+Onslow Fisherman
Hi, I am trying to build up a list of early caches in New Zealand. I started by trawling through GS from GC1, GC2,GC3,GC4 etc. The first in NZ was GC45, now archived. This was followed by GC46 which is still active. I was hoping that there might be some simpler means other than trawling. Jim Quote Link to comment

+addisonbr
I may be able to help. I am a bit of an aficionado of caching stats and early caching history stuff. I once built a spreadsheet that contains the first 4000 waypoints or so, and where the caches are located. Here's what I see for New Zealand. Please keep in mind this may not be exhaustive, nor error-free... For example, I'm not sure that I was able to pick up PMO caches, and since I wasn't looking for New Zealand caches when I did this project I didn't double-check the data. But, should save you at least some of the trawling Good luck with your project. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC45 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC46 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC49 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC4A http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC4B http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCAF http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB0 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB1 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB2 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB9 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCDC http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCDD http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCE9 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC137 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC153 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1AE http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1AF http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1B0 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1B1 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1C8 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC246 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC29E http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC2A0 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC33D http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC34F http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC366 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC38E http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC450 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC542 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC547 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC69F http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC7E6 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC7E7 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC7E8 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC7EA http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC89A http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB69 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB6C http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB6E http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB84 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCB8F http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCC59 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCD66 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCDBA http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCE94 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCEB9 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCED9 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCEDB http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCEDD http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCEE0 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCEE3 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1059 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1073 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC112C Quote Link to comment

+Ashallond
addisonbr, anyway that you could look at Arkansas or let someone trawl through it? See, there's a few of us that have gotten bored with new caches, so we are going around to look for old archived caches that are still out there...and we're finding a bunch of them. It's just hard at times to find references to really old ones. Quote Link to comment

Pup Patrol
Hi, I am trying to build up a list of early caches in New Zealand. I started by trawling through GS from GC1, GC2,GC3,GC4 etc. The first in NZ was GC45, now archived. This was followed by GC46 which is still active. I was hoping that there might be some simpler means other than trawling. Jim I just went to my profile, scrolled down to the "List newest in Ontario", clicked that link, and when the list came up, clicked on the "placed" column. That reverses the order from newest to oldest. Quote Link to comment

That reverses the order from newest to oldest. That works well for active caches, but for archived caches some other strategies need to be developed. AFAIK there is no simple way to find the listings - they can be trawled for or stumbled across one at a time via the found lists of old-timey cachers, possibly extracted from really old PQ results. But especially for old caches that weren't found very often - or weren't found at all - it can be pretty difficult. Quote Link to comment

I am working through the process of working on the profiles of the early "placers" and the early "finders" This approach requires time and patience. Some seem to have made only one placement or only one find. I still have some questions for my next posting. Jim Quote Link to comment

But, should save you at least some of the trawling Good luck with your project. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC45 How do you get a truncated url as above? I found an archived one that wasn't on your list and my url for this is much longer: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=5a107f2e-4829-43f9-bf76-0b7123d69da3&log=y&decrypt=GC7E9 Seems as the shotened form in the post but when I add it to my spreadsheet it comes out in the long form. Will from here but not from my excel spreadsheet. Yours all do. So the question still stands. Jim Edited July 25, 2011 by Onslow Fisherman Quote Link to comment
I!
Perhaps GS should have a "search archived caches too" option in PQs. For historians only, of course; not to plan an afternoon's smiley-hunting. EDIT: ah, posted for a different reason, but this suggestion looks like what I wanted. Edited July 25, 2011 by I! Jim You can use an even shorter form: http://coord.info/GC7E9 It will redirect you to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC7E9 - same style as the OP's. For other caches, just change the cache ID at the end of the url. Quote Link to comment

I'm not sure what is going on there. Dj Storm is right - the most efficient way to represent the URL is using the coord.info shortener. Looks so much cleaner in an email or blog post, too. Yes it was linking via the post but not from my excel page. The dj Storm suggestion works for me off the spreadsheet and is less space consuming. This is what I wanted and am doing. BTW I am progressing with building up the list. My goal is to get the first New Zealand 100. It is taking some trawling and patience. I am up to 76 and look forward to the day when I can release the list and have someone cast a critical eye over it and find one I've missed !! Jim Quote Link to comment
+Team Taran
It's easy to search for the oldest active caches. Just go to hide and seek a cache and search by state than go to the last page. To find archived caches I would look first at the early hiders profiles to see if they hid any others that were archived and then the finders. I'm not a real fan of going to search for archived caches since you don't know why they were archived but I do like to go to oldest caches and do put them on my to do list when I visit a new location. I don't always get them found though. Quote Link to comment

I don't always get them found though. That is the approach I'm taking, looking at the profiles of the early hiders and finders. My interest in archived caches is purely historical not to go loking for them. If I happen to be near one whilst on an otherwise search my interest might be enough to prompt me to have a look. My goal, as stated earlier, is to build up a list of the first 100 hides in New Zealand. To achieve that I need to research the archived one too. I'm getting there by the method that you also would choose. Jim Quote Link to comment
+Onslow Fisherman
I have a list of active, temporarily unavailable and archived caches in New Zealand covering the years 2000 and 2001. There are 104 items (cache listings) in my DB. There is still a lot of work to do though to ferret out any that I might have missed. It's been a slow and painstaking process and it feels good to have made what progress I have. Jim Quote Link to comment
