jrgomes11
I could be wrong, but I dont know. Is there a data plan required for a GPS, and if so, what would you say is the average. Quote Link to comment
+borrie869
for an actual gpsr reciever there is no data cost, if your using a smartphone with gps built in then you are going to be looking at data usage, depending on how much caching you are doing and if you can find public wifi varies the amount of data you may need, generally per month i get away with using 200mb of data on my smartphone so long as im not watching youtube or downloading apps, only do things like that through wifi Quote Link to comment
jrgomes11
So can I aak the dumb question? HOw does a gps not use data, I heard something about loading maps on to it? Quote Link to comment
+Unobtainium
That is not such a dumb question. Most if not all GPSr's do not have WIFI or any connectivity. You can download maps to some of them, but you need a PC to download the data and then copy it to the device over USB. Quote Link to comment
ao318
Once you have loaded maps into the gps via a computer or a purchased SD card, they are always on the unit. The gps also utilizes satellites for your positioning vs a phones gps which might utilize the cell tower for positioning, thus utilizing data. Quote Link to comment
+Cacheoholic
A GPSr (GPS receiver) is receiving free radio signal just like your FM radio in your car. The signal has no encryption so it is free to anyone that wants it. Quote Link to comment
