Cheap GPS for a beginner

Recommended Posts

Hi, looking for a cheap entry-level GPS for a beginner (hate my phone for gps, its just so slow and useless), where can I get a gps (in the uk) and how much would I be looking to pay for a entry-level gps which is relatively ok for geocaching.

Not expecting anything great as I want to spend as little as possible atm due to being unemployed and being new to geocaching (when I get a job will upgrade).

What are your recommendations for something cheap and easy to use?

many thanks

Also check out the Geomate Jr. If doesn't have as many GPS functions as the etrex H but is only $50 and comes preloaded with 250,000 Geocaches. I find it to be more user friendly than the etrex h and only costs $50.

The etrex H is a great little GPSr, but it's just that...it doesn't have any cache details on it apart from the co-ordinates. You could use your phone for reading the cache details and then use the etrex to find them.

One things though is to get the most of it you need a cable (£15), and unless you want to download co-ordinates one at a time premium membership.

Ebay is your best bet, but search about, I got my step-son one for £20 :)

What kind of phone do you have? I have issues with my phone but I feel they are related to the fact its a low end android and if I get a better phone most my problems will be solved.

Just a thought but if you wanted to go for paperless caching on the cheap without changing you phone, you could try a used iPod touch with the GC app and the Garmin Etrex. Only downside you wouldn't be able to do a search unless you're near a wifi hotspot, but it worked for me when I went on holiday to the USA earlier this year.

I have a VZW HTC Thunderbolt. It's been extremely accurate when using it to cache. I use it to log and upload pictures, and to read logs. I much prefer using a handheld GPS. Much more durable and long lasting.
