little=dragon Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 heard about Geocaching awhile ago and did nothing about it. but after my teenage son has spent most of a lovely Easter weekend cocooned in his bedroom, though we could give it a go. can't afford to buy a GPS and haven't got the right mobile to get one on there, but do have a very basic Sat Nav. it's a Binatone X350. would I be able to use that without too much bother. (think I can ) thanks Quote
+briansnat Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I don't know much about that model, but in general automotive units make poor choices for geocaching. You can use them, but there are numerous negatives including poor battery life, lack of field replaceable batteries, no compass navigation screen, lack of durability and water resistance, and they are a poor fit in the hand. That said, if you can input coordinates into your unit, then you can use it for geocaching. Quote
+Mark+Karen Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Personally I wouldn't.. While you can go geocaching with automotive units they'll give you a bad first impression of geocaching! I tried it with my TomTom and it always wanted to lock onto the road, didn't give a clear idea of which direction the cache was actually in - no proper compass! And the biggest problem was that it was too big to hold in the field and if I put it in my pocket it would end up pushing things on the touch screen which meant I lost my settings..a bit of a faff indeed! +A & J Tooling Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 You can hit a lot with just google maps. That'll get you in the general vicinity and a little looking will net you the cache. I think it is more fun that way but I've never tried the gpsr yet so I only know this way of doing things. Quote
