+darniforgot Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Here is my first attempt at designing a geocoin. This will be the first in a series of flying-bird geocoins I plan to have made. This first one is called “Flying-Eagle” and is a 3-piece coin (1-body, 2-wings) which allows the wings to move up and down as if it was flying. The Flying-Eagle is a bald eagle which has a glow-in-the-dark head and tail and will be trackable through geocaching.com. I just got my first samples and wanted to post them here to get other people’s opinion on my design. I'm not sure how many I will have minted yet, but I plan to sell some of them through ebay later this year. I plan to begin the next flying-bird design shortly. Quote
+JackHoe Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I'm impressed by the design, but was wondering if it is possible to close the wings one way or another so the complete coin will be flat? Is this the only version you will make? No other colours? I don't know if it's the picture, but the colours don't look 'alive' to me, a bit 'flat' (sorry, but I don't know how I can explane this in an other way)I like the light on the wall from the reflection of the coin . Quote
+cacher87 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 i have a feeling that the wings could break off when moved from cache to cache and the cold could weaken them. just a minor concern Quote
+Crowesfeat30 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Very nice. Now if you had a Raven... CF30 Quote
GregsonVaux Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 i have a feeling that the wings could break off when moved from cache to cache and the cold could weaken them. just a minor concern That looks like a strong hinge to me. It is similar to a door hinge, which under normal usage takes lots of abuse. The metal will most likely be bronze and I cannot see it being weakened by the types of temperatures one would find outside in winter. Do outside door hinges to our houses fail in January? If you were to put it in liquid nitrogen, then you might have problems. To me, the biggest concern is whether the wings can be fully opened and fully closed. Besides the need to store it flat, if the hinge is not able to let the wings go into fully open and fully closed positions, the leverage from the long wings could put great stress on the hinge and snap it. +Sivota Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Oh.........., another beautiful bird. Like it very much, but I'm poor for the rest of the year already. Quote
+darniforgot Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 Yes, I did design the coin so it could lay flat. Here is a picture laying flat: Quote
+darniforgot Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) Here is a picture with better lighting that shows the colors better: I also had my son playing with one all day to see how it holds up to a lot of handling and stress. I knew people would be concerned whether the hinges would hold up, so I wanted to put it though some stress tests. Its still holding strong and shows no signs of hinge malfunction or wear. He absolutely loves it, so I probably will never get that one back. Edited March 4, 2011 by darniforgot Quote
+keewee Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 WOW! Fantastic design, beautiful coin! Congratulations. I'll definitely be getting one! Quote
+redwingrr Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 That's a fun coin. How big is it? Any idea of cost? Quote
+Where'sMyMarbles Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Wow! I thinks it's VERY neat!!! Awesome! Quote
+hunterKat Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 This is so cool! I love non-standard shapes and moving parts! Quote
+LewisClan77 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Wow, That is really cool. I love bald eagles. Quote
Delinum Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 dadgum! I want one! If it's not too expensive Quote
+Jackalgirl Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Very nice idea! May I suggest doing reservations? That way, you'll have an idea of how many you might need, which will in turn help you determine what a reasonable price will be (because more coins generally = lower per-coin cost, for a given value of "more coins"). Quote
+JackHoe Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I think I would like to buy two (if they're not to expencive). I also like non-standard shapes and moving parts. Quote
+Azure Sky Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I love the unique design! I'd definitely buy one or two. Quote
+Shadow's Friend Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Very nice coin. Depending on cost, I would like to get a couple. Look forward to seeing your other coins too! Quote
+fuzziebear3 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Very cool. My husband is represented by an eagle, I should get one of these for 'him' (even though he doesn't geocache). Quote
+Droo Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 There is the question of availability. You mention selling on Ebay. Do you intend on selling each and every one by auction? Or will you make some available here on the forums at a fixed price? My feeling is that the popularity this thread is showing will wane if access to the coin is by auction only. Quote
TheCacheSeeker Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Cool coin!! The 3d wings with hinges look fun!! Quote
+Ruud4d Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I's a month since the last post of the developer. Is it still going on? Quote
+surteb Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 This is your first coin!!?? Wow! Fantastic. I'm sure the hinge is fine, just like the Morpho butterfly coin hinges. I don't think anyone needs to worry about that. Congrats on your first coin! Quote
+darniforgot Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 I's a month since the last post of the developer. Is it still going on? Yes, this is still in the works. I am having the coin reworked so it is smaller in diameter. I felt the original coin was too large and asked to have them made smaller. I'm not certain of the ETA yet on the smaller coins. Quote
+purplepotter51 Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Neat geocoin idea! We will have to have one or two when they become available... We do the "Eagles in Flight" and "Eagle Watch" programs here in Indiana - Yes, there are eagles in Indiana now! They roost and nest here... Please keep us posted on developments... Quote
+southern_angel Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Would love to have at least one...maybe 2 depending on the price. Quote
+southern_angel Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 (edited) Double post. How did I manage to do that? Edited May 3, 2011 by southern_angel Quote
+Eartha Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Double post. How did I manage to do that? Did you hit the back button? Quote

You are actually having them remake the dies? That has to be costly. Quote
+darniforgot Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 Any new info on this great looking coin? I got word last week that the samples may be ready by the end of June. I will post a new picture when it arrives. The original sample was way larger than we had agreed upon so they needed time to rework it to the original specifications we had agreed on. If all looks well, they may be in production as soon as next month (July). Quote
+broncobob9 Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I definitely want a couple of these! That is a fantastic design. Quote
+Serchnsoul Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I love this coin and can't wait to have one in my hot little hands! Quote
+darniforgot Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 I got the final samples this week and they are the correct size now. I am adding a picture with the Flying-Eagle geocoin next to a quarter to show the size. They will go into production this month (July) but I'm not sure yet how long it will be until I receive them. I have not determined a price yet. That will depend on my final costs. Quote
+Azure Sky Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Very cool! Can't wait - thanks for the update! Quote
+darniforgot Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 Any more info on this coin? Good timing on your update request. I just got word about 10 minutes ago that they are finished and are getting shipped out this week. I should hopefully have them sometime early next week. I hope to have some on ebay for sale shortly after that. Quote

I hope to have some on ebay for sale shortly after that. serious? ...why ebay? ...are these going to be made available to purchase anywhere else? ...cool coin and I'd love to purchase one, but if buying from ebay is the only option, it will keep me from doing so... Quote
+keewee Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I looked back and in the first post it is talked about selling them on eBay, but he doesn't say that's the only way they'll be sold. We will have to hope that some are sold through the forums also... Quote
+darniforgot Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 The coins have finally arrived and I will start selling them on ebay this week. I currently have one listed, but will try to list more soon. I am using ebay auction right now, but may sell some at a later date at a fixed price. I have heard requests to sell some through the forums, so I may look into that at a later time as well and will update this forum if I decide to offer them here. Right now, I need to pay some huge medical bills for my son and auction is my best method to get us through right now. Hopefully I can change this at a later time to offer it to those who are not willing to use ebay or auction. Quote
+keewee Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 The other thing to consider is that doing it via eBay as you are it is going to take ages to get money back in. Through the forums, at a reasonable price, you'd get a lot of money back in quickly. Quote
+badger10 Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I definitely want at least one (probably two) of these great looking coins. I will wait and hopefully you will be able to sell it here in the near future. Quote
+SoloSeekers ヅ Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Hi...I just saw these and I want one! Are there any still available? How much are they? Great design! Quote
