+dfx Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 On the other hand, all sorts of other non-geocaches count as geocache finds. I fully understand the confusion stemming from this inconsistency. Quote
+LSUFan Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I think you meant to say 'How come my benchmark finds don't count as geocaches?' I believe TillaMurphs is just being witty. Quote

Kidding! The subject caught my attention too. Personally, I would love it if it DID. I'd go from like.. 7 to some darn high number. Quote
+Harry Dolphin Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Humor is lost on so many... Geocaching keeps track of the numner of benchmark logs, not finds. HMm... I could be a numbers ho with 2978 caches found and 825 benchmarks logged! Quote

foxtrot_xray Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Humor often gets filtered out in the conversion from the original intention to the text-based world of the internet. Blame AT&T. Everything else is their fault too. HAH! I *KNEW* it! All I needed was PROOF, and YOU supplied it! ... nevermind. Quote

The benchmark in the parking lot counts the same as the one a mile in on the mountaintop! Quote
AZcachemeister Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Ya know, it's funny... I don't mind stopping the truck and climbing out to find a benchmark every .25 mile or so, but doing the same for Geocaches gets tiring rather quickly. Quote
+LSUFan Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) So far, I've yet to find a benchmark under a lamp post skirt........but ya'll will be the first (ok, second) to know if I do. Oh yeah, benchmarks can be on active bridges, schools, airports, on or near train stations/tracks where geocaches can't. It's also fairly rare to see a geocache with a sign telling you that it's nearby. Edited January 27, 2011 by LSUFan Quote
Bill93 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) >"It's also fairly rare to see a geocache with a sign telling you that it's nearby." There's always an exception. There is a cache in this town named "The Sign Says It All." When you get in the area you notice a hair salon has a huge sign with its name: Cache' (with the French accented e) The cache is of course at the base of the sign. AZcachemeister Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 So far, I've yet to find a benchmark under a lamp post skirt... I'll get back to this one later...with pictures. Oh yeah, benchmarks can be on active bridges, schools, airports, on or near train stations/tracks where geocaches can't. And, you can sometimes find three (or even more!) benchmarks within 50 feet of each other. If it's buried, no need to get upset about a breach of the guidelines...just dig it up! Mainly, I think it's because if the marks were placed so close together, it was for a very good (engineering related) reason, and not just so a bunch of people can boost their find count. It's also fairly rare to see a geocache with a sign telling you that it's nearby. I wonder how much I would have to pay for an embossed metal sign reading: WITNESS POST Please do not disturb nearby GEOCACHE for more information write to Jeremy Irish Groundspeak Department of Geocaches Seattle, WA Quote

+secondgunman Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 And, you can sometimes find three (or even more!) benchmarks within 50 feet of each other. Here's three for ya, just to prove the point. http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM9DRR_FC_BDY_501 http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM9DV3_FC_BDY_502 http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM9DRJ_97_FC_15 There's actually a witness post for another one just north of FC BDY 502, on the other side of the road, but the marker is no longer there. The road those are on is just littered with markers. I've found eleven so far, with an additional three witness posts missing their markers, on a stretch of road less than a mile long. I think they were trying to keep the survey crew busy...... Quote

OK, sounds like time for a contest. Those would make some Gooood Prizes. If you are willing to be the one to run the contest and be the judge (you might get Klemmer to help on that end), we will donate $90.oo for the "10 sign" package. How does that grab you AZcachemeister? Shirley~ Hmmmmm, I wonder what Jeremy would say if he gets a few letters? OOoooh, By the way, don't tell John or Klemmer that I thought of this......... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote
