Geocaching in San Diego

D AND A

Recommended Posts

We will be in San Diego in a few weeks after a cold winter in Iowa. Any suggestions for a good area to geocache? We like something more than the magnetic holder on a street sign, but not too terribly strenuous. It would be great if the drive got a to an area where there were enough caches to keep us busy for several hours.

Thanks for your help!

Sandy Creek Cowboy caches and La Fantasma de los Cruces.

Believe me, no little pile of rocks nor hanging Bison tubes and

no strenuous hiking ... more like a graduate course in Geocaching.

They are located off of I-8 about forty miles east of downtown

San Diego as the crow flies. Some dirt road but well maintained

for any vehicle and in the scenic ranch country of San Diego

County.

For the Sandy Creek Cowboy caches just do numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

7, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 16. For No. 3 you need a ladder so maybe

that's not for you; however, you'll be near it when at La Fantasma.

That leaves out three other cowboy caches ... No. 1 is nothing

fancy and is a definite uphill hike, No. 9 is pretty ordinary, and

No. 13 might not suit your rental vehicle. You'll find a lot to

learn about San Diego County history within the cache descriptions.

I'll just bet that you can round up a local group for the cowboy

caches if you post your intended schedule.

Of course I'm biased but do ask around about the cowboy caches.

And yes, ... real cowboys ... ranches, horses, roundups, and a whole

lot of tall tales t' tell.

Yeehaw!

Hello...please tell us what kind of caching you like to do and we'll point you in a good direction. The Sandy Creek Cowboy caches are indeed a blast. Tell us if you like puzzles, to hike, to bike, to drive, to walk. We have it all here. What area of San Diego will you be staying? Will you be mobile? We could keep you busy here for 2 months let alone 2 hours....

I'm sure the Sandy Creek Cowboys would love to have a few city slickers frequent their caches! We'll be heading out on Sunday the 13th. We'll probably meet at the Buckman Springs offramp around 9ish. I'll see if I can locate a ladder. Looks like we'll have a group of at least 5 vehicles. 4WD is not necessary, but we will be on a dirt road. They are incredibly fun caches with smiles and laughter at each one. Hope you all can join us!

Robyn,

You have been such a faithful follower of the

Sandy Creek Cowboy caches. Through you so many

others have had the fun and pleasure of those

crazy hides.

Good to mention that the dirt roads are suitable

for a Buick Roadmaster ... planed and sanded dirt

in good condition. Of course this torrential rain

we've been having might well rut the roads a bit

but what else might one expect of cowboy country?

Keep in mind ... no hints from previous finders

are allowed. Watching a new crop of finders make

the needed discoveries is icing on th' cowboy cake.

Might need a few replacement logsheets due to the

recent heavy rain, or at least a battery-operated

blow dryer. One thang f'r shore ... when wind,

rain, and snow come to Sandy Creek Ranch they do

come in good measure.

Y'all have fun y' hear,

Harmon

The Sandy Creek Cowboy caches are lots of fun, but if you do not want to take the 40-minute drive east, I offer the trails in Mission Trails Regional Park. You can download tracks from everytrail.com . Some parking lots are closed after hours but the trails are open 24/7.

Since I have the day off on Monday I think I am going to hit up a few trails around sweet water reservoir, less traffic there when making the grabs. Plus I have a Micro I want to place.

Hey, Harmon, a few of The Thirsty Ladies are going too!

After meeting up with you on the trail and chatting about

the series, we just had to get Robyn to organize this!

Maybe that will persuade you to come along?

OMG! not only Team Fatman but Robyn and The Thirsty Ladies

as well, my ship has finally come in. Still I'm confused ...

is there one or two groups? John mentioned the 12th and Robyn

mentioned the 13th. Sounds like I'll need a bedroll.

Lemme think this through ... either go with Team Fatman and

FATTBOY or go with Robyn and The Thirsty Ladies ... PHTT!

Take a guess ... this one is a no-brainer.

I can see it now, what with the late rainstorms the wildflowers

might be showing in time for the outing. Imagine me pickin'

posies for Robyn and The Thirsty Ladies.

Funny thing is that we haven't heard back from Iowa on this

deal. Maybe we scared them off or else they like Jodi better

than me.

Life is good,

Harmon

I'll make sure the first aid kit is ready to go since Ol' Harmon bleeds like a stuck pig...turkey.. :D:lol:

If you want natural scenery without leaving the city, Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is a wonderful 6-mile-long natural oasis surrounded by (but isolated from) residential and commercial neighborhoods, and is well-stocked with caches, including a few Earthcaches. You could easily spend a whole day taking in the beautiful scenery and finding caches. There are also a couple of historic adobe ranch houses, one of which played a small part in the US-Mexican War of the 1840s.

You can enter the canyon at several places; to go in from the east, park at the stated coords of "Welcome to PQ, Puzzle Canyon North", and take the trail south and then west. Another entrance, more in the middle of the canyon, is at "Park Village Cache". The western entrance is accessible from the parking lot just to the southeast of "WalkNCache: 1998".

There's a map at http://www.penasquitos.org/map.htm showing the preserve and the places where you can cross the stream that runs through it. The website also has info about which stream crossings are actually passable (sometimes they get washed out).

If you do go to "PQ", be sure not to miss the cache "Maddi's Funhouse." It's inside a natural tree-and-boulders "fort" that is sure to be a hit with the kids (even if the "kids" are grownups). And very near it is "The Toybox," a very old cache -- serial number GC20B -- over ten years old now!

If you need a guide for this area I think I could be persuaded :-) to leave my desk and take a hike!

Does this require an RSVP or can we just show if we can make it?

If anyone is planning to look for these caches tomorrow, please note that Team Reid and Team Fatman will not be coming. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif However Robyn of Team Reid kindly made a plan for the rest of us, so we are going ahead with the trip. We'll meet at GCJNEJ (Sandy Creek Cowboys #3) at 9am. This should be fun!http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/public/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

Here's a picture of the group that did a tour of the Sandy Creek Cowboy caches last Sunday. What a wonderful time we had - lots of laughs and giggles! I think the three new cachers that joined us were very impressed. Of course, we had to explain to them that not all caches are as exciting and well thought-out as the ones in this series!

We enjoyed our vacation and got some geocaching in. Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly the weather did not cooperate for when we had planned to some of the more scenic geocaches. I guess we will just have to plan another trip to San Diego. D and A

Hmm, doesn't it ever rain in northwest Iowa? Sorry we missed you.
