I would really like to get my coins entered, but I still cannot access the form. When I click on the link to the form, this is what I get:

"The form "8th International Math Trade" is no longer accepting responses.

Try contacting the owner of the form if you think this is a mistake."

Please help??!

I fixed that before I sent out the email message to all participants. You should be able to access the form now. You can also enter coins directly onto the spreadsheet if all else fails.

It looks like people may have been a little careless with how they are editing their coins -- or trying to sort the sheet. Please make sure you only edit your coins and don't try to format the page.

Thank you very much for fixing it! Got the email and I entered all my coins. Thanks for doing the math trade!

That's it!

The coin submission phase is closed!

We ended up with 37 participants and 1122 coins for trade!

Now the Regroup Phase begins. If you are interested in regrouping coins to make an extra special package in the hopes of landing that one must-have coin, then follow the instructions below. When you are satisfied with the way your coins stand, please let me know via email or a post to this thread. Remember, regrouping is optional. If you simply want to trade your coins off one by one as they are now listed, all you need to do is send an email to the address below saying that you are done regrouping. If everyone finishes with the regrouping early, we can move on to the Want List Phase early.

Please contact me if you have any questions. The Regroup Phase will be open until January 21st, 9:00 PM EST (next Saturday).

Regrouping Instructions:

The Regroup Phase gives all participants the chance to create sets of two or more of their coins. You can do this to make an offer more attractive to others (and therefore to have a potentially higher chance to get a specifically wanted coin). Remember -- if you decide to group two or more coins together, these will only be traded as a complete set (or not at all).

To regroup your offers, please send an email to:

mathtrade8@gmail.com

containing the line numbers and the coin descriptions of all coins for each coin set you want to create. Also mention your geocaching.com nickname -- just as an extra measure of insurance to keep me from making mistakes.

-------------------------------------------

Example:

Let's say I have seen some must-have coins that I, well, must have. Unfortunately, I feel that the coins I am offering -- on their own -- won't seal the deal. So I decide to combine some of my coins into sets. I'll fire off an email with the required info:

Regrouping for E&Cplus3:

Group1

ID 280 11-11-11 Multi Event Halifax

ID 281 11-11-11 Multi Event Ontario

ID 282 11-11-11 Multi Event United Kingdom

Group2

ID 292 Discover Your World II XLE gold

ID 293 Discover Your World II XLE silver

-------------------------------------------

Please use the ID's as listed on the COINS OFFERED worksheet in the Mathtrade8 document.

Make sure you only use the numbers in the column titled "REFER TO THIS COLUMN ONLY!"

Please let me know if you have any questions about this process. You can post your questions here, or email them.

It's time to start explaining the trickiest part of this whole mathtrade thing: The Want List Phase.

Everyone now has a list of coins they are offering -- some grouped, some not. And most likely everyone has had a look through the whole list to see what they would like to get. How do we get there? By creating the Want Lists!

The general idea for a Want List is to define which of your own coins can be traded against which offered coins.

The following syntax is used:

own_coin_ID : wanted_ID_1 wanted_ID_2 .. wanted_ID_n

The colon (':') is used as a separator between the 'own_coin_ID' and the chosen wanted coins. The list of wanted coins is delimited by a space (' ').

As you can see, you have to specify a single 'own_coin_ID' and a list of possible IDs of all coins that you would accept as a trade for this coin. You are free to choose from all other coins when creating your lists. Furthermore, you are not limited to a single coin -- you can append all coins (via their respective coin IDs) that you are accepting as a trade. Theoretically, you could append the IDs of ALL the coins in this trade to your list.

The appearance of the IDs of the wanted coins is of importance, as it represents the order of preference in the list. In the first position is the 'most wanted' trade, and in the last position would be the 'least acceptable' trade.

If there is only one coin that you would trade your coin for, then there will only be one 'wanted_ID' in your list. If there are NO coins that you find acceptable as a trade for your coin, just leave the want list blank.

Okay, enough theory. Let's see it in action!

Looking at the list, I own the coins with the IDs 279 to 310 -- or 32 coins. If I had grouped some of those coins, my Want List would have been a few lines shorter (each group -- regardless of the number of coins it contains -- will only have one line in the Want List)

So, let's say that I consider my Earth Turtle coin (ID 298) to be the primo coin that I have offered. Looking through the list I find a few coins that I would like, but some really stand out: the Tranquility coins (319, 320, 400, etc), Some Compass Rose coins (427, 428, etc) and the Delft Blau (507). Of those, I would favour the Delft Blau over the Tranquilities, followed by the Compass Rose. So my entry for the Earth Turtle (theoretically) would look like:

298 : 507 319 320 400 427 428

I don't have any sets this year, but if I did, I would only have one entry in my Want List for the whole set. When listing a set, you only have to enter a single ID number and ignore the letters. If I had combined the Dutch 2011 coins my set would have been labelled as 295A, 295B, 295C. My want list for the set would look like:

295 : 507 319 320 400 427 428

Looking through the rest of the coins, there are only 8 that I would like to add to my collection. However, I still have 30 listings left to account for! If I list the IDs for only those 8 coins for each of my remaining coins, this will mean at best that 8 of my coins trade! But, for the sake of this exercise, that is what I'll do. The coins I want have the IDs 734 through 741, and that's the order of priority as well:

279 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
280 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
281 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
.
.
.
310 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741

There! All done! Except for one thing. For some reason, I decide not to trade my Area 51 UFO coin (ID 283). Maybe I can't part with it; maybe I've already traded it for a coin outside of the mathtrade. To show that it is unavailable, I either don't list it, or I list it with an empty line for the wanted coins:

283 :

NOW my want list is done! For the convenience of my host, I will add my nick in parentheses in front of each line, and the whole list ends up looking like:

(E&Cplus3) 279 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
(E&Cplus3) 280 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
(E&Cplus3) 281 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
(E&Cplus3) 282 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741
(E&Cplus3) 283 :

(E&Cplus3) 310 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741

Now I can send this list in an email to:

mathtrade8@gmail.com

There is one issue that I haven't discussed yet: How to prevent receiving the same coin more than once.

But I'll leave that for another post. I'll let y'all absorb the info in this post first.

Two people have pointed out errors in their lists that have somehow cropped up.

Could you please look over your list of coins to make sure that it is accurate. I can make changes to the spreadsheet still if necessary. But I'd like to get things fixed before people start make Want Lists.

Cheers,

ChuckT

Thanks for the great excplanation Chuck!May I be so bold as to add a small comment (actually two, it's "blauw" and not "blau" as you should know very well :P)?

When making your want list for your 'less ambitious coins, it does no harm to include the targets of your 'more ambitious coins as well.

If you want to trade your Earth Turtle coin (ID 298) only for coins 507 319 320 400 427 428,I think it's a good idea to put these coins also at the beginning of you want lists for other coins (that you will probably not get these for, but you never know).

So instead of:

(E&Cplus3) 294 : 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741

(E&Cplus3) 298 : 507 319 320 400 427 428

you would get:

(E&Cplus3) 294 : 507 319 320 400 427 428 734 735 736 737 738 739 740 741

(E&Cplus3) 298 : 507 319 320 400 427 428

I hope I have explained what I meant reasonably well. If not, please feel free to clarify (or comment, of course).

I checked and my list is still correct :)

My list looks fine. I have a couple of questions:

Would it be possible to have the list sorted by the coin numbers so that "grouped" coins are next to each other?

Also, I understand how to make my wish list, but isn't how it looks going to change once we learn how to set it up so we don't get duplicate coins?

Has the "create your wish list" phase started now, even though it's not the 21st?

Thanks!
