FolsomNatural
I was wondering if creating a cache with packets of bird seed inside is a good idea, bad, stupid, idealistic, or what. I know a good bird watching location, and I figure I can put small, double-wrapped plastic bags of bird seed in as SWAG. I know food is illegal and vermin might be a problem, but with the right container type and double-bagging maybe it would work. I figure it's good for the environment, and gives people something positive to do for wildlife. Then again, I don't want to cause any problems. You opinion? Quote Link to comment
Warturtle
I don't know what to say about rodents and animals. What I WILL tell you is two things: 1. Make sure the birds in the area like the kind of food you will put out. If it's ducks and finches, don't put out millet. 2. Don't put out Nyger at all. It goes bad pretty quick, especially in heat. +Gitchee-Gummee
I'll tell you something else.... Seed of ANY kind goes moldy with very little water. If left in a typical cache for a month or so, it is gonna stink to high heaven. Bag it all you want, but plastic bags in geocaches really don't seem to help when they lay in the bottom for that period of time. They are short storage use items -- not worthy of an uncontrolled environment. Aside from that, it is still considered as food. You call it illegal, we call it against the guidelines. Don't put it in a cache... please. Quote Link to comment
va griz
If you decide to do it, I would suggest a steel container. I've had mice and squirrels eat through sturdy plastic containers to get bird food and sunflower seeds. Quote Link to comment
FolsomNatural
Thanks for all your collective wisdom. I'm tending to think it might be a good idea, but would not work for practical reasons, the most obvious of which is the vermin factor. Thanks. (Yet ANOTHER great idea that I will refer to as: "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.") Quote Link to comment
Panther&Pine
Use a bear proof container if you do, since the bears (I assume you do actually live in Utah) will take the whole darn thing with them to try and get to the bird seed. In Durango you can be cited for not taking your bird feeders in during bear season. Quote Link to comment
