Wherigo Player does not run on my pocket PC

The Wherigo player always crashes on my Pocket PC right after starting. I cannot even click any button.

I use a navigation system based on Windows CE 5.0. I installed the Wherigo version for pocket PC from April/2008. .Net 2.0 is correctly installed.

After starting, it shows the splash screen, it connects succesfully to the GPS, displays 2 buttons for my cartridges and a menu. In the next moment, it crashes with "Out of memory exception". I checked it: 50 % of the memory was still free.

For a test, I removed all cartridges from the folder. Then it displayed "No cartridges found in <foldername>". I clicked OK, but it immediately redisplayed the same text, over and over again, till it again crashed with "Out of Memory exception".

I believe there's a bug in the software, not a lack of memory in my Pocket PC, I found other people on the web that faced the same problem.

1. Anyone an idea?

2. I heard there exists an earlier version of the player, can anyone point me to a link where I can download it? (Maybe it works better)

3. Why has this software not been updated since 2008? Are there any plans to do this, or do exist alternatives for pocket PC? If not, this would be a pity! I have no Iphone or android handy!

1) I don't have an idea at this time. I haven't fiddled with that version of the Player since it was released in 2008.

2) I maintain an archive of previous versions of both the Builder and Player. It can be found at: http://devfolio.com/geocaching/Wherigo/archive

3) Groundspeak has not updated anything concerning Wherigo since May 2008 (save for bug fixes to the site). Originally, this was because they were busy getting the new version of the geocaching site (using .Net 2) up and running. Later, it was because the original developer left. Still later, it was because their focus was elsewhere. I have suggested it would be beneficial to release the Player code as open source so our third-party developers can learn from it and make sure their Player applications implement the same features. There was some interest, but that is all. I know from personal experience from my conversation in early June that Groundspeak was interested in resuming development. Since that time, I have not heard or seen anything yet. I haven't contacted Groundspeak since then because I have been working on things of my own. I will pursue the matter again when my geocache logs come close to the current date (i.e. I catch up on my own work).

The only other alternative I know is with a Java-enabled cell phone.
