+ShibuyaCrow Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Hi there, I don't have an iPhone, but I do have an iTouch. What I'm wanting to do is go paperless on my iTouch to buddy up with my garmin gps. The idea being use the itouch when I'm in wifi area to download (?) or focus in on the Caches I want to hunt, and then use my GPS to find them. Thus going paperless, but still having the info for each cache on hand on my iTouch. Does this idea seem do-able? Any app recommendations? I'm investigating this idea as I want to know if it's worth the $$'s for the app. Being a student every dollar counts. Quote

+Mr. Wilson & a Mt. Goat Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I don't have either Apple products, but I've heard that when you have internet access you can "favorite" geocache listings on the app so they are available for view when you can't access the net. Quote

This all depends on just how you look at the situation. In that an itouch has this adverse reaction to water, and another like reaction to being dropped (not on the carpeting, mind you), I think you just might want to spend the money you save (by not trashing the itouch), and buy a real decent paperless GPSr that really doesn't mind so much being immersed or dropped down a mountain-side. Probably in comparison, the cost of the app is miniscule! Something to mull over between classes, what? Edited August 9, 2011 by Gitchee-Gummee Quote

Fortunately no one noticed my little scurry down the stairs to check the damage. It looked like this Edited August 9, 2011 by Ambient_Skater Quote

+TomToad Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 The official app works great. You need the paid version, free version is useless without a GPSr on the device. I think Geosphere is better, but downloading PQs is a bit slower (might get better once they switch to the new API), also steeper learning curve. Quote
+mpilchfamily Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 For a the first several months of caching i used my iTouch to keep the paperless data with me while caching. You don't need to have a wi-fi connection out in the field to view the cache info. Just go through the official paid app and find the caches you want. Mark them as a favorite and they will be in the saved tab ready to view out in the field with no wi-fi needed. I just got tired of juggling 2 devices in the field. So i got a paperless unit and already had a PM. Quote

Dropbox is a free sync and backup program that has a folder that is synced to all computers or devices you have. It is great. 1) Find the caches you want, and go to the print dialog icon and print to PDF. (The good thing is you printout the map that would be on the paper printout.) 2) Put the PDFs in the Dropbox folder. 3) When you are on WiFi sync the Dropbox on your iTouch with your computer and click the star icon to save to your iTouch. Yes, Dropbox works on the iTouch, and did I mention it is free! Cheers! Edited August 9, 2011 by Random Gadfly Quote
+ShibuyaCrow Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 OH. Genius! I use Evernote, but I think it's the same idea that you're talking about! I'll give it a shot! Quote
+kklems Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 An I-touch works fine for geocaching. If you have the latest Ios you could load multiple caches into different windows. (Kind of pain but easily done.) IE go to gc.com, pick the cache you want and go to that page. Than open a new browser window and load another cache and so on. Would get cumbersome but allow to view a dozen or so cache pages like you were online. If you don't want to go that route you will probably have to buy an app to store your cache info. I like Geosphere and use that on a regular basis. ($8.99 I think) You can load PQ or gpx files to itouch either directly or via a file service like drop box. I just download via the PQ tab on the app and it works fine. I think my main database has over 10K in caches (only shows 4k at a time) so I always have caches in my i-touch if I am out and around. You can also use the i-touch as a stand alone gpsr by pairing with a BT or cradle gps. I like the dual electronics bluetooth gps but also have a dual xps gps cradle. The thing I like about the bluetooth gps is I can put my i-touch in a otterbox defender case which really protects it for from falls and some water exposure (dropping in a lake would probably not work. ) My typical paperless layout 4th generation I-pod touch with otterbox defender. Running geosphere and I also like to have Navigon (navigation software that will route you to the cache location.) Dual Gps Blueooth. Quote
+CarlfromOH Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 This thread is a couple of months old, but it came up on a search I was doing. It sounds like the OP is looking for a program or app for his iTouch that works like "CacheMate" works on the Palm Pilot. Can anyone answer the question in that way? Quote
