+burtsbodgers Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi All At long last i have been able to take the plunge and get a new phone, a LG Optimus running Android. I have an Oregon 300 which is great, but this new addition will hopefully help on holidays and on the fly caching expeditions. It has a built in GPS. So the question is... What do i need in the way of apps, preferably free (times are hard)to help with caching. which to display Memory maps which to hold and show GPX pocket queries and which to do the paperless bit off line. All help will be much appreciated. And as for the Android section of the forums what is that all about! there is nowhere to ask a question, so i thought the UK bit is best as i am here. Quote

+drdick&vick Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 C:Geo for caching 'I don't use it as on online tool as I also have the Official app so only use it to store extra PQ's above my Oregon capacity', Geocaching Buddy for Multi's and Locus free for OS mapping. Quote
+Edmondo Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I use c:geo and Locus Pro. I think they are a nice combo. Locus Pro is about 4,-€ but there's a free version, too. Quote
+Matrix Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Columbus is another good free app Market Link Quote
+Hawkins2.5 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 geocache caclculator will help with puzzles and with working out multis I have heard this app mentioned quite a few times so thought I'd download it to see what it's all about. I have no idea where to start with it though and can't find any kind of 'user guide'. Does anybody have any advice on using the app or know where I might find a guide? Quote
Ragamuffinryan Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I use GeoBeagle. And that is all, not sure i needed anything else. Its a free app and does everything i need of it (: Quote
+Stuey Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 c:geo is not going to be developed any further, so when it stops working the next time the geocaching.com site changes, that's your lot. End of. Quote

+Afterburned Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I use cachemate, works fully offline so you have to fill it with caches first, but does not use your data allowance. Quote

+Edmondo Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 There's c:geo opensource now and it works just fine. Has great new features by the way. Quote
+talkytoaster Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 H, Hi All At long last i have been able to take the plunge and get a new phone, a LG Optimus running Android. All help will be much appreciated. And as for the Android section of the forums what is that all about! there is nowhere to ask a question, so i thought the UK bit is best as i am here. I use the following: 1. GDAK (for accessing my GSAK databases on my Android Phone). FREE 2. LocusPro (for online/offline maps and handling GPX files for caching, navigating to cache, reading logs, etc). Around £4 to purchase the Pro version, the non-Pro version is FREE but limited. It can do Field Notes. 3. Geocaching App from GC.COM. I use this least, but it can be handy if all else fails. I find it very buggy. It can do Field Notes. 4. CacheMate. I have used this in the past, but now tend to use GDAK as I find it more useful and I don't have to convert the database files at all. CacheMate is around £4 to buy. I've also used GeoBeagle and GeoHunter (a GeoBeagle fork), both were FREE and pretty good. I also use WhereYouGo for Where-I-Go cartridges as a backup to my Oregon 200. I still use my Oregon 200 as my main caching tool, however my Android Phone is a Motorola Defy and it is pretty rugged and about as water-resistant as my Oregon and I have 3 batteries for it. +rutson Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I'm finding NeonGeo to be very impressive. http://www.neongeo.com/ Quote
+Tyros Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I can recommend GDAK (free). It can hold a complete copy of my GSAK databases, including all images, logs, and even the spoilers. As for navigating to the cache, use a real GPS since you already have one. Smartphones (except Motorola Defy) are to fragile. Quote
+drdick&vick Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Have a look at Cachehound, it's a relatively new app but works very well. I have managed to load all of Devon and Cornwall on a 1:25000 OS map (used with RMaps)to my phone that will work off line, so with the ability of Cachehound to take .gpx files it is worth a look. NOT a free app though. Quote
jadenrich2101 Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 c:geo opensource is the new one taken over by a new developer....hes very good at what he does and is straight on the ball when Groundspeak change something on the website.... C:geo has never let me down and has a great compass or radar to use and i can normally get within 3ft to a cache (without tree cover) Quote
+drdick&vick Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 I'm finding NeonGeo to be very impressive. http://www.neongeo.com/ Had a look at this one and it seems quite good except that I can't seem to find a way to input a 'Next Stage' for multis. Maybe it is just me. The amount of apps I have now, I think it is time to write a report on each one. Quote

+Guanajuato Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Another one to throw into the mix is Trekbuddy. Excellent for caching out of mobile coverage as everything (caches, maps, notes etc) is stored on your phone. Mobile Atlas Creator is a necessary desktop companion for it. The latest version has removed the ability to use OS maps, at the request of the OS. Bit of a pain. The GCtour greasemonkey add-on is also very useful. Quote
