Good swag/Bad swag game

I've spent many hours today rearranging the furniture in our house and the contents to make room for some new desks that Mr F.'s office were throwing out. So I now have a pile of stuff I don't want and was wondering if some of it would make good swag or not. As the subject comes up quite often, and others might want a quick answer on whether the object they are thinking of putting in a cache is good swag (for someone, not necessarily for you). I'll start off with an item and you say if it's good or bad swag, then suggest something else and someone carries it on.

First up: Some glitter glue sticks in their own little lock & lock (put into an ammo can or larger lock & lock).

Sounds ok to me... would they melt if it got hot? At least you are putting them in a separate container so they wouldn't leak all over if they did melt.

Excellent - Darrick, you suggest the next item. :-)

Ok, kids, do we need to pass the pineapple to get the game going in an orderly fashion!:rolleyes:

Lampwork beads are great if they are in a cache where they won't be knocked about too much and break, and if they are wrapped up (so you can see them, but there's some protection. Maybe attached to some card behind them in a zip lock?

Yugioh cards (Not sure what they are, but they got missed out)

They are like pokemon cards, but they are unique to their game. You could use them if you'd like, but personaly I would not take them ( I still have half of my old collection from when I was younger)

I was thinking about putting in some old matchbox/hotweel cars.

Posted

Matchbox/Hotwheels cars - fantastic. If metal, nice put in a zip lock bag to ward off the damp (in our climate!)

How about....a zip lock bag of small craft items - pipe cleaners, pompoms, googly eyes, foam shapes, sequins, fimo(sculpey) buttons.

Craft items ... yes! Good! My kids would go for that.

Dumped some Harry Potter PC games in one of my caches yesterday (like you, Mrs F, we were having a clear-out).

We're Mac people so PC games would be bad swag.

How about baggies full of assorted Legos?

Lego! :D That's something that hasn't changed since I was a kid and is still expensive to buy new - so I'd love to find that. I'm hanging onto ours in case we/for when get grandchildren!

So next on my pile of stuff to sort out...another craft project: a pottery night light holder (I'd remove the candle from it) with things to stick onto it (little gems, sequins, etc.) Too fragile?

If carefully packaged it might be nice.

How about an easy one. Those little bottles of bubble soap they give out at weddings.

Posted

Little bottles of bubbles make huge messes...that is a no go.

(Love the lego idea! We would collect those.)

How about smashed pennies.

Smashed pennies are OK, not great so TPLgolfball.

A good quality, clean, newish golfball is good swag for someone if it's in a big enough cache, and there are none in there already! (Wouldn't interest us, but they're ok, some people like them.)

How about some marbles?

Posted

Hiking guides are good if it is a clean, dry cache.

Perhaps we could trade Fianccetto's marbles for one.

I'd take the marbles since I seem to have lost mine.

I've got some little trinkets sitting around, made of both wood and stone. Different animal shapes.

No to the wipes I take nothing that could be tampered with

Legos - yes

Craft items - yes

Hotwheels - yes

Any trading card - yes

My son LOVES golf balls

Marbled -yes

Glow sticks can be deadly to four legged cache crashers

How about polished stones?

Posted

Polished stones...If they are semi precious stones (tiger's eye, amethyst, fluorite) we love those, and collect them. One year my kids got (named) stones in their advent calendars instead of chocolate! (They loved it, really they did! :o )

We love the foreign coins as well.

What about a set of water-based felt tipped pens?

Hand sanitizing wipes are nice and practical. The parents will appreciate them.

My favorite thing to find (and leave) in a cache are foreign coins.

My favorite thing to leave are foreign coins! I was in Costa Rica on business in May and kept asking folks to give me change in Colones, rather than US (the country operates at 500:1 without any sort of hesitation about taking one or the other -- but the tendency is to give you change in US if you give them US). The looks I got were amusing -- Why on Earth would you want a 5 colones coin? The answer, of course, was to have about 4 pounds in loose Costa Rica money to leave as swag!

I did the same thing in South Korea -- at the hotel, they had a couple of rolls of W10 coins -- worth about 1 cent each -- so I bought them and I had cool trade stuff for weeks!

I thought the same & put a sealed wipe in a cache of mine, a year later did some manintaince, because of logs saying wet/damp log....wipe was tattered & still in the bottom of cache, opened it & it was almost dried out, Log book was damp & falling apart. Cache container was a metal, wide mouth thermos...

Ooh, shark teeth, never found those, or arrow heads. Nice items to see.

What about a pair of small cupboard doorknobs (about 0.75 inches across) made of wood, in original box? Would there be any takers?

Posted

Bouncy balls are great (even if they do make me look like unfit & ungainly, but they're great swag!)

I have a bag of plastic bits - they are samples from a company that makes/made extruded plastic. All different colours. Useful art/craft finds, or rubbish?

Reusable shopping bag as long as the cache is big enough and dry enough. That's all we use when we shop and they're nice to have.

Deck of casino playing cards (used by the casino, but still have the "Official Casino Playing Cards" seal on them that the casino puts on before distributing to players. Obviously in a dry cache or in a small ziploc baggy that is just big enough for the cards.

Posted (edited)

Don't think I would take the reusable shopping bags - unless it is some sort of canvas tote bag? Then maybe :P

-edit-

Someone posted at the same time as me! Hehe -

The cards, hmmm I am not sure! As you stated, would definitely need to be in a dry cache... If they are real nifty, then probably!! :)

Little Army Men!! :P

The casino cards and the little army men are both excellent. We would leave them for someone else, probably, but a lot of people would swap for them. (I just bought a pack of little lego army men to leave as swag! :P )

How about gummed craft paper, all different colours? Is there a way to package it so it won't all stick together in one lump?

Posted (edited)

Hey cliff notes, I got the arrow heads! What is left in the box is the cupboard knobs, the plastic shapes (useless unless you are plastics sculptor or junk modeler) and some gummed paper!

I think this game might be demonstrating how swag gets worse. Maybe I didn't trade up. Ok then, I will throw in a macdonald's toy and a rosette with '1st' written on it.

Gummed paper??? <_< Are we talking ZigZags cause "Dave's not here" :P

Fine I grab the "Gummed Paper" to make room for my

dayglow orange acrylic dice

Have fun with the gummed paper. There is a very thin layer of glue on the back of each sheet (like the glue on envelopes you need to lick to close) it's similar to the type of craft paper Matisse made his Snail from (but not quite!) I don't think I'll be putting them in a cache...maybe my kids can use them for a paper mache project. And stick the bits of plastic on too..

How about those key chain thingies with the strap that goes around your neck.

I get them from Nascar races and bike nights at the local watering hole.

They usually have beer brand names on the straps.

Would not take McDonalds toy, Lanyard, cards, or scrabble tiles...

Would take a shark tooth in a heartbeat. Maybe kids garden gloves as long as the cache was dry.

Would leave a 1/2 (cut) small geode for the tooth or gloves.
