+StarBrand Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I've been noticing for a week or two or more that the time stamp on Forum posts is off by 6 or 7 minutes. As I hit 'post' the time on my atomic clock is 8:49am mountain time. Quote
+Panther&Pine Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Yep, agreed. I thought it was my workstation for a while but it does it at home as well. Quote
+StarBrand Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 I searched for a Feedback topic - didn't see one. I'll have to borrow my son's account to have votes for starting one. Quote
+StarBrand Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Ok - vote here: http://feedback.geocaching.com/forums/75775-geocaching-com/suggestions/1814069-forum-time Quote
+nittany dave Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Really, for 7 minutes? I think I'll save my votes for things that are more important (to me). Quote
+StarBrand Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Really, for 7 minutes? I think I'll save my votes for things that are more important (to me). thats why I wish the folks at the Lilypad more regularly hung out in the forums still. I had to use my son's account for votes enough to even bring it up. The feedback area is the only place to report issues. Quote
+The Blorenges Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) I need to check this myself. Posting this at 16:38 according to my PC. Edited to add: Yep 7 minutes missing in UK too. MrsB Edited May 13, 2011 by The Blorenges Quote
+Walts Hunting Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Who cares. After a 6 hour hike ride and caching 7 minues is irrelevant. Another reason they should allow no votes on the feedback page. Quote
+t4e Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) just have to look at the bottom of the page to see the current forum time .... Time Now: May 13 2011 12:20 PM but i don't see what the big deal is Edited May 13, 2011 by t4e Quote
+StarBrand Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Agreed - it isn't a major issue or even a magor one but it is wrong - and ought to be corrected. Might even be behind some of the forum upgrade issues some new users are experiencing. Only the developers can answer that.... Quote
+Team GPSaxophone Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) The forum time says it's a minute behind my PC, but I haven't checked the atomic clock in Boulder. One minute! We demand this be fixed at once!</sarcasm> edit: Time Now: May 13 2011 11:27 AM, time of edit 11:28 Edited May 13, 2011 by Team GPSaxophone Quote

+Panther&Pine Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) Did it get fixed? Testing. 11:38 Edit: Nope Edited May 13, 2011 by MooseJawSpruce Quote
knowschad Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Well, I dunno... it could have consequences. Remember all those reports of Premium Members that have Pocket Queries and other geocaching bennies of being a PM, but can't get to the Off Topic forum? Server times can be important. I'm not saying that IS what has caused the problem, but just that, without knowing how these things work, that it may be more than a coincidence. At least its worth noting and correcting. Quote

Milliseconds can make a difference, depending on how the code may be written. If time1 != l time2 then all bets are off. Now, remember, I said loud and clear that "I'm not saying that IS what has caused the problem". Speaking from a professional point of view with experience, I highly doubt it that this particular piece of communication happens on a timestamp dependent basis. If anything, only the expiration of PM status might be timestamp dependent on forum side, assuming the forum software supports group membership with expiration dates. And as soon as you get two or more systems communicating with each other, expecting the timestamps to match up at any given moment (even if the timestamps are only granular to one second) is insane. I think not even Groundspeak would do that Quote

I think not even Groundspeak would do that Speaking from a professional point of view with experience, I have seen issues where server timestamps were off. But I'm a programmer, not a networking guru, so I can only say that I was told that was the problem. But really... silly to argue a point like that here, isn't it? I was simply making an observation, and I seriously doubt that the time issue was the problem. Quote
