Michigan Benchmark - not in database

Recommended Posts

There is a NGS marking in our city ( i shouldn't call it a benchmark, right?) We have walked by it many times but not until we got into Geocaching, and started inquiring about benhmarks did we think about it. I have pictures (need to see how to upload them) and could probably get the coordinates..

Markings say Station No. 11 ... V

I haven't found it in the database and was wondering if anyone could help me find out more. Please help. thanks, The Bajii.

Copy/paste form a previous thread, HEARTLAND STATE SURVEY MARKS, on this unique type of bench mark - BM in this connotation meaning a very accurate elevation.

Please check the L/L that you posted. I remember kayak racing into and out of Benton Harbor many years ago. kayakbird

Of the 470 set in Nebraska, there are less than 50 maybes with PID's. It appears that some non-published SS marks were used for RM and AZ marks. Designation numbers set by NEGS start at 61 and go up to 635. CGS was the setting agency for two that do have the wording:

MK1240 DESIGNATION - STATION 64 NOTE-- GEODITIC SURVEY AND STATE SURVEY;

ML0701_STAMPING: 661 NORTH OF THE NORTH RAIL OF THE MAIN TRACK. A STATE SURVEY STANDARD DISK, STAMPED 661.

No STATE SURVEY marks in Nebraska have been logged into GC.

kayakbird - I have no idea what you just said, and if you meant to reply to my post? Is this post about the michigan Ngs disk?

Sorry, typoed your L/L, which brought up not so fond memories of huge waves exiting the Benton Harbor harbor.

Should have asked this question first: have you read the pinned topic "Me First" at the top of this forum page? And did you go to the link in my previous message?

It is usually very helpful when you request assistance on this forum to fully describe the stamping on the mark and maybe scab a photo on to one of your other logs which can then be linked here.

Filtering STATE SURVEY & CGS+SS in GSAK it appears that in Michigan there may be 231 CGS & State Survey marks with PIDs (most with accurate 1934 placed dates) of which 33 have been logged by geocachers. AA5509 (recovered in 1993), NE0721, NF0178 and NF0180 are in Washtenaw Co.

edit: These PID's have photographs in the current NGS DATASHEET - SG0217, OK0414, NF0784, NF1145, NE0322.

Good hunting, kayakbird

Yes, but it has a "V" where your "I" is and it looks more neatly typed than yours. LOL.

Do you know why it isn't in the database? and what do you call it? benchmark? marking what?

and can I log it?

thanks.

Your mark is one of a series of bench marks set by the "US Coast and Geodetic Survey and the State Survey" (State Survey = MIGS).

The photo I attached previously was from another one of those marks, AA5509, in nearby Ann Arbor and was taken by -Brian-M-.

As kayakbird mentioned, most of those particular type of Michigan marks are not in the geocaching database so you can not log it there. There are thousands and thousands of marks across the US that are not in the database. It does not mean they are not "benchmarks", it just means they are not in the geochaching, or NGS, databases. You can, however, log your 11...V find on Waymarking.com if you wish - in the benchmark category there.

Also, congratulations on finding NE1484 today - good job!

Thanks TillaMurph! It also gives an elevation.

Kayakbird - I did read part of the beginning of the pinned post. But it is not very newbie friendly! :) I looked at your link, but in all honesty, doesn't click yet for me. Too much verbage and acronyms! I meant to post photo, but have not figured out the http: part instead of uploading it from my computer. So, I had to describe the markings.

68-eldo - Yes that is it in the pic.

Bummed I can't log it - but still love learning about this stuff, however slow I might be!

Thanks for all your help.

I also have to figure out PID, and what it is, etc... and more about the benchmarks in my area. We are planning a trip to the western side of Michigan and would like to find some there while geocaching.

I have a lot to learn but it is a rather large learning curve.

Thanks again.

The Bajii,

I barely remember from one photo upload session to the next how to get a photo in a forum message, but this is what I do:

a. First post your photo of the State Survey disk with your Ypsilanti log.

b. Close this page, then re-navigate to the Geocache page for NE1484, select that photo and copy its http.

c. Select the photo icon from this page.

d. Delete the existing http://.

e. Right click and select Paste.

ee. Click on 'Insert Link'.

Photo http should appear in the body of your message. Check that by going to 'Preview Post' below.

To get that cute little underlined PID link:

f. Go back to the Geocache page.

g. Back out of the photo.

h. Copy the PID page hhtp.

j. Select the link icon above.

k. Delete the existing http://.

l. Right click and select Paste.

m. Delete the words 'My Link' and type in the PID.

n. Click 'Insert Link'.

p. Preview Post.

Some of the techie's will likely jump in with a less tedious method.

PID = Permanent ID #, i.e.; NE1484

Hope that you get some more of these SS marks. They are one of my favorite targets.

To put it in a nutshell; you must post your picture somewhere else, you can not upload a picture to this site. Any web site will work. If you have a Picasa Web account you can post the picture there. One of the popular ways to post a picture is to add the picture to one of your Geocaching logs. The picture I posted is on my personal web site.

Once you have posted the picture then copy the URL (http://umptedump.com/any.jpg) and paste it into the text of your post here. With the URL highlighted click on the Insert image button above the text box. It will put the proper image tags around the URL.

HTH (Hope that helps.)

Thank you so much - You guys ROCK! My parents are in PA at the Gettysburg Civil War Battlefields / Cemetery, they are going to see if they can find a few benchmarks while there. I sent them pictures and areas to look by monuments... It would be so cool if they find a couple while out there!! SO exciting, so much history! sweet.
