I attempted to do a .gpx download from the NGS site as listed in the "Me first" section and my state(WV) has none listed and gives me an error. Has anyone else ran into this and am I doing something wrong???

Try this link and select "Datasheets", scroll down and select "county". Choose the state and then choose the county you want.

Mike, whenever you download datasheets, they are going to be in the .dat file format. You will need to use a convertor program that changes them to a .gpx format that your gps unit and programs like GSAK can read.

There are a few fantastic pieces of software that will do these conversions for you.

(Listed in alphabetical order)There is one called BMGPX, another named NGS-GPX, and another called NGSREAD

Are there any conversion applications that run under Mac OS or Linux? Any open source?

There is a version of BMGPX that runs at the command line in OSX as discussed in this older thread, but the links to it therein appear to no longer be valid. If you send me your email address via a note through my profile on here I can forward you a copy of the executable and source code.
