LPC's.

Recommended Posts

We had a cache in the bottom level of a 2 floor parking garage. Since most folks would enter by way of the top floor, which is ground level, they did not know about the bottom floor. The cache was placed on the bottom floor with the same coordinates of a LP on the top floor. The cache name was "If it's not here then where is it?" We archieved it when skate boarders started using the bottom floor and drawing attention from security.

When I first started and didn't know yet that lamp post skirts lifted up, I DNF'd one twice behind the local WalMart. Then when I learned the "secret", I went back there again and triumphantly lifted the skirt to find...nothing. Turns out the cache was under a fence post cap about 10 feet away. Every LPC I've encountered since then has been an actual LPC, but I'll always remember that very first one for being the one that was not.

The first one I found. I DNFed it the first time I looked for it and several months latter I finally went back and got it. It was about 125 miles away and I had never heard of a LPC before. I thought it was a most clever hide! :anitongue:

It just go to show that a good thing over done become something not worth the trouble.

I know that no one likes 'um. But has anyone ever found a creative one?

How about a Fake lightpost cache? Or toy lightpost cache? :anitongue:

Who says no one likes 'um? A vocal group keeps putting them down, but they don't speak for everybody. I've learned not to let others decide what I like, or don't like.

I've seen a spectrum of them, from parking lots to a wooded path on a college campus (fooled me for awhile, I kept looking in the fallen logs) to a micro park with a great view of Mt Rainier over a small pond. My first one had a great name "Where's the Salt Shaker?" - in the parking lot of the Peppermill Casino in Reno. Containers have varied widely too - Film cans, small lock n' locks, and bisons in camo (a small skull for a halloween themed one and a section of bee hive with the bison inside - that one fooled a group of 30 cachers for quite some time - are two that stand out).

In my opinion, the small vocal group is the defenders, or "every cache is a gift" crowd. :) I know several people with 5,000+ finds who have probably found 1,000 of them apiece, who regularly crack jokes about how lame they are. But I do know some defenders too. Maybe most of the people I know are just mean though. After all, my name is Mr. Yuck. :o

A bison in a section of a bee hive, now that is a seriously good one, considering the high probability of Bee's under those things!

You do realize that "people with 5,000+ finds" is already a very small minority of geocachers, don't you? According to the latest stats that I've seen Jeremy post, most active geocaching accounts have fewer than 50 finds logged.

Stats which I do not buy into. The numbers can be made to say that, of course, but it sure isn't anywhere near close to what I see in day to day caching life.

To the OP:

I had one for a short time that I thought was pretty unique. First, I had to find a lamp with a magnetic skirt. Many are not. Next, I cut a sheet of plexiglas to the size of one of the sides, and glued magnets to the corner. I fashioned a little holder for a log. Painted the plexiglas to match, and hid it on the inside of the skirt. You could look right at it and not see it for what it really was.

Problems were twofold... one, if the finder wasn't careful, the cache would keep the skirt from dropping all the way down, and 2) I knew that it was there without permission. I pulled it after only a few finds (and several DNFs), mostly because of the 2nd reason. But it was fun while it lasted.

Not only do I realize it, I've brought it up often in the forums to the "all about the numbers crowd", who often appear to be clueless about how small their numbers are. Same with that other fringe element, the FTF hounds.

Point being, I suppose, I know many a person who runs out and finds anything and everything listed on the website, and pretty much roll their eyes every time they have to lift another skirt.

I will defend the people who set a few LPCs. They cache is in a place that's usually dry, stays in place, doesn't migrate and is so obvious that if one thinks an LPC is beneath them to find, they can just drive by. A minority "numbers guy" and "FTF" hound. But I absolutely praise the diversity of geocaches....that's what will keep the game going.

Well, I hate the bees that like to sting me as I find them but this thread has given me a few good ideas. Now all I got to do is figure a way to lug a light post a few miles into the scrub on my back.

I acknowledge gsmx2, who was obviously responding to multiple comments by me, but I'm already apparently to blame for veering it off topic. Well then A & J Tooling, that's why the bison in the broken off piece of unused nest is clever. And it sounds like Clan Riffster lugged a lamp post into the woods, maybe he can offer some ideas. Worst I ever dragged into the woods (maybe a half mile) was a gigantic oversized birdhouse.

Got one recently that took me repeated tries. The gps points right at it from quite a ways away. It's obvious. It's the only thing even remotely close to something that could hide a cache. There's the rub...it's also in one of the busier areas of town. A parking lot that is used by the locals as a pass through to another street to avoid a very long light. It's constantly busy, and knee deep in muggles. It's also a favorite hiding spot for deputy muggle because of the traffic level... The challenge was stealth. The container itself was very cool, and it took many tries, and a vast amount of patience to get it. The rest of the LPC's I've encountered have been mundane. One we found on vacation was removed by the owner the day after we found it. Somehow being Ltf was kind of cool on it's own.

I guess I'm the exception to your assertion that no one likes LPCs. In the Spring and Fall, when I can get out in the woods, I avoid LPCs because I prefer the hiking. However, when it's 100 degrees in the shade or 10 degrees in the sun, I like to pick up a few LPCs just so I can stay active. To each his own.

I have seen a few that might be called creative, but it involves not being under the skirt, but rather high up on the pole or cleverly hidden somewhere else on the concrete support pillar.

We found one last weekend that had about 4 "false" hides all hidden on the same light post...starting with the obvious container under the skirt, which just contained a note that said "I would have looked here first too...keep looking!". We went through I think 3 more fake hides before we finally found the "real" cache. Had us laughing by the time we found it. I liked that one.

I have an LPC in my favorites too for two reasons. One is that it was just so darn cool and interesting to look at it. A lot of effort went into that cache. More effort than I have seen with many ammo can hides (doesn't take much thought to toss an ammo can under a fallen tree). Also I had to give a hand to the cache owner for doing the right thing and getting permission before placing the cache as well.

That's like saying nobody like Jusin Bieber. I've never heard any of his music, but from what I can tell he's sold a LOT of CDs to somebody.

And if nobody likes LPCs, why are there so many of them out there that get a LOT of finds?

But has anyone ever found a creative one? big_smile.gif

I've found several that I thought were creative. Not just a film canister under the skirt.
