Explination of Icons

Since you fail to provide specifics it is difficult to answer. The icons used on the forum pages that list all the topics in a forum can be identified by doing the following:

place your cursor on the icon

right click

select "View Image Info"

read the entry in the "Associated Text" field.

Awkward? Sure is. Groundspeak needs to hire someone with a background in Human Interface Design. On the page that lists the forums, you can hover over the icon. Try hovering on the topics page and you get nothing. Sigh...

Sorry I was not that clear. The icons I am questioning are those that appear through out the Geocaching site. They include a red cross, a TB with a diagonal slash through it, and many others. Now that i want an explanation I can't even find the page that has them. This is without a doubt the toughest site I have ever used with no explanations for those just starting.

The smiling face and the blue face I have figured out.

If you're asking about the icons in the Info field on Search Pages, Red Cross means it's been logged with a Needs Maintenance that hasn't been dealt with by the CO. The silver dog-tag icon means there's a travel bug. gold circle means a geo-coin. Half dog-tag half circle means TB and Coin. There's a few other icons for specific types of Coins/trackables that I haven't seen explained why they get specific icons rather than the generic one.

Geocoins (which I think technically includes items that are designed to work like TravelBugs but are not made by Groundspeak) can get unique icons when they're originally designed. If the designer wants it to have one.

As far as icons on this site and the Geocaching.com site, in my experience for the majority of them you can just park the mouse cursor over the icon and wait a sec, and a tooltip should pop up telling you what it is. (The easier way of viewing the Alternate Text.) This should work for almost every icon, from the ones above the Fast Reply box and next to your name in the posts above, to the various icons found in every log entry.
