+ChocolateFairy+1
I am recently new to geocaching and I am currently using an iphone4 as GPS. Although this is fairly accurate on most occasions but whenever I am in heavy tree cover I lose the signal. I now want to purchase a GPS unit and looking at the Garmin 400, 400T and 450 as a choice but am not sure what to go for. We intend to use the GPS when we visit Europe and Worldwide and would appreciate any advice to the unit that would be most suitable. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance chocolatefairy Quote Link to comment
+Bear and Ragged
GPS's work worldwide. The downside is maps. The unit you buy will have a basemap for where you buy it. However there are 'free' maps available from various sources... (Garmin also sell maps, but if you are only visiting a country for a few weeks, are they worth the money?!!) Quote Link to comment

+dfx
The downside is maps. The unit you buy will have a basemap for where you buy it. To clarify on that: The mentioned models (Oregons) all have a worldwide basemap installed, but that's extremely low detail and pretty much useless. The "T" models additionally have a more detailed topo map of whatever region you bought it from preinstalled. All of them let you install more maps after you buy them. Quote Link to comment
atari26k
Maps can also be obtained on microSD cards, which can be transferable. However, once the card is pulled out, the maps won't be available. You might be able to find them used online. Edited February 14, 2011 by atari26k Quote Link to comment
+msrubble
If you travel often, it might make sense to avoid the "T" model and just load free topo maps as needed. Some people think that is the way to go even if you don't travel extensively. Quote Link to comment
