Why can't we search for the top favorite United States caches?

You can search (or at least do a PQ for) a radius of 500 miles. You aren't likely to drive more than that in a single day (at least not in a straight line). If you do, just do a second PQ (or use caches along a route).

If you're flying to your destination, do a PQ or search there. You still aren't likely to drive more than 500 miles after flying somewhere. If you do, see above.

There's really no need to search an entire continent when planning what caches you want to do today.

It would be nice to see what caches in the entire country have the most Favorites votes. I would be inclined to check out the cache pages and likely add them to my Wish List.

I would like to have it to keep track of where one of my caches compares to all other caches without going to all 50 states one at a time. I have one with 114 favorites now. Last time I checked it only had 9 ahead of it. Took me about half an hour to go through all the states.

Yes, I saw the other thread you started about Jolly Green Giant.

There is a bookmark list here that attempts to bring the states together.

looks like a europe-wide (?) search works though: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?state_id=1&sortdir=desc&sort=fav

Well, that link isn't quite Europe-wide since I noticed that Europe's First geocache (which is in Ireland) and has, as of this moment, been favorited 66 time - and should be 7th or 8th on that list - doesn't show up.

No, it's not Europe-wide. There are two Netherlands caches that have more favorite points than "Bedevaartcache 1 - Anton der Schijn" that don't show up on the list, because they are listed as being in specific Dutch states and not simply in "Netherlands." And no German caches show up, even though there are over 20 German caches with more than 114 favorite points.

Plus, if you go to the last page, it shows a virtual cache from Kenya. So, this list appears to cover caches that have a country listed but not a specific state.

For the same reason you can't search for all caches in the United States. Too many to retrieve.

However, you CAN change the radius to to 200 miles by adding &dist=200 to a coordinate search.

So, this is the third thread where you bragged about your cache.

You can't search on the entire USA because you would basically be polling about 3/4, (just a guess), of the database. This would create a tremendous load on the servers.

Acutally here is a better stat. I have a cache in Las Vegas that has I think 32 favorites. 2nd highest in Las Vegas. But percentage wise it has a 36% rate. That is the true favorite.

I would be loath to make it too easy to search for high-favorite caches. A logrolling effect could result. Or rather an increased logrolling effect. I expect already that highly rated caches will get more attention, more finds, more favorites, thus more attention, etc. I'm not saying favorites are a bad thing (I've used most of my votes). Just saying that it may not be a good idea to magnify the effect. Make sure people go out and find new favorites.

For those who like to hear bragging, I have a cache with 25 finds and 11 favorites. But I don't need it showing up on searches. The people who would be interested in it have already heard of it.

I checked it out, and I think you're right (that people who would be interested have already heard of it). I suspect that's unusual though; your cache is definitely towards one end of the extreme on the "locals - visitors" continuum.

There is a workaround for PM's. Set up a PQ and select all fifty states (ctr-click each one). Preview the PQ and click the favorite column and you'll see the top 1000 (or how ever many you select for the PQ) favorites.

Well prom my poush, that actually works! I didn't expect it to... I thought the PQ would return 1000 of the oldest caches, and then sorting would just sort those caches. But when I tried it (with only a few states selected, I'm too lazy to do all 50) it did what you said, and not what I expected.

The default sort order is by age, and the oldest cache was listed as having been placed in 1963. (Note to self: I didn't realize you could do that. This could be useful for creating a certain kind of puzzle.) That cache had 4 favorites.

When I sorted by favorites, and went to the end of the list, the lowest number of favorites was 10. The 1963 cache had vanished, and some cache with more favorites had taken its place in the 1000.

Thanks for the tip!

That's what I thought also (bolded part) and had a discussion (in the Release Notesthread) with Moun10Bike about it. The only "good" thing I can see for this behavior is that you can get a highest fav list of whatever region you want. But it still changes the "preview" to a different list.
