HeadHardHat Needs Your GPSr Opinion

Recommended Posts

Greeting All,

HeadHardHat here. Right off the bat I need your insights with the GPSr units you currently own or have seen in the wild. We are going to be doing a Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) episode of the Good, Better and Best GPSr units out there so if you would be so kind could you give us your insights? We will tally all the data and give it back to you on the show and on my blog. Please answer the following questions:

Note if you use a phone include the phone make and app used.

What GPSr Make and Model do you use?

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr?

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best?

What is the worst thing about your GPSr?

And finally

If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next?

Thanks so much for helping us out. We tape two episodes of Geocaching World every Monday at 6:30pm EST #LIVE through RVNN.tv. See you there!

What GPSr Make and Model do you use?: Garmin GPSMAP 62s

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr?: 8

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best?: The durability is excellent; but most of all the 'pages' feature allows you to navigate and customize the menus

What is the worst thing about your GPSr?: Its not a knock against the unit, more the Garmin notion of additional map purchases and licenses. Essentially if you purchase a map for your unit it is not transferable if you hapen to purchase a new unit. (Format: Download and DVD) If you purchase the Micro SD format you may transfer them between compatible devices, however you have to keep track of those little guys.

And finally, If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next?: To be honest of all the garmin products I like my current GPSr, however some of the Delorma models are nice and their 'Map Subscription Service' is very attractive in comparison to Garmin's map restrictions.

What GPSr Make and Model do you use? I currently use a Dakota 10 with an eTrex Legend H as backup.

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr? Dakota 10 - 8, Legend H - 6

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best? Paperless caching

What is the worst thing about your GPSr? No electronic compass

If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next? Right now it would be a Dakota 20. In a few months when the new eTrex line comes out i'd go for the top model.

What GPSr Make and Model do you use? HTC HD7 Mobile Phone.

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr? 8, the GPS gets me within 10 or so feet, however, I'm not liking the Bing Maps as much as Google Maps.

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best? Not having to worry about PQ's, satellite view.

What is the worst thing about your GPSr? Probably a little too expensive to bring into the woods.

If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next? I gave it some thought, and the biggest reason I haven't spent the money on a full fledged GPSr is mainly the Satellite view, so the GPSr I really want in the PN-60 which has satellite view.

My GPS is just a simple one that has hidden a lot of complicated multis so if it works for that its good enough for me.

I had to get a new gps (Vista) because the adhesive that holds the rubber bumper on the Legend melted (and then the bumper got scraped off the GPS while I slid down Mt Sneffels- I love REI's 100% returns policy).

Nexus One (currently running Android 2.3.4) with Groundspeak's Geocaching app.

eTrex (Garmin's original yellow eTrex, before there were multiple eTrex models)

sqrt(-64), aka 8i for mathematicians, or 8j for electrical engineers

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best?

eTrex: rugged durability (close second: battery life)

What is the worst thing about your GPSr?

I don't have a specific model in mind, but the next GPSr I purchase will have a modern high-sensitivity receiver and will have easy paperless geocaching data transfer that does not require a computer running MS Windows.

Magellan Explorist GC

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr?

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best?

Size, regular batteries, works as a mass-storage device so GPX files are very easy to copy to it with no special software needed on any OS.

What is the worst thing about your GPSr?

I wish it had a compass. That's the only thing it doesn't have that would make it perfect. My needs aren't complex. I load a bunch of GPX files on and go for it, so even though this is a "beginner" model, I really don't need anything more.

And finally If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next?

Not sure. Maybe higher up the Magellan Explorist line so I could get one with a built in compass. It would be a nice feature to have. Other than that, I don't see a need for an upgrade for my purposes.

Hard to say. The Oregon 550t looks nice, but way out of my budget. Montana's sound promising. Supposedly, Delorme is working on a PN-90. Would be nice to see what features that will have.

Also have an iPod Touch 2nd gen with a Dual XGPS251 attachement

Best Feature, I can now do Wherigo's, also have a gps with me wherever I go in case I want to grab a quick FTF while at work.

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best? paperless caching and a file system that allows me to hold thousands of caches and load caches from for whatever region I'm caching in.

What is the worst thing about your GPSr? Battery life is horrible. Fonts are way too small and there is a bug that can cause me to over write my cache files. And it wants to save my caches to disk every time I shut it off and that can take several minutes. It also loses reception and doesn't regain it unless I restart it and when I do it automatically tries to save the file to the card which can take several minutes. This shouldn't happen. I should have the option to save.

Another 60CSX here.

Rate about a 9 out of 10.

Like: Accuracy, battery life, adaptability.

Dislike: The biggest thing is it is not paperless. It would be a 10 otherwise. Very small thing, the four direction button is a little vague, I prefer the way Garmin does it on the Etrex.

Buy next: I am happy enough with the 60 that I am not even looking at what else is available.

Motorola Droid using the GeoHunter app.

I should note I make extensive use of PQs and GSAK to keep an offline database to use on GeoHunter - much like a user of a normal GPS does. (The app is usable for on-the-fly caching, but it only downloads an LOC file when doing so which means lots of bringing up the website or writing stuff down - not very effective). While it takes a little time to prep by offline database, it has two big advantages: I can filter out caches I don't want and I can conserve battery life better than the live/real-time apps (especially a certain third party app that I know is very popular with Droid users despite it violating the Groundspeak TOS).

On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr?

8 - some limitations but I'm very happy with it

What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best?

Google Satellite Maps are amazing. It also plays Wherigo cartridges, gives me field access to the cache page, and doubles as a phone so I don't need to buy a phone AND a GPS.

What is the worst thing about your GPSr?

As good as the reception is (often down to +/- 6 ft), I think there are several GPSr out there which can better handle tree cover and are more precise. And while the battery life is good for a smartphone (6+ hours without charging), it's still not as good as a GPS would be.

If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next?

I've never researched GPSr and have minimal experience with any so I don't really know. But I recall hearing good things about the Magellan Explorist so that would probably be the first thing I considered.

Hey HHH! Love your youtube channel!

-I use a garmin etrex legend Hcx

-I'd give it an 8/10

-I like that it is easy to use, it's easy to figure out how to change any function, and preform any operation. It also does just about everything I could need

-No paperless caching. This really really bugs me.

-I am on the fence about my next gps. I want a garmin. I want paperless caching. Dakota meets my needs, and is in my price range, but I don't like the touch screen. GPSMAP62 and related tick all the boxes as well, but are pricer than Dakota and I find them bulky, whereas Dakota would fit in my pocket easily.

Model: Garmin eTrex Lengend HCx

Rating out of ten: 8

Favorite feature: long battery life

Worst part: Similar to other etrex users, the rubber sides start to come off... luckily fixed it with some precisely cut carpet tape.

What new GPS would I get: Oregon something or other...

the rubber is coming off on mine as well, hardcore. it's not bothering me though, just looks kinda... ghetto for lack of a better term. I could hockey tape it in place, that would probably last a few months before needing to change the tape.

Worst Feature:

Oregon = Inability to delete caches on unit, and does not connect to Geocaching.com

When you say it doesn't connect to Geocaching.com, what do you mean exactly? Do you mean that you can't surf the internet with it?

Since I have an Oregon, I guess Team Gawfer means it does not have wifi / 3G to connect directly to geocaching.com to pull caches into it without using a computer, like a smartphone can.

GPS MAP 76csx Scale of 1-10 i give it a 9 1/2.. Cons clunky buttons and not paper less and no touch screen, other than that it is grrreat..seriously accurate

Dakota 10 got it for the paperless and touch screen ,still working it out if you know what i mean

scale of 1-10 right now a solid 7.. but think it it will get better as i get smarter

Droid Charge....have just started to work with this..and it is just about like cheating use c:geo and geocaching.com apps and it really is scary how good it is...Great visual reference as for the Google maps and point of direction ..great compass....Cons ..horrible battery life...got 2 regular and 1 long life battery to get thru the day

On a side note..It seems us boys must have our toys from some of the response you got from this..now lets see where did i put that GPS catalog..

Garmin H

8

It is incredibly accurate.

No paperless, no maps.

Oregon 400T

9.5

Paperless, does Wherigo, has great topo maps.

complex to use new features for my pea-brain, must be moving for compass to work

Android.

Sucks to use for caching. Good to look up caches on, maybe, almost.

I'd get the newest of the Garmin 62CX series that has paperless caching on it.
