Comparing GPS units

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have been looking into buying a better GPS (using an E-trex H at the moment.) I have read up on it and decided that I like the Garmin devices with touch screen.

My question is about the differences between the Dakota 20 and Oregon 200 models. The Dakota is a little below my budget while the Oregon is a little over my budget. Having compared the specifications side by side, I'm struggling to see the difference between the two units. While this would point towards getting the Dakota, I'm sure I must be missing something. Can anyone tell me what makes the Oregon that little bit more expensive and whether it is worth the extra cost.

Thanks

EDIT: I can see that the Oregon has a slightly bigger screen and better resolution but I can't see this making much of a difference to my geocaching!

Avoid the Oregon x00 models, if anything, look into the 450. If it's beyond your budget, then the Dakota 20 is the better choice.

Well for one thing the Oregon 200 was discontinued a while ago.

Here is what the Dakota has over the Oregon:

Electronic Compass 3-axis

850Mb internal memory vs 24mb on the Oregon

Barometric altimeter

Unit-to-unit transfer

Overall the Dakota has a slightly smaller screen but is otherwise a superior unit in almost every other way. If you can't find the Oregon for less then the Dakota then your getting ripped off.

This seemed like a good continuation of GPS unit questions. I'm looking at a Magellan eXplorist 310. Does anyone have experience with that line? It looks like exactly what I want. I don't want to spend more than $200.

I used to be a great Magellan fan. I am no more. I think that their units are not competitive with others on the market.

You can get a remanufactored Delorme PN-40 for less than $200, or a new one for about $250. Much better deal, in my opinion.
