+LSUFan
If I have an image of a mark, but don't know which one it is, is it possible to search the database for the stamping on the mark to find out which one it is? Duke, if you know which state the mark is located in, you can do a search by station name/designation (which should be the stamping on it) from the link below: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_desig.prl I have found when searching this way, that it's best to put just key words/numbers in the search box. Trying to use the exact stampings sometimes won't get you the result you are looking for. Here is an excerpt from the NGS concerning searching by designation: NGS Station Names ----------------------------------------------------------------- The National Geodetic Survey stores the designation (name) of survey marks in their database in accordance with Annex D of the NGS "Bluebook", which is available at: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FGCS/BlueBook/ In brief, before loading a designation in the database the designation is edited to... 1. Remove year 2. Remove agency code 3. Remove some special characters 4. Insert blank between Alpha and Numeric characters. 5. Remove 'BM' from the front of the name. Can't find your station ??? --------------------------- If your topo map shows a mark called 'BM K155' Try entering K 155 for your search Edited January 30, 2011 by LSUFan Quote Link to comment

I think that you can - with caution. I download Data Sheets into county notepad text files, which has a Find feature in the Edit menu. However, during my current 'County Error' project I have discovered that Roosevelt Co, Mont has two L 80 1934 and two M 80 1934. Also, this edit missed the M-80 1934 entry. kayakbird Quote Link to comment
+LSUFan
Another easy way, is if you use GSAK and have made a gpx file of an entire states datasheets. You can load this gpx file into gsak and use the search feature of GSAK to find it by designation. I only thought I liked GSAK, until I started using it to filter stuff for benchmarks........like by oldest ones placed, etc. Now I use GSAK all the time. +LSUFan
It's a reference mark, right? Looks like a bench mark disk to me. Does somebody have it for sale? kayakbird I agree with Kayakbird. Judging from the designation, it appears to be from a level line somewhere. Quote Link to comment
Bill93
Since the series number 431 is so large, many states don't have one with this designation. There are only about 10 in the GC list with that designation and style being disk. Most of them have a different year. I can't tell if that's 1934 or 1984. The C&GS style of disk argues for 1934, since by 1984 this would have had to be a leftover series of disks being used up (see GN0386 listed as NGS logo in 1983) But very few states would have had that many series done so early as 1934. If 1984, which I doubt, a good candidate is JK0946 in Colorado, last logged as found in 2007. But the NGS data sheet lists the agency logo as NGS, not C&GS, which would have been expected at that date. So it seems the most likely explanation is that it was marked destroyed before the GC snapshot of the data base and is not among their entries. That leaves thirty-some states (not likely in the territories) to search by designation in the NGS data base if anyone is so inclined. Quote Link to comment

+Bullygoat29
EN0401 How did you search through the destroyed benchmarks? I had the link at one time but when my computer crashed this last time, I lost it. Quote Link to comment
+Rotareneg
EN0401 How did you search through the destroyed benchmarks? I had the link at one time but when my computer crashed this last time, I lost it. On the station name search page I selected Browse mode. It came up with a "blank" sheet indicating a destroyed mark. I then went back set the data type desired field to Destroyed Only. Quote Link to comment

Uhhh Duke, you may want to do a little searching in the benchmark forums about "buying" NGS survey disks. You can enter the search term of "ebay" in the search box, and restrict your search to the benchmark forums, to read about it. Quote Link to comment
+DukeOfURL01
The datasheet says it was officially marked destroyed in... 1968. But you're probably right. Better to pay 50 bucks for a replica and be safe. Quote Link to comment
Wintertime
Here's the link to the page that I used. The nice thing about GC.com's database is that you can search all states at once. The bad news, of course, is that the GC database is way out of date now. And it wouldn't have found this particular mark because the mark was declared destroyed (and thus removed from the active NGS database) long before GC got their snapshot of the NGS database. But for the most part, it's a handy feature. Quote Link to comment

NGS Surveyor
I have sent a note to the eBay seller of this disk and asked them to remove the disk from sale. I explained that we do not want to develop a market for survey disks for fear that people will go out and pry them from the ground and then sell them on eBay. I do this for every survey disk I see on eBay. GeorgeL NGS Quote Link to comment

68-eldo
My bet is on California. I only searched US states not other places such as Guam etc. Only two came up with a stamping of 1955, DC0525 and GL0686. Nether one has been recovered recently.
