A Jerk?

On the other side of the equation, my wife and I were unsuccessful today at finding a first to find. My wife sent an email to the CO (a rather popular cacher in our area), asking if we had come close. The cache was a micro hidden near some I-Beams. We were going to accept our DNF frownies and move on, but my wife received a somewhat elitist email from the cache owner. The email addressed the fact that my wife was a noob, and had we found one of his many prior caches we wouldn't have such a problem finding his cache.

Seems like a CO would like to have a cache found with providing such a condescending attitude to fellow geocachers...

When using the internet to communicate, its hard to convey tone.

However, when people use the word "jerk" nowadays its almost always playful. I know a lot of geocachers are not of a generation that has grown up with the internet (few people are) but a nice set of guidlines to use on the internet are:

1. Always assume someone means something in the nicest way unless they make it clear otherwise.

2. Add the words, "In my opinion..." to any view expressed by a stranger.

If people followed these two guidlines we'd have less flaming, misunderstandings and dumb looking emoticons.

What I'm saying is, I read the cachers log as playful because it seems irrational for it be serious. I'm they type of person who would not assume a person is mean or crazy when its just as likely they aren't.

Get we get this post made into a sticky? I think I'll be printing it out and taping it to the wall, if not actually framing it.

Well said! (in my opinion)

So I got a Did Not Find for one of my caches:

hey, could u have picked a more painful place to hide this? jerk.

going back to find it when gps starts working again.

This hide is actually a really easy one, just it just happens to have a lot of buckthorn if you approach from wrong direction, which is not shortest way in.

I was somewhat amused by his post. What kind of similar posts have others had?

I just noticed that you are in my neck of the woods. Sorry to hear about this. I agree that the times they are a' changing.

His other logs:

  • yep.
  • um... yeah.
  • found it before we even got out of the car.
  • yep.
  • second smallest geocache i've seen yet. (log for a very nice history cache)
  • not sure how the name relates, but what ever.
  • easy bo cheesy.
  • quick and easy. lots of ppl gave us weird looks as they jogged down the path, oh well. took a geocoin... but i'm not quite sure what i'm supposed to do with it.

Hey, cut 'em some slack. It can't be easy being an emo kid in the Twin Cities.

After reading their logs, it ain't a guy. It's a girl.

That's a cool trick. How can you tell? (Are you some sort of online carny?)

What is my weight and age?

Old and heavy.

Whereever it is, you should have been there tomorrow.

Glad to metcha. I'm a jerk, too. Didn't know it, not until the logs started coming in on a lock n' lock I hide in some leafs at the base of a bush. Yeah, a few prickers here and there, but I had no problems with them while placing them. I suppose I should check that some weasel didn't cram it in the middle of the briar patch, though.

Last finder had a run-in with John Law at the site. Makes me feel a little guilty for all the problems of finders, but then, I've used my share of expletives while trying to find caches, too.

If you're going to be a GeoCacher, you'd best get used to it. Not a bad idea to take along a hiking pole to help clear pointy or noxious obstacles.

I was one of those who donated blood. Didn't realize I was supposed to call you jerk for that. Very well. Jerk. Sorry for the omission.

Advised a CO that they might want to remove the ALR on their new cache and got an F-O reply and told to mind my own business. Well, you got it, chief. Just trying to help you not get your cache archived.

That would be an email I would forward to GS. There is no place in this game for that carp.

No place for carp anywhere, if you ask me!

Speaking of jerks, there's a Jamaican restaurant in Menlo Park, just outside East Palo Alto on University Avenue. Don't think there are any caches nearby, but they serve a fantastic chicken jerk.

You're certainly welcome, dum-dum :anibad: I'll have a look at it this weekend, perhaps move it a little one way or the other. I was certainly surprised to see the latest entry on Great Balls o' Fire, but guess that's as likely to happen at any drive-up cache. I've seen the flashers in the rear view a couple times meself.

"Hallo you, Gentlements. Is glorious day in republic, no?"
