Forum Time

Recommended Posts

I've been noticing for a week or two or more that the time stamp on Forum posts is off by 6 or 7 minutes.

As I hit 'post' the time on my atomic clock is 8:49am mountain time.

Really, for 7 minutes? I think I'll save my votes for things that are more important (to me).

thats why I wish the folks at the Lilypad more regularly hung out in the forums still. I had to use my son's account for votes enough to even bring it up. The feedback area is the only place to report issues.

just have to look at the bottom of the page to see the current forum time :P .... Time Now: May 13 2011 12:20 PM

but i don't see what the big deal is

Agreed - it isn't a major issue or even a magor one but it is wrong - and ought to be corrected.

Might even be behind some of the forum upgrade issues some new users are experiencing. Only the developers can answer that....

The forum time says it's a minute behind my PC, but I haven't checked the atomic clock in Boulder.

One minute! We demand this be fixed at once!</sarcasm>

edit: Time Now: May 13 2011 11:27 AM, time of edit 11:28

Well, I dunno... it could have consequences. Remember all those reports of Premium Members that have Pocket Queries and other geocaching bennies of being a PM, but can't get to the Off Topic forum? Server times can be important. I'm not saying that IS what has caused the problem, but just that, without knowing how these things work, that it may be more than a coincidence. At least its worth noting and correcting.

How many times have you stuck your foot in your mouth or done something dumb and wished you could have the last few minutes back for a do-over? Groundspeak was giving it to us and y'all made them take it away!

unrelated, forums and GC.com are on different servers

ummmm - reread that post - that was actually the point.

Yes, I'm aware of that. They still have to communicate with each other, especially when it comes to letting the forums know that a user is a PM.

Yes, I do. Milliseconds can make a difference, depending on how the code may be written. If time1 != l time2 then all bets are off.

Now, remember, I said loud and clear that "I'm not saying that IS what has caused the problem".

Speaking from a professional point of view with experience, I highly doubt it that this particular piece of communication happens on a timestamp dependent basis. If anything, only the expiration of PM status might be timestamp dependent on forum side, assuming the forum software supports group membership with expiration dates.

And as soon as you get two or more systems communicating with each other, expecting the timestamps to match up at any given moment (even if the timestamps are only granular to one second) is insane. I think not even Groundspeak would do that

Speaking from a professional point of view with experience, I have seen issues where server timestamps were off. But I'm a programmer, not a networking guru, so I can only say that I was told that was the problem.

But really... silly to argue a point like that here, isn't it? I was simply making an observation, and I seriously doubt that the time issue was the problem.

It's a new fangled time machine I tells ya!

For some reason I can't seem to get a vision of a group of hamsters doing a hamsterdance to "Let's do the time warp" out of my head.

Did anyone feel a tremor a little after 15:00 Eastern time?

4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Those LOST minutes could have been the difference between Flight 815 landing on time or 815 visiting an uncharted island.
