+releasethedogs Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 We all know that D/T starts at one star and then increases half a star up till 5. I have always wondered why there is no half star D/T. Any one know? Quote
+TerraViators Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I believe a 1/1 is generally considered to be the easiest possible rating. Quote
knowschad Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 They used to have 0.5 D & T, but it was lost in a rounding error. Quote
+Redfist Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 1.0 T means that a wheelchair can access it. What would 0.5 mean? You can access it through your car window like a drive through? Quote
knowschad Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 1.0 T means that a wheelchair can access it. What would 0.5 mean? You can access it through your car window like a drive through? I think 0.5 T would be more like the drive-up banking things that get delivered right to your car via pneumatic tubes. Come to think of it... that would be a cool cache, wouldn't it? Quote
+BaylorGrad Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 1.0 T means that a wheelchair can access it. What would 0.5 mean? You can access it through your car window like a drive through? Actually, that's not a bad idea. That would apply to many virtuals and LPCs! Quote

Actually have done one of a series like that. They were called 'Lazy Person' cache or something like that. And yes I didn't have to leave the geo-cruiser to retrieve the cache. Quote
+briansnat Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 1 means it's the easiest of the easiest. Not sure what a .05 would mean since you can't get easier than a 1 Quote
knowschad Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 1 means it's the easiest of the easiest. Not sure what a .05 would mean since you can't get easier than a 1 Well, obviously, 0.5 would have to be redefined as the easiest, and 1.0 just a little bit harder. But why 0.5 degree steps anyway? Lets get even more granular and use 0.1 steps? Quote

+releasethedogs Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 I am not saying they should add one, I am asking why there was not one in the first place. Quote
+FraenCache Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Maybe it´s for a psychological reason. Things should start with a full number. I wouldn´t want to leave the house to make a half thing ... Quote
+addisonbr Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I am not saying they should add one, I am asking why there was not one in the first place. When you start ratings using only whole numbers, you establish that the limits are 1 and 5 and that 1/1 is the easiest possible cache. When you later introduce 1/2 points, there is no compelling reason to exceed those boundaries just because you are working with a new level of granularity... especially since you'd have then to regrade scads of "easiest possible caches" with new ratings to bring them into sync. +releasethedogs Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 then why have half star ratings anyways, why not just go up to ten. 1-10 stars instead of 1-5 stars with halfs? Quote
+cx1 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 then why have half star ratings anyways, why not just go up to ten. 1-10 stars instead of 1-5 stars with halfs? Because at the time of development they had no idea the activity would grow into what it is today? Quote
+addisonbr Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 then why have half star ratings anyways, why not just go up to ten. 1-10 stars instead of 1-5 stars with halfs? Because cachers started with five stars, back before geocaching.com even existed. It seemed like enough. Perhaps they got it wrong. But in the early days people used to bury containers and leave food as swag, too. Later cachers wanted more granularity, so halfs were added. It seemed like a good way to increase precision without having to rescore every cache in the world. It seems to be a solution that works for most people. Quote
+wimseyguy Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 I am not saying they should add one, I am asking why there was not one in the first place. Because the abacus used to make the calculations didn't have any half beads on it. Quote
+secretagentbill Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 In Soviet Russia, 0.5/0.5 cache find you. Quote
+docsigma Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 When you arrive at GZ for a .5/.5 cache, the cache springs to life and screams "HELLO, I AM A GEOCACHE! THANKS FOR FINDING ME!" It then signs its logbook for you and posts a "TFTC" log for you automatically. Quote
+FraenCache Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Also, I think, a graphic of a row of 10 full stars would look odd and would be very difficult to read right at one glimpse. Fife stars with halfes are better and faster to understand. Quote
+SeekerOfTheWay Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 It's bad enough I have DNF'd 1 difficulty caches. Don't make me DNF .5! I can't take the humiliation! Quote
