Hiding Geocaches

How do I hide a geocache?

Before considering your first geocache hide, we suggest that you find a variety of caches in your area. Seeing caches in a variety of locations, in different containers and hidden by a variety of users will help you understand what makes a great cache hide. This makes it more likely that you too will hide an interesting cache that everyone will enjoy!

As you prepare to place your cache, review our Guide to Hiding a Cache and the Geocache Listing Guidelines. It is important that you understand these guidelines before submitting a cache for review.

Hello

Our friend got us started looking for geos a few months back.

Now we are curious about the process of placing a new geo for others to find.

How do we register it ... Tips? Links?

Thanks, sand_people in Nevada

Before you embark on cache ownership keep in mind that it's a long term commitment and requires some investment, including monetary investment.

First off you should invest in a good watertight container. The most popular choices are Lock and Lock containers and Ammo cans. You may have already encountered these already. Use real Lock and Locks, not the dollar store knock offs. The dollar store knock offs are not water tight, and the tabs break off usually within 3 months.

You will also need to use a dedicated GPS unit to get accurate averaged coordinates. You will upset cachers if you post fuzzy coordinates that are over 30 feet away from ground zero. Do not use online mapping services (google maps, yahoo maps, bing, google earth, etc.). Do not use the GPS app on your cell phone (they are fine for finding caches, not accurate enough for hiding caches).

You will be expected to respond to problems with your cache (full logbook, wet logbook, cracked container, muggled cache, etc.) as soon as possible, usually within a month. You are also expected to maintain your cache listing - disable the cache when necessary, post notes when necessary, post Owner Maintenance logs when required.

Try to do your best to impress people with your first hide. Plant in a nice location, plant a swag size cache (micro caches please a sub-group of cachers - those that don't care about swag, larger caches please everyone - those who care about swag and those who don't.

Read the guidelines and if you feel comfortable with the responsibility and commitment, welcome to cache ownership - may you get great feedback in your visitor logs.

Excellent advice. Are you listening? Being a cache owner means responsibility. You got a DNF? What's going on? TWO DNF's? Better go down and check it out. The rewards are bountiful. Great logs, sometimes accompanied by great photos, are what it's all about. And someone giving the cache a fovourite point.....heaven. Good luck and have fun!

+1!!!

Be sure to read the guidelines link to guidelines

This is very important or you will just be back here asking us why your cache did not get published.

Please find a number of caches first.

This way you will have a good idea of what makes a good hide. Also you will be sure you will be in the game for a while. Hiding a cache is a commitment. It takes maintenance. Please be sure you are willing to do this for a while, perhaps years.

Please be sure to
