I recieved an E-mail today from the GSA. It was an invite to go on this Antarctic cruise. It sounds really cool. Did anyone else get this? Is anyone gonna go?

Here is the E-mail I recieved...

Dear EarthCache Master,

GSA has an exciting opportunity to present to you: An invitation to participate in our 27 December 201220 January 2013 Southern Ocean cruise, The Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Arc: Tectonics, Climate and Life.

As an EarthCache Master, you have a taste for outdoor adventure. In this fascinating and critical part of the globe where the largest oceanic current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, sweeps through the narrow Drake Passage between Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Peninsula lies a unique interface of tectonics, climate and teeming life. Join us for an opportunity to discover or create one or more of the most mysterious and highly-prized EarthCache sites on Earth*.

The expedition is co-sponsored by The Geological Society of America in honor of our 125th Anniversary, and The Jackson School of Geosciences in the University of Texas at Austin. Planned in cooperation with the highly experienced Cheesemans Ecology Safaris, it will cater not only to geoscientists, but to all persons interested in the Earth system and its future.

Distinguished scientific leaders, Ian Dalziel of The Jackson School of Geoscience, Richard Alley of The Pennsylvania State University, Rob Dunbar of Stanford University, and Rudolph Trouw of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will lend unprecedented lecturing expertise to complement the Cheesemans experienced staff of wildlife, photographic and historical specialists.

We all hope that you will join us in what promises to be an unforgettable experience, and contribute your own varied background to lively discussion and debate at sea and in the field.

For more information, visit http://www.cheesemans.com/gsa . Current pricing reflects a $500 discount to the first 30 participants. There are only a few discounted berths left. Start planning now for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

We got it too and are trying to figure out if it is real or a hoax/scam.

Hello,

This is definitely a legitimate message and is not a scam of any sort.

The Southern Ocean Cruise is a wonderful trip that the Geological Society of America is running with the University of Texas at Austin.

The trip will include the opportunity to visit EarthCaches in Antarctica.

These opportunities really don’t come along very often, so GSA thought people would appreciate knowing about it!

Best wishes,

Thank you geoawarehq for your post. I am curious where you got my e-mail address from. I don't remember checking any box to sign up for a mailing list or anything of the sort. I'm not saying I am against being part of the list, I just don't like being added without my permission.

ODragon,

The e-mail referred to in this thread was sent by GSA to an internal "EarthCache Masters" e-mail list.

This list is limited to the e-mail addresses of EarthCache Masters, and is managed by GSA.

These e-mail addresses are not shared with third-party organizations (and certainly not Epsilon!)

In fact, to be clear, this e-mail list is not affiliated with Groundspeak, and Groundspeak had nothing to do with this message.

Its contents are solely the responsibility of GSA.

There is a link at the bottom of the original message to "unsubscribe" from this list and opt-out of future communications. (You may need to view the e-mail in "HTML mode" to be able to see the link properly). If anyone has trouble unsubscribing, or has any other questions regarding this message or list, please feel free to contact me through my profile, or at earthcache@geosociety.org.

Sincerely,

GeoawareHQ

I haven't gotten one either. Where do you subscribe or unsubscribe? Thanks.

We have sent out only a few (four I believe) about:

EarthTrek (twice) inviting you to become involved.

A general newsletter last December

This cruise.

You are automatically subscribed when you become an EarthCache Master. You can unsubscribe from the emails using a link at the bottom of the emails.

Thanks - I think I may have become "unsubscribed" when I moved country and my old email address became invalid.

Is there any way of "re-subscribing"?

The only one I ever got about earth caching was the one about this cruise. I've never had any other e-mails for or about earthcaching...

What level EarthCache Master are you? When did you reach that level?

We also know that some peoples spam filters kill off the emails.....you need to make sure that the @geosociety.org domain is not blocked.

We would hate to think people did not get emails about EarthCache related matters - and also want to allow people to stop getting emails if that is their wish.

I'm just a bronze level (think I got it in August last year). I got the cruise e-mail just fine in my regular e-mail but no general newsletter. I check my spam folder before I delete it and nothing earth caching was ever in there either.

But if other people are having issues getting these messages too (at varying levels of master) it appears there's some issue.

I remember all of these.
