+spdrbob Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Being new to the game I have a questions about what to do in regards to another person's cache. I've found a few in which the log was completely soaked almost to a point of being pulp , either because of a leaky ziplock or cache. What do you do in this situation ? Log a need maintenance and leave it alone ? Replace with new paper and ziplock ? If so what do you do with the old log ? Thanks All ! Quote

If you have a spare peice of dry paper you can use as the log, then go for it. Otherwise take a picture to prove you found it. Quote
+StarBrand Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I never take somebody else's log. I carry a Uniball Powertank RT pen that writes on most any soggy piece of paper. Go home log the find and the Needs Maintenance. Sometimes (if there is room) I'll add a new logsheet and ziploc bag. If the log is just a bit damp - I'll take the time to try and dry things out before tucking it back in. Quote
+rbc123 Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Usually you are not the first to find the log wet and it was probably already logged that it needed help. I carry a few different logs and ziplocks and will replace the logs as needed. As far as what to do with the old one, I will leave it in place in it's own ziplock if there is room and you can also e-mail the co and ask what they would like you to do with the old log. If it's so bad that it is usless I would say the nearest garbage can. Quote
+the4dirtydogs Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 We carry extra logs and baggies just for this reason. If we can dry the log with the car heater then we will. If the log is moldy pulp we just leave the log in the container and put in the nice dry log in a baggie for the next cachers to be able to sign something dry. We repair caches too if they need a little TLC. Quote
+briansnat Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Logging a NM is the best way to go. If the log is wet it usually means the container needs to be replaced. If you add a log odds are it will be soaked soon. Quote
Clan Riffster Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 For me, the answer largely depends on the cache. I have a strongly biased caching aesthetic which leads me to the belief that some caches are great, some caches really suck and some fall somewhere in between. If I find myself at what I perceive as a crappy cache, I usually won't log anything at all. If, for some reason I do decide to log it, I'll include a statement regarding the condition of the log. The one thing I won't do is fix a crappy cache. I don't want to be known as a crappy cache enabler. On the other hand, I have gone to great lengths to fix caches that appeal to my quirky aesthetics. Along the same lines, I will fix it up if it should be or if the CO is known to be out of the game and it is a worthy cache. I have taken old soaked logs home and left in the garage to dry out and have emailed the CO...but have never had one that wanted it back. Of course, I am newer to the game and not so bound by the historical ways. I will always add a log if the one there is full. Quote
+A & J Tooling Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 So, do you replace the log when it'll just get ruined again due to the crappy nature of the cache? I don't. I just write it off as a lost cause... and report it as needing maintenance. Quote
+DanOCan Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I'll log my Find and then a NM since I never carry caching repair supplies with me. Quote

+gsmX2 Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 I appreciate it when someone adds a log when mine is full or replaces a log that's soaked (usually caused by someone putting a cache back upside down so water collects and leaks through the lid), and I return the favor as often as I can. Quote
