Disabling caches

I have a question for the community. A local cacher has had her caches disabled by a Reviewer. The reason explained is that they all have a sexual intent in the names. Well,,,, they do. But only when the entire group of caches are viewed. Here are some names and the reason for the name.

'Try my Pie' -a foam pie container outside of a Marie Calendars.

'Ride Me' - a very clever magnet on a highway horse crossing sign

'I'd Tap That' in a very well, openly hidden, Tap Light

'Snatch It'- a flat hide-a-key hidden on a strange piece of public art, made up of flat, metal plates. A figure that is already in a strange position, and the hide, yes, is on the flat pelvic plate.

'Big Jugs'- a hide a key on two humongous fiberglass Jugs outside of a business that builds such things.

I guess the worst name is 'Get Layed!' in an egg container hide, outside of a chicken ranch.

Almost every hide this hider has hidden are among the best hides I have found. And yes, the humerous double entendre is part of the fun.

Sexual, yes. But not nasty, and certainly not obscene.

I accept that the 'Powers that Be' have the right to make Final determinations about what is or is not family appropriate. But the leap of logic to make a sexual connection in this series is very adult.

One final thought. I have looked/found several caches that had me looking in very strange areas of well endowed animals as public art? The giggle factor is, 'why would a person be looking closely under there'? Are these to be banned also, as not family friendly?

We are sexual creatures. Our children know this. To truly deny this is silly

ps I hope that I have expressed this topic in a way that the moderators will allow. If its in the wrong forum, I apologize

Ultimately, nothing we say matters much. If you wish to appeal the reviewer's decision, then send email with all the relevant information to appeals@Groundspeak.com

Judging from the following in the OP:

A local cacher has had her caches disabled by a Reviewer.

It doesn't sound as if the OP is the cache owner, and their Profile Stats seem to support this assumption (unless they're using a different account to submit the Listings).

Since you've only given us the Titles to these Listings, it seems like a very simple matter to alter the Titles. If there's more to the story, it sure isn't apparent.

But as niraD implied, this is really a matter between the Cache Owner and the Reviewer, and/or Groundspeak as to what level in innuendo is allowable on the site.

Hopefully they'll get something worked out to the mutual benefit of all :)

TBH, I think they are a bit too much. Like you said they are worse when seen with the others :o

It is a family friendly activity. My kids always ask what's the name of the cache; first we'll go for 'Try My Pie' followed by 'Big Jugs'

I can just imagine that being repeated at school

Like most things a bit of common sense always helps out:)

I think each cache taken individually could be an acceptable double-entendre. But it appears to me that this CO is developing a pattern intended to provoke. I think that puts it over the top. But as NiraD said, nothing said here really matters. It's between the CO, his reviewer and appeals if the CO wants to take it there.

...perhaps the reviewer is on the extreme side of being prude

Your assertion does not seem to support the facts. Since the Listings were Published, it would appear that they survived the initial pass by the Reviewer in the Review process.

My guess is that someone, or someone's complained to the Reviewer and/or Groundspeak, and as a general policy, they are obligated to respond in some fashion.

We had something similar in my area, in which a Listing was Published with a rascist slang term of relatively recent origin, was in the Title. Several folks complained to the Publishing Reviewer, and cited the Urban Dictionary as a source. The Listing was Archived relatively quickly as failing the "family friendly" intent outlined in the Guidelines.

seriously?...do your kids walk around with earplugs?

if i make a pie and ask the neighbors kids to come have some, you mean to tell me that if i say "come eat some of my pie" they will think i mean something else and its inappropriate?

what about big jugs of water?...why do the kids need to know that "jugs" refers to anything else other than the intended meaning?

Taken all together, I think it is a little much. As others have said, any one of those could stand alone and not be remarkable, but as a group it's a different story. The reviewer isn't a prude for disabling them - the reviewer is looking out for all cachers, and recognizes that some people will be upset and uncomfortable with this. This sort of thing can be very alienating to new cachers in particular.

No, I am not the hider. I have only met her twice. I just happened to be in the area of one I hadn't found yet, and noticed when I went to log it that it was disabled. further search revealed that many of them had been disabled.

I like her caches, the finds are clever, and make me amused. They are often very open, yet sneaky hides.

The actual cache numbers are unimportant. No need to draw attention to them. I am assuming they will be removed/altered. I have given a big enough sample to see the trend. Others continue in that same sort of theme.

At first my thought was:

There's no reason for "outlawing" these caches due to their names. Sure, there's a double entendre in each name, and if taken together a pattern can be seen, but in order to see them together someone has to look specifically for them. If one searches by zip code, state or coordinates, these caches won't be grouped together. One has to look at this cacher's hides and ignore the caches with normal names. For me, this means that that person went to extensive lengths in order to be offended, and have no sympathy for him.

But after looking at all the caches hidden by said cacher:

Most of her caches have double-entendre names, and many of them are more offensive than the one listed in the OP's post. I think at least a couple of her caches can be denied individually due to their name, no need to look at the large picture. Now I fully support the reviewer's decision of disabling the caches until the names are made family friendly.

Once upon a time, we lived in a polite society. Yes. We all knew that sex exists, but we did not feel the need to rub it in everyone's faces. We were polite! We tittered, and told jokes privately, to be sure. Unfortunately that society seems to have died. Now, everything has devolved to the least common denominator. Very sad. There is a time and place for everything, and this is not it.

I applaud the reviewer. There is no need for this. She should use a non-offensive name, or have her caches archived.

That being said, one can get away with it once or twice (which, obviously this CO is not doing.) See earlier thread concerning 'morning wood'.

I objected to one called "Slow Poke". In the parking lt of a porn store. "Adults will understand the name of the cache when they are at the site." CO like that quickly makes my Ignore List.

Double entendres are still dirty jokes, and have no place in a family friendly site.

The thing about the controversy that strikes me odd is that these cache names don't seem very "adult" to me at all. Rather, they seem extremely juvenile. It's like a pre-adolescent boy who snickers when you ask him whether he wants a pastrami, ham, or turkey breast sandwich.

But as I said before, our opinions really don't matter. Only the opinions of the reviewers and (ultimately) of Groundspeak matter.

You've been alive since Shakespeare's Chaucer's time, I take it? This golden era where nobody talked about sex had to be before that.

Your comments are irrelevant to the grand scheme of the topic. He never defined the time frame, and frankly who cares about the exact point in time when his referenced societal change took place. The change is indeed a fact and when it happened doesn't matter. His point remains, and is on topic.

I thought this was extremely well stated.

First, let me say that I suspect I'd enjoy the CO's caches very much. It sounds like she has a sense of humor and wishes to put out unique caches that are entertaining. I highly value CO's of that type and I would seek out her caches if I lived in her area. Having said that...

I agree with the reviewer. In totality it is all a bit much for a 'family-oriented' game/sport/hobby/obsession.

Sex and double entendres have been around since the dawn of time, but so has the concept of 'age appropriate'. Adult activities and adult humor have generally been kept to adults. However, this is a game/hobby/sport/obsession that many parents use as an activity to do with their children.

This site is a relatively good place for families to find caches they can do together. If someone wants to do an adult-themed cache there are other listing sites that will gladly list those caches.

i find it extremely hilarious that those complaining are the ones with the dirty minds and taking the titles out of context and assuming the CO thought the same

I see the names are being changed to coded names... e.g what was "In Your Pants" is now "Id Yeos Ptdnm".

Some of the original ones which were disabled I don't "get" at all... i.e. I truly don't understand what is offensive, e.g. "Reach-Around"?

I don't really get "Aunt Flow" either...

Others are more obvious.

I find it interesting to hear you say how sad it is that we don't live in a polite society when I see what you've chosen to use as your forum signature.

Some people are like slinkies. Not much good for anything but bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs!

Back on topic... I think I'd probably enjoy the CO's caches too though it's understandable someone would eventually complain about them. I hope the CO is able to find other ways to make things fun without offending people.

http://coord.info/GC2FYCW "Dirty Big Balls". I've been dying to tackle this cache.

I have to admit, I made a detour the other day to grab "Luke's FrogBalls". The description is innocent enough, though...

Cammo'd mixed nuts container. Lots of room for trading items. Specifically frogs or balls. (2 of Luke's favorite toys) Make sure you get it to stay when you are done.

When thinking of what to place in this cache, we thought, obviously.....frogs and balls. Trading items of which we always have or always come across, and our son, Luke, always LOVES! Enjoy the cache

Wow! Lots of people proably enjoyed these caches but once again we bow to the few who have issues with it. Just like so much else in America today. We change EVRYTHING so no one complains.

Did any of you read that the containers matched the title? 'Try my Pie' -a foam pie container. 'Big Jugs'- a hide a key on two humongous fiberglass Jugs outside of a business that builds such things.

Yes I can see the point you are all making but if I took my kids, 2 & 6, to these caches and I told them the name was "Ride Me" and we found it on a horseback riding sign they would think it's funny/cool not perverted.

But hey if you've got the time to get offended over eveything go for it. I've got enough going on in my own life to worry about how someone else is offending me. And so what if they do? Ignore it.

Anyone who was offended by those cache names needs to pay a little more attention to the average Disney Movie your kids are watching, they are full of double-entendre and sexual innuendos hidden there to keep the parents entertained while the kids are oblivious.

Anytime I hear complaints like this my first though is "there is a parent who pays no attention to there kids", yes they are trying to be protective and pay attention to what their kids do, but obviously they have never spent the time to actually sit down with their kids and watch a movie together or they would be tearing down the front door to Disney Headquarters. They just plop them in front of the TV and put in a movie they figure is safe per their standards.

Dude. I support the caches being disabled.

The farcical ramblings about a better time are just a little much. The Eisenhower Era wasn't a golden age, and some cache owner being a little risque with cache names doesn't signify the end of polite society.

Exactly which Disney movies use the term "reach around" in such a context?

You kind of made my point, it's all about context. If the cache name is "Reach Around" and you have to reach around an object to get it then there is no sexual context.

Same with the other listed examples, Big Jugs on a big jug, try my pie in a fake pie.

P.S. Picking one specific innuendo and showwing it is not in a movie, then using that fact in declaring there are no innuendos in the movie is kinda like getting to the GZ, looking under one rock, then declaring the cache missing.

I find the cache names listed, both relevant and amusing.

I have a cache magnetised to a nut on Juggs Lane.

Will it also become involuntary disabled by a blinkered reviewer?

Well, it hasn't been in 2.5 years so I'm guessing it won't be. Looking at the description, I don't know why anyone would disable it.

I have a B.F. Egypt. I dont' make a habit of giving them racey names and I would gladly change it if approached by a Geocache mediator. I believe that would be fine if all geocachers were college aged and above, but the elder member would be a little offended with all the sexual innuendos and people taking their children caching would not appreciate the humor.

Link to comment

I must admit, that the name 'Reach Around' made me laugh out loud. But anyhoo, I agree that it's at the reviewer's discretion. However, are they really violating any guidelines? I personally would choose not to give my caches these types of names because I really like to make kid friendly caches, but I suppose that's a matter of personal choice.
