Reference Point found, but not in database

Hi everybody,

 

today we tried to find a TB Motel in Gillette WY GC12TXB: Coords: N 44° 16.682 W 105° 29.695

 

But instead of the TB Motel we have found a Reference Marker but can't find in the database (or we are simply blind).

STA 242467.2

EL 4536.83

 

That Reference Marker can be found on the lawn beside a visitor center near the I 90.

 

Has anyone seen that Marker and can help me? Or knows were I can log it? It's the first time we found sth. like that.

Without the photo it would be kind of hard to tell what exactly it is you found, unless you recall any more writing on it. There are benchmarks of multiple types placed by multiple agencies, so it could be some sort of local benchmark or it could be one that is only noted in written records. Tried Waymarking.com, a Benchmark viewer, and Geocaching's Benchmark search and didn't turn up anything close. If we could figure out from the photo what exactly it is, then you might be able to add it to Waymarking.com.

 

Edit: I underestimated myself, I think it might be a State Highway Department Reference Marker. Haven't been able to find any hints of an online database, but I might not have been using the right search terms. There are some on Waymarking.com and mention of them in NGS datasheets, though the STA numbers don't look the same as the one you mentioned, so it would be good to take a close look at the photo to check that.

Looks like a highway right-of-way marker.

In Arizona there are many that have been included in the database, but many bazillions more that have not.

There are mentions of those ROW markers being used as reference objects in NGS datasheets. Like this one:

So you might be able to use info in datasheets to help find more of those disks if you want to try looking for them.

It's not an NGS benchmark and (as far as I know) that one isn't even referenced in an NGS datasheet, so any documentation on it is probably held by the Wyoming Department of Transportation. (There are lots of local benchmarks, property boundry markers, and right of way markers that are not in the NGS database and were not created by the NGS.)

 

Because this particular item is not in the Waymarking.com database, you'd have to add it. Here are some examples of similar right of way marks that are already entered:

Make sure you are logged in, and click the Post a New Waymark link. However you would probably want to have good coordinates of the disk in question. (Averaged if possible, like hiding a Geocache.) Pictures of the surrounding area might be nice if you have any, but apparently aren't required.
