+StarBrand Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 This is why I place caches. XXXXXXX found Tip Top of the Ridge (Traditional Cache) at 6/4/2011 Log Date: 6/4/2011 Always loved the Pine Ridge area. Work all along Sand Canyon and Cottonwood Creek to the south. Had many great experiances here working on the geology of the area back in the 1960's. Had to log this cache. As I approached GZ - well not the real GZ I heard a strange clicking sound and looking up there was a wild turkey not 10feet away from me. Not moving fast but definately trying to attract my attention. Then I caught a movement in the grass near my feet - oh crap a snake - nope was lucky it was a recently hatched turkeylet scurrying away towards its mother. Caching can be so cool. Thanks for placing this cache in a great place. Quote
AZcachemeister Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Yup. Nobody ever comments on the Lexus they saw in the strip-mall parking lot. Quote
Tahosa and Sons Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Yes it is those quality logs that go along with a quality cache. To me that is what it is about. Quote
+KBfamily Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Yup. Nobody ever comments on the Lexus they saw in the strip-mall parking lot. How about the cache where I ran into a strange dude in a kilt wanting to borrow a writing stick? True story! Quote

jholly Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Or the DNF log I got It was a DNF, but an interesting one... We found the APE cache and along with a it a coin looking to get to Bainbridge Island... It was getting late, but we thought, "WHAT A COINCIDENCE! Bainbridge is where we're going next!" So, we took the coin and headed out. After arriving at the Island, it was pretty late but we had this darn coin and we were leaving the next morning. Foolishly, we tried Dr. Who's Sibling and failed due to not reading the cache description prior. Went after a random cache (this one) next... Pretty park, but the sun was vanishing and our flashlight was dead. Trying to beat the night, we briskly walked out on to the trail and tried to find the cache. The sun was all but down, we were using our cell phones and GPSrs for extra and we were coming up short. We kept looking in vain until we heard Kellen make a angry grunting noise from the bush. "What was that!?" "Kellen whining." We searched for another moment when Kellen came stumbling out of the brush. Again, we heard the grunting noise... It wasn't Kellen. "We need to leave" We're 90% sure we heard a bear near GZ. We aren't from around here, BUT we do hike a lot and we know what a cow or rutting deer sounds like. After trying to talk ourselves out of it, doing some amateur research on Google and listening to various animals on youtube... we really think we heard a black bear. We got out in a hurry and had the scare of our collective lives. Lessons learned: 1. Don't go after caches at night without light 2. Don't cache in bear country 3. Don't be a complete idiot under pressure Didn't find the cache, but now we have a story to tell. Might have been a bear, don't know, never heard bear stories from Bainbridge Island. Or this one ... Found the first two caches of the Mosquito Fleet Series and was on the way to #3 until we saw a large black bear on the road. Needless to say, we turned around and headed the other way! Will complete the series another day. I know bear are out there, see the scat just about every time I go. Quote
+popokiiti Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 If the scat is still steaming, we pass on the cache it is close to.......... Quote

+Mushroom finder Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Here are some of mine. There's about 20 others that are just as nice. Never received a generic "TFTC" on this one. To me getting awesome logs like these are one of my favorite parts of geocaching. Found it May 7 by FRIED OKRA (4193 found) THIS IS THE BEST CACHE IN MISSOURI IN MY OPINION. A HUGE Thanks to: Mushroom Finder for placing this cache and providing me with many hours of planning and enjoyment. SmilingBee and batman17 for all of the information and encouragement. HOT FRIED OKRA - For making the drop and making me a very happy man. Jason - For the instruction and safety. Without you, this would not have been possible on this day. Gredgeman, Tagalong Lynn, Atomic Goats Breath, Libby, Specter, Sterling, Jason, Hot Fried Okra and C*Dawg. Being able to do these thing with friends is the best part of any adventure. I have had my eye on this cache since the day it was published. I made several trips to the area including one via kayak to plan the attack. On this trip, I just about stepped on a copperhead while climbing down the Devil's Staircase. We made the find on the most beautiful day of the year. The weather was perfect and the winds were calm. We spent just over 6 hours on the bluff and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait for the video! This is easily one of my favorite caches. No hippies were harmed while finding this cache. Found it May 8, 2009 by batman17 (1320 found) So last summer SmilingBee tells me there is a new cache. I say: OK. Let's find it. She says: It is down by the Scout camp near Osceola. I say: OK. Let's find it. She says: it is a 4/5 cache. I ask: Is it regular size?. She says: Yes. I say: OK. let's find it. She says: It is in a cave in the side of a cliff. I say: OK. We don't need to find this one. She says: We do. So 10 months later: *rope time at the climbing gym: $35.00 *gasoline for three round trips to Osceola: $153.17 *proper climbing gear for two: $532.84 *overcoming phobias of heights and caves: priceless *For everything else: there's bragging rights for being FTF on this awesome cache with SmilingBee! First attempt on cache was in weather unfit for man or beast except, of course, for geocachers. With waves taller than the canoe we launched from the peninsula on the opposite shore of the lake. In a cove protected from the wind, we made our landing. The wind blew so hard at the top of the cliff that any attempt to throw the rope would put it right back in our face. No attempt on the cache was considered that day. We did notice that there was a neighborhood very near the cache site. The next week we think there is no reason to drag the canoe along, we can just park & "grab". No- this cache can not be accessed from there. On the third attempt, the day started with rains of Old Testament proportions. But alas the skies clear and the winds calm. It is time to cache! We gently glide over the water and land near the base of the rappel site. We thought we were foiled again when we saw the poison ivy at deck level directly below the cave. Either it had to go or we would certainly go home without a find again. With the determination only SmilingBee has, that ivy was gone! We were on our way! Thank you Mushroom Finder for the most memorable cache I am ever likely to find. This was over the top for somebody who is content to stay on the ground and out of enclosed spaces. Quote

+hukilaulau Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) Lookig at the title of this thread I was reminded that when I wrote something like this in the forums, a cacher with four weeks experience told me I was "hiding caches for the wrong reason" I don't think he's around anymore... Clan Riffster Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Yup. Nobody ever comments on the Lexus they saw in the strip-mall parking lot. But they might comment about the Lamborghini or the Ferrari... Nah. Odds are, if they are caching in a parking lot, they are a number (farm implement). Their nose will be buried in their GPSr, looking for the next film can. They could trip over a Ferrari and not notice. Quote
