Countdown to the Geolympix!

Recommended Posts

So using your logic, if I suggested some obscene act with a donkey, then it would be OK for him to post a picture of one?

slight difference there eh?

Not at all,

1. The original post included the name of an "adult actress"

2. The Picture is a picture of a lady who is known to work in the world of "adult entertainment"

3. The Tee shirt in the picture is for a commercial "adult entertainment" website

4. The gesture of the hands around the GPS is commonly used to symbolise a ladies private areas.

Children visit this site on a regular basis, and we should not introduce them to these subliminal messages.

I think you need to get out more, and I don't mean the moors...

To be frank with you, this is a family website, and placing a picture of porn queen, with symbolism of a sexual nature, and a tee shirt which is aimed at Adult entertainment, is far from appropriate for here.

I'm sorry but this is Geocaching, we are not here to look at some scantly dressed female holding a GPS, if this is what GeoOlympix has to stoop to, to gain credibility, you have lost any you had. Not attending this event on the grounds of morals!

Absolutely, all we need is a picture of GPS technology, in this case a Garmin eTrex, and we all go weak at the knees.

I'm sorry my post has encouraged others to take this thread off-course. Apologies to anyone who, of their own free will, chose to use an Internet search engine to investigate further and didn't like what they discovered. It is however noted that the moral outrage has mostly come from the north west of the country and from past vocal opponents of the Geolympix. Far be it from me to suggest a political agenda... <_<

I'd remove the picture if I could but the post is now too old for me to edit. It was intended to be a light-hearted response to another cacher's request and I picked a shot which obscured the website address, but if people wanted to make a guess at it... To be frank, I'd not allow a child unsupervised access to the Internet as there's some shocking stuff out there, curiosity is clearly a powerful thing (my mistake was to include her name- professional force of habit) and the lady in question was 'fully covered' in a way many ladies in 'family friendly' newspapers aren't. To think, there was a time when the height of daring was the lingerie section of the Littlewoods catalogue.

Moote's Point 4 is news to me, which given my job... I feel mildly corrupted by his suggestion.

Back on topic, we're delighted to announce Diamond Farm as our primary campsite for the Geolympix. There's a second campsite close-by too, in case Diamond Farm fills up. To avoid a clash with Piratemania there's no dedicated Camping Event planned but there will be an evening meet at a nearby pub next to the canal instead, helping keep the event open to all. More information is being added to Geolympix.com today, so please take a look soon! :)

Just to be clear Paul, this is the first post in this thread from anyone with any connection to the North West Mega, so I really don't know where you got that idea from... I've stated before that there is a clear three weeks and several hundred miles between the two events, so I don't really see them as clashing. I wish you the best of luck with your event and I would hope that you would offer the same courtesy to us rather than dreaming up conspiracy theories. :anibad:

And while I was the first to voice my concerns on these forums, there has been considerable chatter on Facebook amongst cachers, many of whom are actually now wondering just how "family friendly" the event will be if you feel the need to use porn stars to advertise it.

Another cacher stated that they followed your Twitter feed on the geolympix and heard some gruesome tales of your "work" through it.

And yes, whilst I am from the north west, that's merely geography, I have nothing to do with the mega event or the committee!!

OH MY LORD, I am about to agree with Moote. :o For those that know me, will know that, that doesn't happen. I have just checked with my next door neighbour, who is deaf & dumb and can confirm that the position of the hands and symbol that she is making with the hands does signify a lady's private parts.

So Paul, please go ahead and feel 'mildly corrupted'. :(

Paul feel as corrupted as you want though I'd have to say that you're unbelievably naive bearing in mind your career.

You were the one who chose to take an image of a glamour star wearing a t-shirt with a web site name on it, doing an explicit sign language sign around a gps.

I may be wrong, but you appear to be the person scheduling your build up events to correspond to work and gala events to celebrate the seedier side of society. It does make me wonder whether your judgement has become blurred.

I do wonder whether there is even the slightest chance by way of gossip or chance remark, that people might attend the actual event on the off chance of you taking some actresses on the day. Or maybe you're considering taking some, not that large a step, as a special treat for your fans. Now I have no moral objection to people watching pornography or making it, I'm just a little worried when it becomes linked, in any way however small, to a family hobby and family events.

There's no agenda against you Paul, just a reaction to your bad judgement and a consideration as to whether you have done irrecovable damage to the event.

I'd like this thread to stay on topic please. I'd rather it wasn't hijacked by people keen to use my honest mistake of naming the lady (note to self: first names only!) as a stick not only to beat me with, but to speculate wildly and make unsubstantiated accusations about the event I'm involved in helping to organise. Sorry to disappoint them but the Geolympix will be a fully family friendly programme of Geocaching goodness. The Geolympix tweet feed has no 'gruesome tales of my "work"' on it (people are welcome to check for themselves) and I never suggested anyone 'having a pop' was involved in organising the NW Mega; I just made an observation about geography too

Some other observations: i) If you've a concern about a post, rather than advertise the issue ("kids, don't Google her!" - I'm not a parent, but I've an idea of human nature and this would be an invitation to kids to Google her), contact a mod. ii) The lady in question isn't deaf and I doubt she knows sign language any more than I do. Sometimes someone holding a GPS is just someone holding a GPS. iii) I'm happy to assure anyone fearful that I may bring a 'special friend' or two to the Geolympix with me, I won't be; I simply don't know any into caching. iv) I find the glee with which the boot is being put in pretty distasteful and more than a little ridiculous. Still, since there's no such thing as bad publicity perhaps I should start some really juicy side-event rumours? :)

November Geolympix News!

Two further Countdown events have been listed. Following events in Oxford, Berlin and London, November's will be on the waterfront in Manhattan. GC36ATZ - Countdown to the Geolympix #8 - New York from 7pm on Monday November 28th at the CBC Brewery in NYC.

After this the events return to the UK with Dorsetgal's GC375V9 - Countdown to the Geolympix #7 - Poole from 11am til 2pm on Saturday December 10th - The Quay, 21 The Quay, Poole, Dorset, BH15 1HJ.

Pre-Registration now stands at over 400 so we'll be approaching Groundspeak about listing the event both earlier than the usual 6 month guideline and as a Mega. Thank you to everyone who's been so supportive. We're really looking forward to welcoming you to the Geolympix, Oxford and to the UK in some cases :)

Camping: For those wishing to stay near Oxford for the weekend Geolympix programme, or the full week (Friday-Thursday) under canvas or in a caravan or campervan, we recommend the Diamond Farm Camping & Caravan Park, Islip Road, Bletchingdon, OX5 3DR. Please mention Geocaching or the Geolympix when booking to be put with the caching group. They have power points for both 'vans and tents, plus a bar, heated pool, childrens' play area, on-site shop and games room, etc. There are lots more sites near the Geolympix when Diamond Park gets full. Greenhill Leisure Park is close-by and there's a list of other sites on our website. To avoid Day Visitor Charges and other issues - including clashing with PirateMania V - the planned camping event will be relocated to a large near-by venue, with free access for all.

Don't forget, the Geolympix Lanyards are selling well, so if you'd like one of the first batch (white on red - future batches will be different) let us know. They're a mere £1 each, or £20 for 21 (20 to sell on at £1 each plus one for your trouble), or £100 for 106 (5 packs of 21 to sell on at £20 each, plus one for your trouble). They're soon to be joined on the Geolympix Shop page by some Solly-Approved caching tech, including watertight micro containers, Geolympix Torches, hand mirrors and tweezers for those pesky nanos and over-filled micros. A fresh batch of T-shirts is due soon too as the first two have sold out - thanks again to everyone who is helping make the Geolympix a success.

Geolympix Geocoins: A supplier has been selected and sample coins will be ordered shortly. We've also identified a potential supplier of the Geolympix Puzzle Trading Tokens so will have more news on these soon.

Please stay tuned for more information! Following us on Twitter - @Geolympix - or visiting the Geolympix website will also keep you informed.

Well, yes, I have a geolympix related question...

Not having seen all the pre-event chat (new to forum) and never having attended an event before, (let alone a mega event) can I ask what you do if you want to join in but probably don't want to stay over.

I like the idea of doing lots of caching that weekend (but really don't want to get competitive). Do I just turn up? Do I have to pay? Do I have to go round with a name badge (would rather not)? How can I plan my day(s) so that I can bag lots of caches but not get in to any races with anyone about finding more than other people or getting lots of FTF or anything...? I like the idea of the getting lots of different icons in one day but seriously do NOT want to get in to a race with anyone. Do I have to make sure I bring a bike or car?

No problem. The main Geolympix event in on Sunday July 22nd 2012 at the Oxford Town Hall right in the middle of town, from 11am 'til 4pm. Just turn up. There's a bigger programme of events on the same day, starting with GC32000 (not yet reviewed; it's too soon) which is a flashmob event in Banbury - about 20 miles north of Oxford - as that's where the nearest webcam cache is. It is on from 8am-8.15am, so might be of most interest to people doing the '11 Icons in 11 Hours' thing. There will also be a breakfast sit-down afterwards, but that's not an official part of the event.

I like the idea of doing lots of caching that weekend (but really don't want to get competitive). Do I just turn up? Do I have to pay?
Just turning up is fine. It would help if you posted a Will Attend log on the Geolympix cache page when it goes live (GC22T2T, also waiting for review) but either way, the event is free to attend. All the things we're doing to raise money - sales, raffle, etc - are totally optional.
Do I have to go round with a name badge (would rather not)?
No badge required- they're a good way for people to spot you in a crowd but totally optional.
How can I plan my day(s) so that I can bag lots of caches but not get in to any races with anyone about finding more than other people or getting lots of FTF or anything...?
There will be lots of caches in and around Oxford. Pick the ones you fancy and head off to look for them. It isn't about the numbers. We're planning the Geolympix as a celebration of caching, not a competitive event. That said, we will make sure there are some new caches for the FTF Hounds to scamper after. They get twitchy if they don't get fed ;)
I like the idea of the getting lots of different icons in one day but seriously do NOT want to get in to a race with anyone. Do I have to make sure I bring a bike or car?
There are/will be a Mega event, Virtuals, Trads, Multis, Wherigo, Puzzles and Letterbox caches at or within easy walking distance of the Geolympix venue, plus an Earthcache or two within Oxford; a bike would be handy for those unless you're happy with longer walks. The nearest Webcam is a drive away, coupled with a trad event. The CITO event in the evening will also need to be some distance away from Oxford to avoid Groundspeak's 'No Event Stacking' policy. So you could get 11 icons with powered transport, 8 with a bike or a longer walk and 7 within a couple of miles of Oxford city centre. Which sort of challenge you fancy is totally up to you. If you're coming to Oxford by public transport you may be able to get a lift to the satellite events if you ask for one on your Will Attend log, or get to them by bus - We'll add a travel timetable to the Geolympix site closer to the time.

Please keep the questions coming!

Wow, can I just say that if the time and effort you have gone in to in answering my question(s) so fully is in any small way indicative of how much trouble you're taking over the event itself, then it's sure to be one well-organised shindig!

This is a very sincere thank you for both answering all my questions so carefully and not making it seem like they were silly questions (or just fobbing me off with a "go and look at the web site").

P.S. I LOVE the idea of getting 11 icons in one day, after all, how often is that achievable? But do wonder how I'm going to get a screen shot of me on the web-cam, given that I don't have mobile internet access and my geocaching friend will almost certainly have be persuaded to come to the event too, so won't be home in front of a PC to take a screen shot for me. Will there be some sort of "centrally available screen-shot" for that one?

NYC for GC36ATZ - Countdown to the Geolympix #8 - New York was great fun, but it's back to Blighty with a bang for Dorsetgal & Geodog's GC375V9 - Countdown to the Geolympix #7 - Poole in Dorset tomorrow. It's on from 11am til 2pm on Saturday December 10th at The Quay, 21 The Quay, Poole, Dorset, BH15 1HJ. A lovely spot overlooking the sea. If you're in the area we'd love to see you. Will this be the day we break the magic 500 pre-registations? We'll have Geolympix Keyrings to give away and Lanyards and other goodies for sale. It's almost Christmas. Treat yourself! :D

Latest Geolympix news:

GC3B109 - Countdown to the Geolympix #6 - Oxford Mk2 is back where it all began in September 2010, at the Longwall in Oxford, on January 31st from 7pm. And yes, the parking is free. We'll have lanyards and other Geolympix products, being sold to support this not-for-profit Mega event, plus freebies, Geolympix Geoff (our mascot), info on the event and more. If you're in the area we'd love you to join us.

The Geolympix Goodies range has expanded, with £10 Geolympix head torches (3w luxion - handpicked by Drsolly himself) joining great 'caching mirrors, handy £2 tweezers, walking poles and small (£2) and large (£3) Bison-tube-type cache containers - these will all be added to the Geolympix web site Shop page by the weekend, along with some other planned products - Coins included!

Pre-registration stands at over 550 and will end when the Geocaching.com Geolympix cache page goes live on January 22nd - a huge thank you to everyone who showed their support, helped with our planning and gave us extra leverage with Groundspeak. Without knowing there's a lot of enthusiasm for the event we couldn't have gone ahead with it, so it's really appreciated that so many people have offered both their interest and their support.

Be a Geolympix Champion! With the closing of the pre-reg scheme, we'll be launching a programme for cachers to get the most out of the Geolympix, with ideas of how to help promote the Summer Festival of Caching in Oxford, details of the Cache of Dreams and other prizes, adding to the Geolympix event programme and some exciting news from Groundspeak...

Further news on the Marathon Caching Series (26 miles, 5 rings, 200 caches?), the D/T Grid caches (1 of every 81 D/T ratings within 10 miles/16Km of the Geolympix) and cycling and boating series will follow soon, along with info on the satellite events we have planned - including the Trad (webcam-flash flash-mob) and CITO, helping make the '11 icons in 11 hours' challenge possible. The camping event (now an off-site gathering), GeoDog and others will also follow between now and Sunday July 22nd, when we hope to welcome you to the beautiful surroundings of Oxford Town Hall for a wonderful day - and week - of geocaching fun!

Can't promise that we can attend, but will do our best. As I've said to Paul, Piratemania comes first (if funds allow), but we see no reason why we can't do both. Originally, the intention was to take the week off work and spend it attending as many Geolympix events as we could, however, life has got in the way (I have been forced to take the following 2 weeks off).

Also particularly when it comes to events that people are spending small fortunes of their own money, time and effort, if you haven't got anything nice to say, then say nothing.

We both wish Paul, Dr Solly and the whole team, the best wishes and really hope this event is as successful as the effort they are putting into it.

Latest Geolympix news:

GC3CB46 - Countdown to the Geolympix #5 - Bristol has been reviewed and approved in double-quick time by Lindinis; thank you. It's on at The Lamb & Flag, Cribbs Causeway, outside of Bristol (easy to get to from all directions thanks to the motorways) on Monday February 27th, from 7pm. Lots of free parking and there's a Harvester on site too. We'll have lanyards and other Geolympix products, being sold to support this not-for-profit Mega event, plus freebies, Geolympix Geoff (our mascot), info on the event and more. If you're in the area or passing through on your way home, it'd be great if you could join us. Details of the roadshow event in Edindburgh on March the 7th will follow.

The 11in11 Challenge - never before attempted in the UK, as far as we can tell - continues to draw interest with the news that outforthehunt has agreed to bring YOSM (Ye Ole Survey Monuments - an unusual, historic moving Virtual cache) to Oxford for the Geolympix, meaning locals who've cleared out all near-by Virtuals will still be able to get 11 icons in 11 hours. Other Geolympix challenges include completing your D/T Grid in the Oxford area.

Further news: Sustrans, the National Cycle Network people, have approved a Geolympix cycle series to be set close to Oxford, forming a part of the Challenges associated with the event. These will be kept operational after the event as a part of the Geolympix legacy, hopefully making Oxford a prime target for any cacher looking for a variety of caching experiences, from the 26 mile Marathon series to caches requiring a boat (or punt) along the Thames in Oxford to find them.

Geolympix Guests of Honour Alan g (the UK's longest serving active cacher), drsolly (the UK's leading cache finder by numbers), Dan & Pid (stars of Inside Out, the BBC TV programme which introduced many to caching, have agreed to come out of retirement to attend), plus fellow Inside Out stars - and T&J Bear specialists! - Tim and June have all said they'll be there. More guests (but not the surprise ones!) to be announced. We're also specifically inviting all Reviewers and Forum Moda to attend. Your public want to meet you! (In a good way :))

Plans for the GeoDog, CITO (7pm, Sunday July 22nd, after the Geolympix. Groundspeak's event Stacking rule has been explained by a very helpful La Lunatica and won't apply), Marathon hub and other events are preceding well and details of these should be announced soon.

Can anyone from the Geolympics team tell me if there are any specific plans in place to add a local Wherigo somewhere between Banbury and Oxford for the 11 icons challenge?

I've been doing a bit of research and the nearest Wherigo to Banbury (which itself is 22 miles North of Oxford) is a further 27 miles North West. (For those who haven't seen it, Banbury is the venue for the flash mob and the web cam icons). The nearest two Wherigos to Oxford Town Hall, (for those not in the know; that's the Mega Venue) are Newbury direction (South & South East) at 24 miles in the opposite direction.

As those of us going for the 11 icon challenge will be making that trip, it would make planning and costing the trip a lot more straightforward if there is one!

Mind you, I appreciate that this IS designed to be a challenge, so I can completely understand that we shouldn't be asking for things on a plate. After all, what is a challenge if you don't have to work for it?

But given that the finding of the cache is the actual challenge, and the actual driving the nearly 100 mile round-trip to get those 3 icons isn't so much a challenge, rather an expensive (and possibly, one might argue, an environmentally questionable) choice, it could make the day so much greener and less expensive if a local cacher could be persuaded to design a Wherigo somewhere in between. From a "green travel" perspective, I realise that buses and trains are a better alternative, but Sunday services are notoriously infrequent with both.

Just a thought and I would completely understand if you don't want to make it too easy!

I have a Wherigo not too far from Oxford (in Marlow) but really it's out the other way from the Webcam and driving doesn’t make a challenge. There is a plan for two different Wherigos to be placed by me in or around Oxford. These aren't specifically for the Geolympix as they will not be short term and expected to go live long before the event. A much more local cacher than I is going to maintain the physical cache and I will maintain the virtual element on their behalf.

Of the two, one will be trail in the city centre and the second will be a game in the countryside.

I'm not a fan of setting caches specifically for stats but I'd have thought you'd want a Wherigo to be a pretty simple one to allow plenty of time for the rest of the day's activities ;)

Now where would the challenge be? Don't want it too simple. I believe it should be a cache for it's own right. The trail in the centre will be a multi-like trail with large zones to make it more likely to not fail but the output still wants to be rewarding.

As for the one in the countryside, I don't want it to be complicated or a long walk,I just hope it will hold interest that people will want to play and not just get the icon.

Latest Geolympix news:

GC39RWF - Countdown to the Geolympix #5 - Edinburgh is on shortly. It's at Maggie Dickson's Pub, 92 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2JR - a historic pub with a colourful history just below the castle, to its south side - on Wednesday March 7th, from 6.30pm. We'll have lanyards and other Geolympix products, being sold to support this not-for-profit Mega event, plus freebies, Geolympix Geoff (our mascot), info on the event and more. If you're in the area we'd love to meet you. Details of the next roadshow event, #3 in April, will follow shortly.

Confirmed! We're very pleased to welcome Geotees, The GAGB, GeoCoinShop.de and GPS-Training to the Geolympix, with BaseOfTree.com penciled in too. There will also be a Geolympix stand with goodies and other stands are to be announced. Graculus is expected to join us, and we're hoping several other Reviewers will attend in their official capacity. Incognito ones, off duty and free to mingle, are welcome too of course! :)

Welcome to the Geolympix Team, Go Catch from Oxford and Hefron, who's helping with the Marathon Series planning. They join metal bijou, Dorsetgal and Geodog, goldpot, drsolly, Lord of the Cachers, Purple_Pineapple and me, Simply Paul.

Other news: We're now taking orders for the Geolympix Geocoins as funding for them is in place! Please take a look at the Geolympix site for further details.

Around 255 cachers have already logged a Will Attend, with well over 4 1/2 months left to go, which is brilliant! As a reminded to all the people who registered their interest in the event by pre-registering, please log a Will Attend too if you're still planning to join us for a great day (or week) caching in and around Oxford. Thanks. Also, tell your friends!

The Geolympix GeoDog event is set for Saturday July 21st at one of Oxford's many parks - probably Shootover Park. We're just awaiting conformation from Oxford City Council on this. We also have a good proposed site for the CITO event on the evening of the Geolympix, a Pub Quiz night planned, a possible location for the Night Cache event (with an unusual twist) and a clear target for the Marathon event and series. Exciting times at Geolympix HQ.

Further news coming soon!

As with all our roadshow events, there will be a chance to pick up some Geolympix freebies, goodies, info and enthusiasm. Details of the next roadshow event, #2 in May, will follow shortly.

As a bonus, there is also my GC3ENM9 - Night of the Living Egg not far away on the evening of Easter Saturday - April 7th. It's a night cache meet with an optional Easter Egg Hunt, with a difference...

337-ish cachers across 188 logs have logged their plans to attend but with 561 pre-reg's we know there are lots more people to come. If you're planning to attend but haven't yet posted a Will Attend, please do so. If you're not planning to come, please let us know what we can do to change your mind!

The current event plan:

Friday July 21st - Pub Quiz Night (location TBC)

Sunday July 23rd - WebcamFlash FlashMob, Geolympix and evening CITO events

Monday July 24th - Marathon series walk and event.

Tuesday July 25th - Night Caching event (location TBC)

Wednesday July 26th - Further event/s to be announced.

Attempting the 11 Icons in 11 Hours challenge? More good news: Wherigos are planned for Oxford & Sustrans have OK'd a series along their Route 57 between Thame & Princes Risborough - The Phoenix Trail. It's on a disused railway line; nice and flat! The caches will also help towards anyone hoping to complete their D/T grid as they won't all be quick and easy 'cycle-by' caches.

With just a third of a year to go, anticipation's building as our plans come together beautifully. The Geolympix team look forward to welcoming you to Oxford & the Geolympix. Are you ready to make some wonderful caching memories?

Thanks to Lassitude we've an extra 13 Tim and June bears for our Bearfest and lastly, congratulations to Geolympix team member(s!) Dorsetgal and Geodog, who's been picked to be an Olympic Torch Bearer for a second time!

May update: 69 days to go!

We've received the following exciting news from Groundspeak: "If your event reaches 500 will attend logs, we will make the event a Mega in advance." - So please get those Will Attend logs in on the Geolympix event page and let's seal the Mega deal!

Upcoming Countdown to the Geolympix events: Later this month we have GC3K4GV - Countdown to the Geolympix #2 - Banbury at The Inn, Greatworth, Banbury, Oxon, OX17 2DT from 6pm on Sunday May 27th and then GC3K4G9 - Countdown to the Geolympix #1 - Exeter at The Cat and Fiddle, Clyst St Mary, Nr Exeter, Devon EX5 1DP from 6pm on Friday June 15th.

Geocoin, Pathtag and Geolympix Puzzle Tokens (PuzTokx) are pre-selling well and final negotiations over satellite event venues are being made. The D/T Grid-filling plans are coming together, with the help of local cachers, and the 26 mile Geolympix Marathon Series is back on track. The 11 Icons in 11 Hours Geolympix Challenge remains the feature drawing the most interest, with two 'test' Wherigos placed out of town by metal bijou, who is also working on a couple much closer to Oxford itself; ideal for the 11in11 challenge. A new EarthCache or two are also planned, along with fresh trads, puzzles, multis, letterboxes and a passing visit by moving Virtual Ye Ole Survey Monuments.
