+nypackman
When caching with a group of people what approach do you use for finds. 1. The first person who locates it retrieves it and everyone signs the log. 2. The first person who locates it retrieves it and only they sign the log since the others really didn't find it. 3. Each individual locates it on there own and stops looking but doesn't retrieve it until everyone has located it or given up then those who located it sign the log. Quote Link to comment
+Sharks-N-Beans
Depends. PNG=1 Fun find=3 Long drawn-out find=1 Never 2 Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Usually 1 and 3. 3 if it is a smaller group. 1 if it's a larger group because once you get above 10 so people, 3 becomes a bit impractical. Quote Link to comment
GOF and Bacall
Depends on the group. Usually 3 but sometimes 1. Quote Link to comment
+JL_HSTRE
Depends on the group and the cache. Mundane hides are pretty much always first to spot reveals to all. For more clever hides that's when I like to let others spot it for themselves. Quote Link to comment
jholly
3 If it was 3 I probably would have something pressing at home and leave. Quote Link to comment

I'd say generally, most of the time, No. 3. I suppose it would depend on the situation, like if it were an LPC in a parking lot, but I don't have any experience in that area. Quote Link to comment

Each individual locates it on there own and stops looking but doesn't retrieve it until everyone has located it and then the log is signed with the team name. Online logs are done under the individual names but mention the team name. Quote Link to comment
+Medgasman
On my FTF this afternoon, it was five a group of us looking in all different locations. I found it, but everyone signed the log, because they all looked yesterday. Quote Link to comment
+CanadianRockies
Depends, but often: 5. The first person who locates it retrieves it and signs everyone's name on the log. Quote Link to comment
Night_Hiker
1 always...3 is far too time consuming and it can get tiresome looking for the same cache for hours. Quote Link to comment
jholly
1 always...3 is far too time consuming and it can get tiresome looking for the same cache for hours. And the other problem with 3 is if there is a red herring involved you never know you found the cache until you pull it out and open it up. Quote Link to comment
AZcachemeister
Option 6. IF I see it first, I palm it and sneak away to sign the log. Once everyone else tires of looking and a DNF is called, I find an excuse to linger behind as they move on to the next cache (watering the bushes usually works here), and replace the container as I found it! No, not really! Quote Link to comment
+sbell111
We go with the 'Three Musketeers' method, #1. Quote Link to comment
+Team GPSaxophone
3 always, but everyone gets to claim the find. The rest of the group might "give up" right away depending on the cache or if the first finder gives away the hiding spot. Quote Link to comment
+geodarts
In my area, most of us use 5 - the finder signs the log for eveyone. If it is a large group, we generally use a group name. As a CO I prefer people who find a cache together to sign it together to conserve on log space (unless it is a large notebook in an ammo can that few visit) to reduce maintenance. But if you don't know how everyone wants to do it, it is generally a good idea to get a consensus before you head out. And different considerations will be in play if it is an impromptu group that just happens to meet at a cache site. Edited April 19, 2011 by mulvaney Quote Link to comment
+paleolith
Clearly a lot of regional variation. The places I've been, I've never heard of any methods besides 1 and 5, and it's usually 5 (one person signs for all). In fact, larger groups often come up with a group sig rather than signing for each individual. Edward Quote Link to comment
+lamoracke
Often 1, but sometimes we pass the log around and everyone signs it. #2 is silly. #3 is impractical. There are some cachers out there who refuse to claim a find unless they find it first...its not as fun to cache with these folks IMHO. What are they going to do, come back in 4 months and hope they have forgotten where it was? Edited April 19, 2011 by lamoracke Quote Link to comment

+A & J Tooling
My kids don't care about signing....yet. I don't really do the group thing but how can it be fun with so many people (over 3)? Quote Link to comment
+BAMBOOZLE
1 Once in a blue moon 3 Quote Link to comment
+TheSapaFamily
Choice #1. My husband and I always hunt together so we log our finds under one account. My sister and her family of four use one account too. When we hunt together, whoever has the pen signs the log with both of our geocaching names. Quote Link to comment
+Harry Dolphin
5. Usually small groups. My caching partner, and/or my brother and sister. One signs for all. Quote Link to comment
+niraD
It depends on the cache and the group. In general, if the hides are interesting, I prefer a variant of 3: Each individual locates it, walks away and says "found it" (or "huckle buckle beanstalk", or whatever), and waits for the others to find it. After a while, the others either give up or ask for hints. The hints start small, but get bigger over time. Then someone retrieves the cache and signs for everyone, including any who gave up without finding it individually. And no, it isn't impractical at all. Quote Link to comment
+roziecakes
We go with the 'Three Musketeers' method, #1. Me too! That's the way we do it. Quote Link to comment
+DanOCan
Quite often the #5 method -- the finder puts everyone's name in the log. Usually the person will ask "Want me to sign you in?" and unless the cache is something special and everyone wants to sign in themselves the answer is usually "Go ahead." I've done the #3 method a couple of times and found it painful. Either I spot it and have to waste time waiting for others, or everyone else has found it and is wasting time waiting for me. It reminds me of being picked last for sports -- look, can we just get this over with? The only time I play a variation of #2 is if there is a FTF involved. If I am not the first person to spot the container I won't count it as a FTF but I still certainly will claim the Find. Quote Link to comment
+Ike 13
#5 The easy ones are easy and no one cares. It is helpful to have lots of eyes for the more difficult hides. The biggest group search I have ever been a part of was 11 people going after a FTF. We had all looked for it separately or in small groups, but finally decided to team up. It still took 20 minutes and one person finally found it. In that case it would have been impractical and stupid to make everyone else find it individually. Quote Link to comment
+ArcherDragoon
Usually #1...I like the social aspect of this option...I have participated in option #3 a couple times...and to me it just becomes a big competition and no longer fun... . . . I agree with Briansnat...once the group becomes a bit larger (about 10+), #3 becomes a bit impractical...or people start watching each other just so they are not the last to find...
