Offensive Caching nicknames

Recommended Posts

I would be totally offended if I found out somebodys caching name was an abrevation for cursing.
Now who would do such a terrible thing?

Well at least it finally let me change it to my new handle I have been trying to go by. I guess they took the "change your name only once" restiction off.

As knowschad already knows (hence his name), I picked my handle when I was pretty young (over 15 years ago), and I have been using it on the net since then. Im older now and want to go by this name. EhFahQ was funny back then. Now its "meh". I decided this after xbox live made me change it.

A few years ago there was a cacher using the name Muggle Fugger. Its not offensive to me, but I immediately thought that someone would have a fit over it and it would be changed, but that never happened. They did seem to just stop caching, though.

Fug, thats a good one. It was what I used when I was a kid to keep from getting slapped by an adult when I wanted to express grievous dismay. Now so many people take issue with it, funny thing is very few from my parents generation do.

When does adding to the list stop? When we cant even say hello because some dude started calling his stuff a hello and it caught on? My wife gets ticked off when she hears "junk in the trunk" because it is a lot more sexual when we used it than the current kiddies intend and yes I lecture her.

The key is not for you to offend less, it is to let less offend you. Start with individual words and work up to larger concepts.

There is not a single word that George Carlin ever uttered that I could take as offensive. Strings of words are a different story.

Kids. Nah, they never use inappropriate words. Not correctly, anyhow. You have to teach them which words to be offended by.

A 6 year old and a 4 year old are upstairs in their bedroom.

The 6 year old says "You know what? I think it's about time we started cussing."

The 4 year old nods his head in approval.

The 6 year old continues "When we go downstairs for breakfast, I'm gonna say something with 'hell' and you say something with 'a**'".

The 4 year old agrees with enthusiasm.

When their mother walks into the kitchen and asks the 6 year old what he wants for breakfast, he replies "Aw, hell, Mom, I guess I'll have some Cheerios".

WHACK! He flies out of his chair, tumbles across the kitchen floor, gets up,and runs upstairs crying his eyes out, with his mother in hot pursuit, slapping his rear with every step.

His mom shut him in his room and shouts, "You can stay there until I let you out!"

She then comes back downstairs, looks at the 4 year old and asks with a stern voice "And what do YOU want for breakfast, young man?"

"I don't know," he blubbers "but you can bet your a** it won't be Cheerios!"

I'll simpley ask for peoples opinion on their thoughts aboutthe use of swear words or crude words in one's geocaching nickname.

no, they shouldn't exist and i am quite shocked that GC has not created a list of non-acceptable user names, much like the words that get censored here in the forums

As long as they don't censor offensive avatars, right?

you're kidding right? what exactly is offensive about it, or is it personal?

i can dig up half naked women in avatars that i have seen here, that is not offensive?

And half naked guys

What could possibly be offensive about peeing on an APPLE? It's possible that avatar might deserve an award.........

WARNING!!! Here is the name in question. Click the link only if you're not super sensitive.

This, to me, is a name that I'd agree probably needs to be changed. Not to keep from offending someone necessarily, but once you define a site like this as "family friendly" there's reasonable lines that shouldn't be crossed.

I really don't think that seeing this name is going to hurt anyone, or scar them for life. So I linked to it with a warning so folks that were curious would know what is being discussed. But I wouldn't want to allow kids on a site that allowed a lot of similar type cacher names.

That's a hard line to define for sure, what should be allowed and what shouldn't.

I've seen alot of people spell words wrong, even on purpose. If that name is offensive then you must not get out much at all, lol. There's a great old rock tune called, "Cum on Feel the Noise" and there's also the classic, "Come on Eileen" tune too. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned them as they might go the "Money for Nothing" route and get taken off the radio now.

I get offended by stuff, lots of stuff, but do I make it my mission to let the whole world know? Nah....I just turn the channel or station or ignore it, etc.

Everyone wants their turn in the spotlight I guess.

I find it funny that some people burned some book at a protest today because the title was offensive, lol. As long as they paid for the book, I'm sure the author doesn't give a dadgum what they did with it. Probably loved the publicity too. Funny thing too, it was named after a historical document.

I can recall that there were a few people that were offended by someone using this avatar:

a663d30f-221f-4592-a202-f83bb5cbeb1c.jpg

which is a bit odd.

Oddly creepy but not offensive.

I think it was the posts that appeared to the right of that image that were offensive. We just associate that image with those. Hmm, isn't that what an avatar is all about anyway?

I'm glad to see that you have matured and added the Mr. to the moniker. ;)

I used to be an online gamer -- Dark Age of Camelot -- and they had some pretty outrageous names for toons in that game. However, they DID have some standards. I remember one person who had a name that blatantly glorified pedophilia. THAT name was squelched as were a few others I can remember.

There's much to be said against "lack of tolerance" but there are certain things I just can't condone. </shrug> Folks will never agree on this sort of subject so I generally don't get my panties in a bunch over stuff like this. I have MY standards and I stick to them. The opinions and standards of others is beyond my control.

Somewhere in my memory from a few years ago there was an issue with a user name that went around the forums for a while. If I remember GS tried to get him to change it and he wouldn't do it. I don't remember if he finally changed it or got banned or what. The name started with Up. Somebody with more memory cells can probably remember more about it.

Wow, so any username that offends just one person has to be changed?

There are many names and words in one part of the world that are ok (if not common) while else where they are considered rude, crude and not accepted in "polite society". The problem with words is that I could say something and mean one thing while another person will understand it to mean something else. I don't believe there is a way to protect everyone from "bad words", concepts, ideas or simple misunderstandings. At the same time there are those that go out of there way to be as offensive as possible to as many people as they can. So to have one rule that works in all cases won't happen.

Slang can take a very "clean" word and make it a very "dirty" word. I personally believe that there's no such as a topic or word that is off limits in the correct setting or correct usage. If a person or business owns and controls a place or an environment, they have the right to create any and all rules for the area as long as it conforms with local laws and customs. Since Groundspeak owns and runs this group of web sites, they have final say on what is allowed and what is not. Since they allow feedback, if someone finds something "Offensive" they can either contact Groundspeak and voice their concerns, which should include why the term, word or phrase is offensive OR ignore it and move on.

Everyone has the right to be an idiot, but at the same time everyone has the right to ignore the idiots of the world (if possible). In Groundspeak's case, they can choose to ignore them, make them change, or delete their account. As a player, I choose to refer them as idiots and ignore them.

This almost hit too hard to home. I thought the OP was PathFinderFun (A local geocacher who's cache was the most recent one I found.)

There is a local cacher who has a curse in there name, and funny enough? They are a team! I had to do a double take when I realized it was a different pathfinder, and it was a different group of cachers. But they've been caching for about a year now and don't want to step on any local cachers toes.

So, what about offensive cache names then? Or rather, caches near villages with offensive names?

Didn't that cache get a thread shut down once?

and why would they do that?....it is what it is and this is a global game, some words in other languages can sound like a curse word in english....should those countries be banned from caching?

but why not start with "offending" city names in USA?

It was probably the conversations that followed, and not the cache itself. But honestly... look at the cache page. Sure, its a play on words, but the play is obviously emphasizing the English meaning of the name.

In answer to your final question: without a doubt! They should change the name of the town to "Makingwhoopie" or some such thing.

That cache page is not offensive to the majority of Germans, so there really is no problem, unless someone provides a link to a bunch of people in english speaking countries...

I think knowschad already visited that one...

While I find the example username rather questionable (what ARE they trying to prove, anyway), I don't think it's particularly offensive per se.

I use 'factory language' all the time in the proper context, but I do know enough to cool it when applying for a bank loan.

EDITED for excessive use of brackets...

Hey, does anyone still have the greasemonkey script loaded that puts a shirt on his avatar? I remember someone bumped a thread a couple months ago that he posted to, and it still worked for me. Did not however, work when it was posted in the body of a post here.

Interesting. Seems like a bad precedent to set. And they "will change the names for them"? What are they going to change it to "Pottymouthed User"?

I sure do! It's disabled since he's not posting any more (at least not where I could see it), but it's still there. Not sure if it still would work though, I think that was from pre-forum-upgrade times.

I still have it, too. I also have one that changes a dragon to a cute little mouse.

Oh I haven't seen that one posting for a long time either. Did I put them on my ever growing ignore list? I didn't think so... But who the hell (am I allowed to say that?) knows...

Wow, you sure read a lot into my post don't you?

For the record, the name didn't offend ME in the slightest. However, I can see that it probably doesn't fit in here with the "family friendly" web site that we all enjoy. Names of rock music songs that have the same word in them, on the other hand, fit in just fine with the rock music world, where things are very seldom described as "family friendly".

There's a time and place for everything, and this game isn't the place for that cacher name.

But like I said, there's a very difficult line to define there. What is acceptable and what is not? I'd think you'd even agree that there are some super offensive words that shouldn't be used. Right?

Or is there no word at all that you think shouldn't belong in a cacher's name?
