hbutchy Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Our family is VERY new to geocaching; we love it! We're lucky to live near deeply wooded areas and within a short driving distance of two large cities, so I think that purchasing a GPS to use "in conjunction with" our iPhones/geocaching app may be the way to go. Any advice on a GPS that will give us the necessary features to grow with the hobby AND be compatible with a Mac? I'm hoping to keep within a price range of $200. Thanks so much for your help! Quote
+SmallsKC Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 (edited) Garmin has great Mac compatibility and I am also on a Mac. We just started caching this summer. We used our iPhones until just last month when we finally purchased a GPS. We got the Garmin Dakota 20 for $300. We love it. I would recommend making a list of "must have" features and "would like to have" features first. Then you can narrow your search based on your must have list. If you need help figuring out which features are great to have let me know and I'll let you know what our Must Haves were and why. Edited November 12, 2011 by SmallsKC Quote
+user13371 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 (edited) You can get much lower than your $200 budget. $119 MSRP for a Garmin eTrex 10. It's Mac compatible, and as simple as you can get -- greyscale screen, no maps, but it'll hold 1000 waypoint PLUS 500 geocaches (with detailed descriptions, logs, and hints), and it can keep a "breadcrumb trail" tracking where you've wandered. And little else. If you're already using your iPhone for geocaching, you've got really good maps, downloading caches, and online logging. The eTrex 10 would serve as an ideal adjunct to the phones: More accurate, waterproof, overall more rugged, better battery life. And did I mention how cheap it is? You could buy two of them for what some higher-end models cost. Edited November 12, 2011 by Portland Cyclist Quote

sabrefan7 Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Garmin and Delorme are both very good I have a Garmin 60csx and a Delorme pn60 both mac compatible. I would get something that you can read the cache page on the unit (paperless) plus have topo maps in color. Its a bit more money but in the long run you will be much better off take a look at Ebay and Amazon you can find a deal there Quote
