knowledge Books:

6.5. Logging My Own Cache

Can I log a find on my own cache? What about when I go back to visit?

It is considered "bad form" to log a find on your own cache, no matter when you do it. The same is true if you re-visit another traditional cache (for example to place or retrieve a travel bug). Use the "post a note" log option to record your visit in these circumstances.

In either case, you're not "finding" a cache because you already know where it is. Save the smiley face for use when you've truly discovered a hidden cache.

edit: I took too long to post. LOL Now I know what the OP is talking about, and see the relevant answers from others (ie how to refine your pq's).

You can - per say. There's no technical limitation stopping you, but doing so is usually frowned upon and/or considered bad form. I don't do it. There can be exceptions however. For example, one day you may decide find another persons cache, but then a few weeks/months/years later it may encounter some trouble and need to be either archived or transferred. If you decide to take ownership of the cache through transferral, you may have *found* your own cache...

Normally, one would have logged a "found it" for a cache long before adopting it.

Doesn't sound like this is what is bothering the OP, any way.

"Write note" logs would be sufficient.

PQ's would still block "owned" caches if they were set up that way.

No, you don't have to ignore your own hides. I'm sure this question has been answered by now though. You can in fact have an ignored cache on your watchlist. I hid two caches with a sock puppet account, and that's what I did there. They are both archived now anyways.

I think this whole thing came up the last time this thread was scheduled a couple weeks ago. The only time a premium member would have their own hides staring them in the face as unfound without using the tools available to hide them would be if you do a basic zip code search. Actually my own hides show up in my smartphone app too, but they're working on that one. :)

What I did was realize that there will always be a bucket-load of caches that will never be removed from my unfound list. Plus I need the coords for my caches when I need to do maintenance.

No it seems I can't. I went to do a maintenance run the other day and it seems that I am the only one that can't find it. I logged a DNF on my cache and since that day it has been found 2 or 3 more times. Guess I need to head back out and try again so I can get the log replaced

You aren't alone. I've had to tell multiple cache owners where their caches were, because where I found (and replaced) them was not where they originally hid them. Cache migration takes its toll.

Also logging your own cache as found is the only thing we ever describe verbatim as "bad form" other than the act of discussing puzzle cache solutions in the forums.
