New to Benchmark Hunting

Recommended Posts

Hi there! First, thank you for taking a look at this post. I have nearly 1,000 found caches, and have recently been turned onto Benchmark Hunting. I have downloaded archived NGS Datasheets for Washington State, run it through NGS>>GPX, imported that gpx file into GSAK, filtered out only the Benchmarks I want to have on my GPS (DROID running GeoBeagle), I then export that list via File:Export:GPX/LOC file. I view the GPX file, and it appears to have the long description for every benchmark waypoint. I import that GPX file into GeoBeagle, but alas, when I choose the benchmark, the details, there is no text in the description.

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

On a similar note, with caches, in GeoBeagle, if I select view web page, it opens the cache in the web browser. It does not do this for the benchmarks that I have imported to GeoBeagle. I understand it is not doing this as the GPX does not have anything to trigger what webpage to go to. If I download a LOC file however, it does contain "http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=RD2800" Anyone familiar with GSAK know how I can add this line to the GPX file for each Benchmark, since each one has its PID listed?

Thanks!

I see you posted to the GeoBeagle forum that might be your best bet. But ... if you could make a gpx file with just one benchmark and post it here as a code snippit someone might spot the issue. If I remember correctly there is something in the gpx file that says a waypoint is a geocache - that might not be set correctly. I know the GSAK Garmin export macro has a checkbox to tell it to export benchmarks as geocaches - that macro makes a gpx file, you might want to try it and see if the file it makes works on your droid.

welcome to benchmark hunting!!

For immediate gratification, if you are in a service area, try this website Scardy Cat's Mobile Benchmark viewer

Thank you billwallace for the info as well. I had seen the Scardy Cat website before, it is quite nice!

The main point of this reply is to show a gpx file from geocaching that works correctly in GeoBeagle (the app I use on my DROID for GeoCaching), and a GPX file that is exported from GSAK that does NOT show properly on GeoBeagle. The GPX file from GSAK lists the benchmark waypoint in my cache list, when chosen, it will show the benchmark waypoint on the map, and allows proper navigation, when I chose the benchmark waypoint and ask to be shown the details, all that is listed is it saying type Benchmark, the coords, and NO description whatsoever.

I have listed 3 different files. The first file one is the loc file downloaded from geocaching.com for the benchmark PID 2800 "Mackie", I would like to point out the section that provides a link to the benchmark on geocaching.com. I would like to include this type of link in my gpx file as well, perhaps by some kind of macro that is run during the gpx file creation/export. I say this because I also see a link that is included in the goecaching.com gpx file that is read and used by GeoBeagle that allows one with an internet connection to go to the specified page:

LOC file:

Thank you Bullygoat, that did the trick, the description showed up perfectly after changing from 1.1 to 1.0. Now for the more difficult question, the webpage that the gpx file takes me to is the ngs site. Anyone know how to change that to the geocaching site that is found in the loc file?

For that - change the setting in NGS»GPX to point to the GC URL instead of the NGS url. If you can't reimport everything into GSAK again, you'll need a GSAK macro to take care of it for you.

The quickest way is to do a global replace on the database.

Database>Global Replace Select URL and the replace radio button and paste this in:

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=;http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=

Then hit ok. It will replace the NGS link with the GC link and leave the PID number intact.

Thanks for all of the help, it has proved VERY useful. I was able to use the setting in NGS>>GPX to point to the geocaching website instead of NGS as foxtrot said.

I was able to solve the last piece of my puzzle. When converting datasheets downloaded from NGS using the program called NGS>>GPX, in the settings menu is an option as to whether the URL should point to NGS or Geocaching, simplys select geocaching instead of the default ngs site. Upload the resulting GPX to GSAK, select which benchmarks you'd like to use, export them, and be sure that you export using the version 1.0 not 1.1
